GTK2 Themes

Description:

Victory is a bright, flat, and minimalist theme. This theme was made using, and primarily for use on, Xubuntu and Lubuntu 16.04 thru 18.04, but should work fine with any XFCE/LXDE-based distro. Gtk3 elements should work on Gtk 3.18 (Ubuntu 16.04) and above. Even though a Gtk3 theme is provided, I have not tested it on Gnome3, so please report issues. As of the 18.07 release, Gtk3 theming has become the primary focus, and as of this release, all Gtk3 elements should be themed correctly. I've also included variant borders and styles for Openbox and XFWM, as well as a notification theme for XFCE. Again, please let me know if anyone has any problems, thoughts, constructive criticisms, etc.

Thanks again everyone... I really appreciate all the feedback, votes, and comments!

I have also recently set up Patreon and Liberapay pages for those interested in supporting my work, and any contributions are greatly appreciated:

++ Installing ++

To install, downloaded the tar.gz, open it and extract the folder of your preferred theme into your ~/.themes folder (if your home directoy does not have a .themes folder, create one). Then open your desktops Appearance Manager to select the theme.

+ Appearance Managers

- XFCE: xfce4-appearance-settings (for Theme/Controls)
- XFCE: xfwm4-settings (for Window Border)

- LXDE: lxappearance (for Theme/Controls)
- LXDE/Openbox: obconf (for Window Border)

+ Theme Directory is located at /home/USERNAME/.themes

----------------------------------------------------------

++ Configure ++

You can modify the colors and change some styles in the /home/USERNAME/.themes/victory-gtk-theme/gtk-3.20/gtk.css file. Open that file and you can change the colors. At the bottom you can uncomment lines for various custom styles that will affect certain applications or parts of the theme (more styles to be added later). The picture for this theme is using Thunar, for example, with the thunar custom view line uncommented. This removes the back/forward/home buttons from thunar and makes the location bar take up all the space.

++ Credits ++

In the first preview image I am using the Victory Icon Theme and the wallpaper Flow by tri5tian here on this site. Icons used in the second image (temporarily removed until I have time to re-add the color variants after the 18.07 release) include Boston icons, Arc icons, Papirus icons, Breeze icons.

I'll take a look at that for the next time. It's probably an error on my part. If there is anything you notice you're doing when it happens, let me know.

Anyway, thanks for that!

Theres a small problem on the theme. When you open synaptic or the software sources the them shows really ugly, like windows 95.
Excluding that its awsome!

Hey, thanks! Glad you like it.

Luckily that can be fixed pretty easily. It's because the theme doesn't install as root. You can do it in nautilus by running gksu nautilus and making a link to your /home/yourname/.themes folder, and putting it in the /root folder. Or just do it in the terminal:

1.) Open terminal and type:
2.) sudo mv /root/.themes /root/.themesold
3.) Hit enter, then type:
4.) sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root
5.) Hit enter

Step 2 may give an error if the /root directory doesn't have a .themes folder. Just ignore it and move on to Step 4.

-----------

Anyway, let me know if that works.

man, i found out that checkboxes look different in different progs using your theme. here is the screenshot http://itmages.ru/image/view/67415/39560f32
is it a bug or a feature? I'd like them be of background colour..

Report

I like them the background color too... unfortunately it's a bug/feature/limitation of the Murrine Engine. If I'm mistaken, someone can let me know... but I couldn't find a way to change many treeview elements.

So you'll notice in treeviews where there are progressbars, checkboxes, radio buttons, and many times expander triangles... they look different than the rest of the theme.

I think Murrine colors all checkboxes by default... I'm not a big fan of that. So the ones that are the background color are the ones I've changed. And Compiz Settings Manager gave me a lot of problems, along with gnome-control-center and application browser... they don't apply themes correctly. So you may even notice that the checkboxes in those are different than the checkboxes anywhere else (like in the run dialogue).

Anyway, sorry about that. Maybe I'm just not sure how to do it, so if someone knows let me know - but I don't think it's currently possible. You could bring it up on the Murrine Site as a feature request if you want.

thanks for you help.

Hey, glad you like it! Thanks!

In screenshot 3, I'm using Nautilus Elementary, and turned off the menubar. You can find that here:
https://launchpad.net/~am-monkeyd/+archive/nautilus-elementary-ppa

But to change the menubar color, all you should have to do in the Gnome Appearance Properties (run gnome-appearance-properties OR go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Theme) is go to Customize, then the Colors tab. Changing the Tooltip colors should also change the menubar colors.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any problems or need anything else!

thanks for the quick response. As you wrote changing the tooltip colors also changed the textcolor, but not the window border. it's still black for me. where do i change that?

Report

Cool, glad you got it working.

For the window border, you'll just have to click the Window Border tab (same window as where you changed the colors), and pick a different window border.

I wanted to make my window border also change according to the Menubar/Tooltip color, but unfortunately you can't do that with window borders. It either has to be fixed one color, or mirror the Selected/Background colors. In screenshot 3, that border was just one I was playing around with a couple years ago. I never uploaded it or anything... it doesn't show buttons normally. I'm not sure if anyone would like that much.

The elementary theme border works well:
http://danrabbit.deviantart.com/art/elementary-gtk-theme-83104033

In screenshot 2, I'm using Simple eGtk:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Simple+eGTK?content=119812

But there are all kinds of great borders either packaged with themes, or under the Metacity section here on Gnome Look.

Hey, sorry I took so long to get back.

1. The Wallpaper is part of the Gnome 2.28 desktop (gnome-backgrounds). It's called flow.
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Environment/Tools/gnome-backgrounds-12721.shtml

2. To change the panel text color, you'll need to user gnome-color-chooser... or you can edit the gtkrc by finding the Panel entry and changing the FG colors... but you may have to do that in a couple different parts of the gtkrc. I'd recommend gnome-color-chooser.

3. Thanks for offering to try out different versions, but I tried to play around with it, and it didn't turn out right, so don't worry about it! Thanks though.

You can do this in the gtkrc by changing the fg colors under style "panel".

Another (I think easier) solution is to use gnome-color-chooser. It lets you change all kinds of colors... it's good if you're going for a dark panel. It let's you revert all changes very easily as well. It's a pretty cool program.

IMO the toolbar prelight glow is too bright. Is there a way to endarken it? though the theme is the best one ever. Earlier i used to switch from theme to theme, now i switch from victory version to victory version. Thanx 4 what u do.

Hey, thanks for the compliment! I really appreciate that.

I'll turn it back down as default if I hear more people chime in, but for now I may keep it about that bright.

You can turn it down in the gtkrc file (/home/yourname/.themes/Victory/gtk-2.0/gtkrc) by finding this line:

style "toolbarbutton-prelight"

And under that, changing

bg[PRELIGHT] = shade (1.06, @bg_color)

to any lower number (1.03, etc)

------------------------------------

As for your other comment, you put progressbar... were you talking about the glow behind the toolbar buttons? I wasn't sure - the progress bar is square... the light behind the toolbar buttons I think is the only thing that isn't.

If so, you're right... there is kind of a disconnect with circular glow when the rest of the theme is more square. It's not really achieving the effect I wasnted in the first place either, so I'll think about reworking that. I might message you later if you want to help try it out and see what you think.

------------

Anyway, thanks for the ideas and kind words. Let me know if you have any others or have any problems or anything.

Thanks again.

shade (1.04, I find the variant, at least for me. As for the rounded progressbars, it seems that they are rounded in not every applications, but for example in transmission it looks like that http://itmages.ru/image/view/50043/35efaaa4
