GTK2 Themes

Description:

Victory is a bright, flat, and minimalist theme. This theme was made using, and primarily for use on, Xubuntu and Lubuntu 16.04 thru 18.04, but should work fine with any XFCE/LXDE-based distro. Gtk3 elements should work on Gtk 3.18 (Ubuntu 16.04) and above. Even though a Gtk3 theme is provided, I have not tested it on Gnome3, so please report issues. As of the 18.07 release, Gtk3 theming has become the primary focus, and as of this release, all Gtk3 elements should be themed correctly. I've also included variant borders and styles for Openbox and XFWM, as well as a notification theme for XFCE. Again, please let me know if anyone has any problems, thoughts, constructive criticisms, etc.

Thanks again everyone... I really appreciate all the feedback, votes, and comments!

I have also recently set up Patreon and Liberapay pages for those interested in supporting my work, and any contributions are greatly appreciated:

Thanks!

++ Installing ++

To install, downloaded the tar.gz, open it and extract the folder of your preferred theme into your ~/.themes folder (if your home directoy does not have a .themes folder, create one). Then open your desktops Appearance Manager to select the theme.

+ Appearance Managers

- XFCE: xfce4-appearance-settings (for Theme/Controls)
- XFCE: xfwm4-settings (for Window Border)

- LXDE: lxappearance (for Theme/Controls)
- LXDE/Openbox: obconf (for Window Border)

+ Theme Directory is located at /home/USERNAME/.themes

----------------------------------------------------------

++ Configure ++

You can modify the colors and change some styles in the /home/USERNAME/.themes/victory-gtk-theme/gtk-3.20/gtk.css file. Open that file and you can change the colors. At the bottom you can uncomment lines for various custom styles that will affect certain applications or parts of the theme (more styles to be added later). The picture for this theme is using Thunar, for example, with the thunar custom view line uncommented. This removes the back/forward/home buttons from thunar and makes the location bar take up all the space.

In the first preview image I am using the Victory Icon Theme and the wallpaper Flow by tri5tian here on this site. Icons used in the second image (temporarily removed until I have time to re-add the color variants after the 18.07 release) include Boston icons, Arc icons, Papirus icons, Breeze icons.

It's just a suggestion, so don't worry too much about it, you didn't do anything wrong. It's just talking about the icon theme:

I'd like to have a suggestion for a cursor theme: What doi you suggest?

Good work :)

Thanks.

I have no recommendations for a cursor theme! I just use the old DMZ one. The oxy-white is ok. I'm really not a big fan of many cursor themes. A lot of them are too bulky or flashy for me.

Do you have any you like?

Works and looks fine on Xubuntu 10.04, voted you up.
At least in Libre Office 3.3.2 the scroll bar on the right side of a page still has issues (doesn't work properly with the mouse button and is black instead of victory-grey, yet fine with the scroll wheel).

Thanks for sharing,
Michael

Hey, thanks a lot! Both for the comment and the vote! I'm glad it's working good in Xubuntu - it's the first time I'd put that much into XFCE theming, and I wasn't sure I tested it well enough - I tested it on Xubuntu 10.10 and 11.04, but didn't get to check it on 10.04.

For LibreOffice/OpenOffice - I think I forgot to change one part of the gtkrc. Try this and see if it works:

In the gtkrc (/home/yourname/.themes/Victory/gtk-2.0/gtkrc), find the section:

Quote:style "scrollbar"
Under that, you will see four has-stepper entries. They should all be 0 except has-forward-stepper, which should be 1, and stepper-size should be 1. So it should look like this:

Quote:style "scrollbar"
{
GtkScrollbar:: has-backward-stepper = 0
GtkScrollbar:: has-forward-stepper = 1
GtkScrollbar:: has-secondary-backward-stepper = 0
GtkScrollbar:: has-secondary-forward-stepper = 0
GtkRange:: trough-under-steppers = 0
GtkRange:: stepper-size = 1
GtkRange:: arrow-scaling = 0.45

After that, close LibreOffice/OpenOffice and open it again to see if it works. You may have to log out and back in again - sometimes it's weird like that.

I hope I explained this well enough. Let me know how it works or if you have any other problems!

Thanks again!

In addition, i have some feedback i hope you take into consideration :)

Minor things.

1) Seek-bar for panflute is kind of bulky.

