I Think it may be too late, but you should see on this page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/ ( theme's devellopement for karmic) and urpose your paper! It is pretty perfect!

Well, actually you can do it yourself...check out google, or even youtube...they have videos and tutorials on making simple wallpapers in gimp. From there, just experiment with gimp see what comes out!!
