Mockup: Mail Notifier
Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements

For screenshot, look at the download.
I amm usually always busy, and never see my desktop. I have a SuperKaramba theme there that shows how many new emails I got.
It is not very useful when I hardly ever see it. I often forget to check my mail, and occasionally, there is mail there I need to answer pretty quickly.
I got this idea:
A KDE system tray applet that pops up a small notification whenever you get a new mail.
Functions I think would be cool to include:
- New mail notification *
- New mail amount *
- POP Support *
- IMAP support
- Support for many mail clients, such as Thunderbird, KMail, and perhaps web browsers for those that have webmail and pop/imap. Support meaning that you can click that mail clien's icon or name on the notification and it starts.
- Themability, so the icon in the system tray and the notification can look however the user wants them to look.
Functions marked with * should be mandatorily included, the rest are not that important, and can be excluded.
I hope someone who can code (unlike me) picks up on the idea and makes it a reality. I'm sure it would get popular, and would be pretty useful.

It allows you to monitor different account (with ssl also) and rings when a new email arrives.

I tried running it now, and there's no such app on my system at least. I compiled KDE from source.
Are you sure it ships with KDE?
And where's it's homepage?

Look under KMenu -> Internet -> More Applications -> Korn

anyway, kmail can do such a thing, too. and in KDE 4 many more ways for notification will be added. so this'll be easy. you can by the way even set Kmail to show a passive popup, in kcontrol you can find system events config or something like that. i guess kmail is in there, and will alow you to make some sound, popup, taskbar flash, run script - whatever you want.
i see its in kmail too - configure notifications in the settings menu.

With the dcop interface (and themes in nearly future) it would be possible to do with MetaMonitor. Of course you have to wait for new release (0.5 at least) till all the plans will be implemented if you want to use it.
But communication with other apps (or even custom commands) is one of points, MM want to reach :)

I hope you also include the button function in the notification, so that people don't have to minimize everything to start their mail clients, and that you can make the buttons like the logo of the app.