2) There are no grip-handles

example of the above two can be see seen in this images where i compare your theme to ubuntu's default:

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4001/screenshot1fg.png

I circled to better show you. (ps: lines are wiggly because my mouse acts funny in ubuntu. i don't have TNI parkison's, lol)

3) panflute's seekbar is one color. it should be a different color one on side to indicate how much has played

4) is there a dark version coming soon??!

thanks for this theme. i am using it as it is, even if none of the above is fixed. it's great.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that.

I'll probably put a newer version up here in the next day or so that will make a few of those things better.

For Panflute, it won't be bulky, but it won't have two different colors. I'll work on that for next time. I noticed several panel problems I'll try to fix next time.

For the grips, I left those out on purpose. I really don't like the grips, and when I first started I tried several different types, but couldn't get one I liked. I'll try it again next time and see how it goes. Thanks for the picture... I was going to ask how you got those shaky lines... I actually like how it looks, haha.

For the dark version of this theme... sorry, I don't think I'll make one. I would in the future like to make an entirely new theme that is specifically made to be dark. Any suggestions on some good dark themes I should take a look at (Linux or otherwise)?

I just took a screenshot and put it up on the Victory Elementary page where I changed the colors of this theme to dark.
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Victory+%28Strikes+Again%29+Elementary+2.30?content=124225

I've tried to make it where the colors could be changed to dark and it still look ok. Have you tried that? And if so, what problems does it have? I'll try to fix whatever I can.

Thanks again for the feedback, and keep letting me know of any more ideas, or problems you have. I don't use dark a lot, so it's good if others can try it out and let me know. Thanks!

Ok i misused the term "dark". I actually meant just the task bar. i'm a big fan of dark taskbars. BUT, if you don't release it with a dark taskbar, i could modify it myself, shouldn't be too hard.

again, great work and thank you for this!

Ah, ok. Yeah, that's easy to do. If you've never used it before, you should definitely check out Gnome Color Chooser. It should be in the Ubuntu repositories (gnome-color-chooser).

http://gnomecc.sourceforge.net

With that you can change the gnome panel text colors, and all kinds of stuff. Anyway, hopefully that works for you.

Thank you for this fantastic theme!!! So fresh!

I have a small issue though. Although Firefox menubar font is bright gray, which makes it properly visible, Thunderbird's is dark, identical to the background colour. That makes the letters completely invisible!

If that's deliberate, it's awesome (how you've managed it), but unusable! :D

I think I'll make this theme permanent regardless of whether you fix the above issue or not. It's so good!

Congrats and thanks again for all your hard work!

Thanks a lot! I didn't even think to check Thunderbird (I don't know why), so thanks for bringing that up.

I can't do anything about that on my part. It is/was a Mozilla bug. Luckily, it's been fixed for the next version of Thunderbird. If you download Thunderbird 3.1 Beta, it should fix this.

If you use Ubuntu, here is the PPA for 3.1 Alpha. It's older, but it worked for me:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa

If you want the latest Thunderbird 3.1 Beta 2, it's on their site:
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/downloads/

The same thing drove me crazy when I started this, since Firefox 3.5 is the same way (they fixed it in 3.6). Mozilla stuff doesn't theme the best, which is why the Toolbar buttons don't match the rest of the theme, and the scrollbars are a little different.

Anyway, I'm glad you like it! Thanks a lot for the comments, and let me know if you have any other problems or anything.

Many thanks Darin,

That was a very helpful reply!

I use Ubuntu at work so I'll wait for a stable version of Thunderbird to upgrade. I use ubuntuzilla for fresh but stable releases, so I won't wait long. :)

The only other issue is that I can't decide whether I would like to ask you for a dark panel version or not! :D

P.S. Could you please let me know which value I can modify in gtkrc so that panel menu items appear more condensed? I have a big menu and a 2560x1024 resolution which doesn't fit it vertically.

Keep it up!

Report

Disregard my last question. I found it under style "menu-item". I just had to make ythickness smaller.

Glad you figured it out!

Hey, I hadn't heard of Ubuntuzilla, that's cool.

For the dark panel, if you're using Gnome, you can use gnome-color-chooser to pick colors of the panel text (plus all kinds of other things). It would be nice if Appearance Preferences allowed a few extra color options, like the panel... but it doesn't. Oh well. Gnome Color Chooser is nice.

Here's a link... it's also in the Ubuntu repositories I think. If not, it has a PPA on the site.
http://gnomecc.sourceforge.net

Anyway, thanks again, and let me know if you have any other problems or anything.
