This wonderful icon theme was abandoned in 2005 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=32599).
I've updated the folder and icon names so it runs under up-to-date versions of Gnome (2.28 and 2.30), and also older versions like 2.22 as shipped with Debian Lenny.
* Now updated to run on Gnome 3.x *
Obviously remove any previous version before installing.
To change the start icon add/rename ~/.icons/SnowIsh/scalable/places/start-here-xxxxx.png to ~/.icons/SnowIsh/scalable/places/start-here.png
If Saki wants to reclaim then I will remove.

I really appreciate that you took care of the beautiful SnowIsh set.
I asked myself if it was possible to use SnowIsh but with the mono-icons for the top bar. (I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 and find the mono icons very good)
Its easier than I thought:
I copied /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-light/ to
/usr/share/icons/SnowIsh_mono/ then edited /usr/share/icons/SnowIsh_mono/index.theme with gedit and changed the the parameter Inherits to
Inherits=SnowIsh
Then changed with uuntu tweak the icon theme and tada, it works. (Of course I installed SnowIsh before)
There are some icons that wont work e.g. the 'file system' in nautilus in the left menu gives me a white sheet of paper. Maybe its because of
Gtk-WARNING **: Theme directory scalable/misc of theme SnowIsh has no size field
Keep up the good work.

/usr/share/icons/SnowIsh_mono/index.theme
In addition I wanted to keep the original Firefox and Thunderbird icons. This can be done by cd to /usr/share/icons/SnowIsh/ and then run
for i in $(sudo find -iname "*firefox*"); do sudo mv $i $i"_bak"; done
and
for i in $(sudo find -iname "*thunderbird*"); do sudo mv $i $i"_bak"; done
This will add "_bak" to all filenames with firefox or thunderbird in it. So they cannot be found and the standard icons are used.
Greetings

sudo chmod -R a+r /usr/share/icons/
This enables reading (opening and viewing) all icons for everybody. It worked then.
