Description:

Victory is a bright, flat, and minimalist theme. This theme was made using, and primarily for use on, Xubuntu and Lubuntu 16.04 thru 18.04, but should work fine with any XFCE/LXDE-based distro. Gtk3 elements should work on Gtk 3.18 (Ubuntu 16.04) and above. Even though a Gtk3 theme is provided, I have not tested it on Gnome3, so please report issues. As of the 18.07 release, Gtk3 theming has become the primary focus, and as of this release, all Gtk3 elements should be themed correctly. I've also included variant borders and styles for Openbox and XFWM, as well as a notification theme for XFCE. Again, please let me know if anyone has any problems, thoughts, constructive criticisms, etc.

Thanks again everyone... I really appreciate all the feedback, votes, and comments!

I have also recently set up Patreon and Liberapay pages for those interested in supporting my work, and any contributions are greatly appreciated:

Thanks!

++ Installing ++

To install, downloaded the tar.gz, open it and extract the folder of your preferred theme into your ~/.themes folder (if your home directoy does not have a .themes folder, create one). Then open your desktops Appearance Manager to select the theme.

+ Appearance Managers

- XFCE: xfce4-appearance-settings (for Theme/Controls)
- XFCE: xfwm4-settings (for Window Border)

- LXDE: lxappearance (for Theme/Controls)
- LXDE/Openbox: obconf (for Window Border)

+ Theme Directory is located at /home/USERNAME/.themes

----------------------------------------------------------

++ Configure ++

You can modify the colors and change some styles in the /home/USERNAME/.themes/victory-gtk-theme/gtk-3.20/gtk.css file. Open that file and you can change the colors. At the bottom you can uncomment lines for various custom styles that will affect certain applications or parts of the theme (more styles to be added later). The picture for this theme is using Thunar, for example, with the thunar custom view line uncommented. This removes the back/forward/home buttons from thunar and makes the location bar take up all the space.

----------------------------------------------------------

++ Credits ++

In the first preview image I am using the Victory Icon Theme and the wallpaper Flow by tri5tian here on this site. Icons used in the second image (temporarily removed until I have time to re-add the color variants after the 18.07 release) include Boston icons, Arc icons, Papirus icons, Breeze icons.

Thank you very much for this beautiful theme. One question. My min/max/close buttons appear as arrow up/arrow down/ red 'x'. None of your screenshots show those buttons that way (+ - etc). I downloaded the elementary icons (not sure if that matters or not). Everything else seems to be working fine. Nautilus-elementary looks as it should.

Did you change the min/max/close buttons or is something wrong on my system, i.e. it's displaying the wrong graphics for those 3 items? Thank you.

Thanks! Glad you like it.

Nothing is wrong - that is the way it's supposed to look. I didn't mean for the pictures to be misleading... if you go to the DeviantArt page or the other Victory theme page, linked under More Screenshots, it will show that border.

One of the reasons I made this theme is so that people could pick their own window border, so the pictures were meant to reflect that idea, and to show the theme in different colors with different borders.

The colors and border can be changed through Appearance Preferences (Preferences > Appearance > Theme > Customize). If you change the window border, you will probably need to change the 'tooltip color' under Colors (this controls the menubar color as well).

I can't remember all the borders in the pictures off the top of my head - but if you either check the archive that you download from here, or check your themes directory (/home/yourname/.themes/Victory) you will find an Options folder. In that folder is a text file where I list all the icons, borders, etc I've used in screenshots.

Anyway, hope this helps! Sorry for the confusion. Let me know if you have any other questions or anything and thanks again!

Thanks for the reply. Now I understand re: the min/max/close buttons.

Next...

There's a line in the gtkrc that is generating an error when I open/close nautilus-elementary and appears frequently in the .xsession-errors log.

The problem is: gtk-alternative-sort-arrows = TRUE

It generates the following error:
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `gtk-alternative-sort-arrows' of type `gboolean' from rc file value "((GString*) 0x9df6ea0)" of type `gboolean'

Do you know why this is or what to do about it? I simply commented the offending line in the gtkrc for now.

Also getting this:
(nautilus:2273): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
When I do a nautilus -q and at other times too. Not sure if the two problems are related.

That line was meant to change the direction of the sort arrows in list view, but almost everything I use simply ignores it with that error. That line is safe to delete, and I'll probably take it out for the next update.

I don't think the second error is theme related. I tried it using several different themes, including the default, and it still happens.

Thanks for testing all this out! I miss a lot of problems myself, so it's good if others can help out. Let me know if you find any errors or have any problems in the future!

Yeah, I was wondering why it wasn't working (anti-sort).

I looked at the other window borders from the credits file you mentioned, but I really do like YOURS best. Only one tiny little thing that I don't like...it's the RED in the close button. It just bugs me for some reason.

Could I trouble you for a close.png and close_prelight.png that are the same color/weight as the min and max buttons? If it's too much trouble or a hassle for you, then forget it, I really don't want to impose. I'd do it myself, but I don't have gimp installed on this Lucid system and I'd prefer not installing it because I don't need it for anything else. (SSD-based system - trying to keep it lean & clean).

I don't see another program to edit graphics/colors on the default Lucid install. F-spot doesn't look like it'll do it. Is there one? (Hmmm...maybe I'll just copy them over to the win7 side and use paint?). Thanks.

IMHO, the sidebar background is what really makes this theme stand out. Beautiful!

I really like this theme!

Drop down boxes look better than any other theme, scrollbars in latest version are also very nice. My only gripe was with "close tab" icon standing out too much. I placed stock["gtk-close"] = {{ "Images/close.png", *, *, * }} into default styles and took nice gradient close icon from egtk theme, and now it looks awesome:

If you like how it looks, please integrate this change into the latest version.

