Hello alexibaba. I used the Ubuntu .deb to install in my antiX system which is Debian sid based. It installed fine since the dependencies have the same name in both Debian and Ubuntu.
But when trying to run it it gave this error:
Quote:antix@antiX1:~$ MagIcons
/usr/share/magicons/MagIcons:711: Warning: 'with' will become a reserved keyword in Python 2.6
File "/usr/share/magicons/MagIcons", line 711
with open(filepath, 'wb') as configfile:
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
This offending with in the code is present in line 1223 as well.

The version I installed was 120508-MagIcons_0.2-0_all.deb

Maybe you should fix the script or is it a problem in my side?

Regards.

Hi ikisham,

The 'with' statement is part of python 2.6. So I think you have a old version of python.

I recommend to update python to >= 2.6

If you don't want to update python, you could try the following (not tested):
Open the MagIcons program-file as root (sudo gedit /usr/share/magicons/MagIcons).
Write in line 23 without indentation:
Quote:from __future__ import with_statement
Save the file and try running MagIcons again

good luck
Alex

Yes, that line worked!
That's very nice really. I'm not bothering much on understanding how these things work (like the iconsets have a basic color but they are kind of changed 'on-the-fly') but it's working fine and is very useful to customize the desktop looks.
I used already Humanity colors in another installation I have along with this one.
The original Humanity colors is 'invalid' for MagIcons but Humanities-G works. Tok-tok works too but Lila-Ubuntu is getting an invalid status too.
Thank you.

Hi! For Lila-Ubuntu, decompress the Lila-Ubuntu.tar.bz2 package, and install in Magicons the LilaU.tar.bz2 file you will find inside. (I guess I have to simplify this procedure soon.)

Thank you! I used Lila a lot in the past, I really liked it (and still like). There were one or two icons that were missing so it's good to know you made your version for it.
Actually I just set the 'ghost' version for my root account and it seems you completed the missing ones.

Greetings,

I realized something strange happen. It happen when I use your app to change the color (I'm using Humanity-Colors package), changed it into orange scheme. At first I know that MagIcons create a new iconset called MagIcon on the ~/.icon folder. But then all my Humanity Icon (the default one from Ubuntu) changed into orange scheme (all by means of Humanity, Humanity-Dark, Ubuntu-mono, Ubuntu-mono-dark). I tried to remove all the icons from ~/.icons and reinstall the Humanity and Ubuntu-mono icons but no use, they all coming back to orange scheme. Is this because of the application? Is there any configuration file that could I delete to revert the changes?

I attach the samples on:

Hi Alvonsius,
There has nothing strange happened and this is not a bug!
MagIcons modifies only the iconset called "MagIcons" (as you confirmed).

I will try to explain:
On a fresh Ubuntu installation (10.04) or on a live-session, the five iconsets (Humanity, Humanity-Dark, LoginIcons, Ubuntu-Mono-Dark and Ubuntu-Mono-Light) will all look the same (at least at the selector preview, your screenshot).
The Humanity-Colors package with the scheme "Orange" also looks identically to the original Ubuntu 10.04 Icons.
In this case the orange folder icons in the selector menu are not the result of a strange behaviour of MagIcons.

I hope this was understandable. If not, try out with a live-session of Ubuntu Lucid and take a look at the icon selector before installing MagIcons. This will look the same as in your screenshot.

Best regards
Alex

Hi,
seems like an interesting app to have, but where is the source tarball? Ubuntu is of course an important distro, but it's not the only one in the universe, many people choose other alternatives... so as a Gentoo user I'd be happy to download the source tarball. I might provide an ebuild then.
Thx,
Mona

I love a nice looking OS, but Im not an graphical artist. So I give you this Application in the hope it is alo useful for you!
The Iconsets that are included in this application are not complete sets (they only consists of a view icons).

It is very easy to create an iconset that fits in MagIcons. If you want to create one or if you want to build one from an existing iconset, please contact me to get help. For the future I will create a small wiki for you as icondesigner.

Please help that some installable iconsets are soon available.
