Gaim - Flash Notify
Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements
Source (link to git-repo or to original if based on someone elses unmodified work): Add the source-code for this project on opencode.net
I am not sure if it is apropriate to post this here, but I figured that more people might find it useful since not many actually look at the Gaim plugin list.
This is a modification of the Message Notification plugin that comes with Gaim. It adds a flash/toggle option for the conversation window's title text. This allows you to make the title text and therefore taskbar text look like it is moving, thereby catching your attention much more effectively.
I created this plugin because the window 'urgent hint' only flashes 3 or so times when you recieve a message. Often I do not see it in time and then never notice it because it is no longer flashing.
The way I use the plugin is the following:
There is a "Prepend text into window title" box in the Message Notification preferences. I put a bunch of spaces in there so that when the title is being toggled between normal text and the prepended text, it looks like the text is jumping from left to right.
Issues:
1. The perference's "prepend text into window" option does not save the text you enter until the check box is checked. So if the checkbox is already checked when you change the text, you must uncheck and recheck it.
2. This plugin is a modification of the original Message Notification plugin and will overwrite the old notify.c and notify.so files. Backup as nessessary.
Installation:
1. Download and untar the Gaim source code.
2. Untar the notify.so.tar.gz file into your {gaim source}/plugins directory.
3. cd to {gaim source} directory.
4. run ./configure
5. cd to plugins.
6. run 'make notify.so'
7. Move the new notify.so file to your gaim libs directory. Mine is located at /usr/lib/gaim/notify.so
Here is a link to an animated gif so you can see what the plugin action actually looks like: http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/dmeehl/FlashNotify.gif

Also: is there a particular reason for you not to use Kopete?

I tried Kopete in it's infant days and didn't like it too much because certain things just weren't finished. Now I've been using Gaim for a while so I am used to that. I tried Kopete again a while ago and there were some things that just didnt suit my taste. So I guess there isnt a real reason except that I'm used to Gaim and I like the way it works.