Thanks!

Hey, not sure if you still use this Victory theme, but I added your suggestion about the close buttons in the last release.

You're right, it does looks nicer! Thanks for the idea!

Thanks a lot for the compliments. Glad you like the boxes, and the new scrollbars!

I had never really thought about the close button on the tabs. Yours looks really nice. I'll have to play around with this some in the future.

Thanks again for the idea, and feedback!

Hi

First of all, thank you so much for this great theme. I don't normally find good themes arround...in fact, this is my first comment about one.

But I have some issues with the Ubuntu menu bar.

I've noticed that the spacing between elements is not the same in the ubuntu menu bar (the main menu with "applications, places, systems") and the rest of the application menus.

I really like the spacing in the apps menu because is bigger than normal and makes it more usable. I would love to have the same spacing in the ubuntu menu bar...anyone knows howto?

Also tried with the gnome main menu which is a single icon with all the options and the same happens.

I'm attaching 2 screenshots to have an example.

Thanks very much for the compliments! I'm glad you like it so much. Also, thanks for the pictures.

I've actually been trying to reduce the menu sizes, as a lot of people have said they were to big. I kind of like them bigger myself.

You may have to change the menu sizes for yourself. Try this.

Go to /home/yourname/Victory (or Victory Elementary)/gtk-2.0

Open/Display the gtkrc file with gedit

Find the line
Quote:style "menu-item"
And under that, you can change the ythickness to any number. Higher number means more spacing.

I tried this, and it changes the menu size on both the menus and the gnome menubar in the panel. So I'm not sure if this will fix the problem completely.

I'm not sure how to adjust them separately right off. Let me know if that helps at all. If not, I'll try to figure something else out.

Thanks again, and let me know how that works or if you have any other problems or anything.

I've juts tried your solution and did the work. Thanks!

I'll take a look and play with this properties. As I said, with more spacing, gets easier to use for me.

Hi,

I really like your theme but I'm having problems with firefox and thunderbird. On both programs, the menu bar isn't visible (see https://www.dropbox.com/s/ploxuvy1eb56nju/Victory_n_i_O.png)

With other programs, e.g. OO-Writer, everything is fine (see https://www.dropbox.com/s/vy1zp7zvdo3eewc/Victory_i_O.png).

What went wrong? What can I do?

This was a Mozilla bug, but they've fixed it in the latest releases.

For Firefox, you'll have to upgrade to 3.6 or above, and Thunderbird needs 3.1 or above.

If you use Ubuntu, you can find both here at the official PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa

The Thunderbird in that PPA is a bit old. Here's a deb for 3.1 final from the Webup8 site: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/download-thunderbird-31-ubuntu-deb.html

Or if you would feel better downloading it from the official website, it's on there as an archive: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/

Glad you like it, and let me know if you have any other questions or problems, or need more help with this!

It's not very often that this happens, but I really fell in love with this theme of yours :)

Awesome work!

Of course, your theme for the Nautilus breadcrumb bar is awesome. Now I think _every_ breadcrumb bar should be designed like that. It's a really great example of “less is more.”

I also really love what you've done with status bars. It's an adventurous choice (lots of themes are afraid of applying different style in different contexts because so many apps have broken semantics, but yours is doing it really well).

There are just two things that bothered me:
I think the arrow for expander boxes looks a little ugly. Can't put my finger on why. I've just become really accustomed to Murrine's default +/- , I guess.
Tooltips with my chosen colour scheme were grey, which didn't work very well for me.

I also liked half of Small Victory (because of the awesome Moblin icon theme), but I didn't want the "Small" part or the problematic situation of having all those icons that _aren't_ Moblin icons. So, I modified your theme a little and I made an icon theme from a small subset of the Moblin icons.

That is at:
http://people.ubuntu.com/~dylanmccall/themes/monoblin/

And now I think I'll be able to go a while without changing my theme :)

C

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that!

I like your customizations. The icon theme is cool... I wouldn't have thought of doing that. I'm using it now, but with the elementary icons + moblin.

As for the expanders, I never really liked the +/- or the box. To me + means add and - means remove. I'm not sure that a triangle is a good indicator of 'more' either... but I like it better. The elementary icon theme also uses + and - icons in places I don't think make sense either. I think they use them as Ok and Cancel, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

I noticed murrine now defaults to triangle expanders in the newest version. So while trying that out, realized they added (or maybe they were there before and I never noticed) +/- expanders in solid circles. I actually really like the look of this, and might think about using them in the future.

For the tooltip... I'm not sure if I should fix that to a certain set of colors or not. I like the idea of it changing based on the user chosen colors, but sometimes it is hard to see if you choose a certain combination. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the compliments and everything, I'm glad you like it!

hi again.

no, i dont mean that -+x is better then your style, on the contrary i think yours is better.

but what i mean is that, when i come over the buttons with the cursor, i feel that the buttons are a little small. it becomes hard to find the exact point to click on.

maybe you can make a box for them, or find sth else??

Oh, ok - I see what you mean now. Glad you like the arrows, anyway!

I'm not sure what I could do. I don't think boxes would look very good with this border. I really only meant for this border to be a temporary place holder... I thought everyone would pick a different border, haha.

Right now I'm playing around with chaning the window border a little anyway. I'm not sure if it will make this any better, but I'll try and keep it in mind.

Thanks again for the idea. Feel free to let me know if you think of anything else.

Thanks a lot man, glad you like them! I like your desktop a lot - it's really nice! Plus I'm glad you've changed the theme up.

I've actually tried to get rid of the scrollbar line. I can't get it to completely disappear, though. I'll see if I can find some way next time.

In that first screenshot, if you switch from the regular Victory theme to Victory Elementary, the top line will be thinner, and the bottom line will go away.
