News: ONLY A NEWS UPDATE
========================================
If you are using or used or care about KBFX , We are sure, you are wondering about the progress KBFX. We haven't forgotten you or the project. We will add some most requested features to KBFX
and 100's of bug fixes reported on our bug tracker and release KBFX for KDE3 as soon as we can,

For KDE4 we will use the Raptor-menu Menu engine, the interface nookie has designed this time is really a NextGen, unbeatable and breath taking. so stay tuned for that. so we will fist finish raptor menu engine (http://www.raptor-menu.org) then move on to KBFX for KDE4.

We are also doing PlexyDesk, I'll add a project entry after I make this posting . PlexyDesk is a
modular desktop render. PlexyDesk will introduce a new and an effective way to use your desktop, yet keep the classic metaphor intact.visit us at http://www.plexydesk.org or #plexydesk at
freenode , we would like to hear from you

Thank you.

===========================================================
KBFX is an alternative to the classical K-Menu button and it's menu.
It improves the user experience by enabling the user to set a bigger (and thus more visible) start button and by finally replacing the Win95-like K-Menu.
But if you still want the old menu, because you're used to it, it is still available as an option in KBFX.
We recommend, however, that you give the Spinx bar a try.
===========================================================

===========================================================
Hi all,
KBFX now has been moved to KDE Extragear.
Expect a lot more new features in our next release for KDE3.
In the meantime we are coding KBFX for KDE4 too, so we are a bit busy now.
But that DOES NOT mean that we won't support you and the KDE3 version.
Very soon we will implement the keyboard shortcuts support in KBFX....
Just stay tuned ;)

Love you all ;) :-*

"KBFX Silk" (0.4.9.3.1)
===========================================================

Hello everyone,

After a long silence from us now we are happy to announce that finally the
stable release of KBFX is ready.
We made a lot of changes to the KBFX Configurator and to KBFX Menu itself.
However we were not able to implement everything you proposed and everything we
wanted. So some of the features (see the TODO list in the source files)
in "KBFX Silk" (0.4.9.3.1) are still not ready. We are sure that they will
present in the next stable release which will be due just after KDE4 is
released. The menu itself, however, is fully functional.

Thanks to all of you who gave us ideas and who tested the prerelease versions of
KBFX.

When you download and install this version you may report the found bugs at
http://bugs.kbfx.net or in an email to phobosk(at)mail.kbfx.net

We wait for your opinion and reports.

Take a look at the renewed sections "How To?" of kbfx.net:
http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=20060224123135907

We advise all the KBFX theme authors to have a look at the article "How to
create themes for 0.4.9.3" at http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=howto0493
in order to transform their themes from the old format to the new one ;)
And look at all the documents in the doc folder of the sources.
For additional help on install see here:
http://websvn.kde.org/branches/extragear/kde3/addons/kbfx/doc/INSTALL?view=markup

All the best from your KBFX Team. :)

P.S. Soon we will release the highest rated on Kde-Look KBFX themes as a package containing 20 themes. We just wait for their authors to transform them into the new theme specs.

Note: Things to be considered before installing "KBFX Silk"
===========================================================

1.) To configure and compile "KBFX Silk" you need Cmake >= 2.4.2 from http://www.cmake.org

2.) To configure, compile and install "KBFX Silk" simply run ./build.sh

3.) Before the install of "KBFX Silk", please unload and uninstall any previous version of KBFX.

4.) After the install of "KBFX Silk" please relogin KDE.

5.) If you need file searching capabilities in KBFX, please download and install Strigi
from http://strigi.sf.net

6.) To enable Strigi support in KBFX, please pass "--strigi" OR "-s" option to build.sh
i.e: ./build.sh --strigi

************WARNINIG************

The Skin Spec for KBFX Silk has undergone radical changes!
Many of the themes on kde-look.org might not work!
We encourage theme authors to update their skins or make new ones.
For help on that see here:
http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=howto0493

Thank you.

I am just testing the new version and i think its a BIG step forward.. i dont like the default thems very much though.. but the "skinning" abilities of the app realy got great. (Just Starting my first theme ;P )

What i would love to see is an option to skin the right panel (list) other than the left list, so you can make it to just show big icons.

You can set it up this way but than the left panel resizes too off course.

And off course the comeback of recent applications.

Just install your distribution's package named "cmake".
And in order to compile you will also need the kde devel package...

searched around... how do u pop up a kbfx menu from kxdocker? is there a dcop command or something similar?

Report

Well I have not tried kxdocker lately... :(
If it supports kicker applets there should be no problems using KBFX....
If it doesn't support kicker applets - well that is bad...
The dcop call is:
dcop kicker kbfxDevelnterface showMenu
but KBFX applet should be added to the kicker first (the dcop will be renamed to "KbfxInterface showMenu" in stable release).
FYI - for dcop calls "debug" use the app "kdcop"

Did you hit apply button after selecting the kde style menu?
Yes.

I have found one other thing, when selecting (OpenSUSE 10.2) the classic kde menu it's ok but when selecting the openSUSE menu and than selection kde menu within KBFX, it open the openSUSE layout wrong. (to big).
I know this is not a bug of KBFX but I think you want to know.

I'm using Slackware 11, and I have compiled and installed succesfully current version of kbfx. When I apply changes, nothing happens, except the taskbar (kicker) dissapears for a second.
After that the old kmenu is still present.
Version of KDE is 3.5.4

Usually the problem is that you have not added the KBFX applet to the pannel you want. KBFX is a kicker applet like "Clock", "Lock and Logout buttons" etc. so before you see any change you need to add KBFX to the pannel by right clicking on the pannel and selecting "Add applet to panel"

"Ctrl+Alt+S - have you compiled with strigi support?"

No, I haven't compiled it with strigi support unless it was done automatically. Nevertheless "Ctrl-Alt-S" clears the menu instead of launching the program I have assigned to that shortcut.

I hope this shortcut for strigi will be customizable because I don't want to change my shortcuts.

You don't mention what distro you use but your problem is that you have to install the development packages of KDE - that means usually libkde dev and kdecore dev. Anyway the names depend on the distro

Is there a way that the kbfx menu can show the user where he is in the menu? Something like a progress bar or percentage? I just looked a the typical Debian submenu all Debian based distributions have which holds *all* installed applications (in submenus - but in kbfx in a long long long scroll list) and wondered how long I still have to scroll... For those long menus it also would be very convenient to have a slider the user could grab with the mouse to quickly go to far away places in the scoll list - just like the browser scrollbar sliders for websites.

And now I'll be quiet for the moment ;).

Never thought about that... well maybe will be a good idea... I've just added it to the TODO list of KBFX.
Thanks for the proposal

The way to handle submenus isn't very elegant and clear IMHO. How does kbfx handle submenus in submenus? As equally to first level submenus. Why do I have submenus in submenus (second level submenus)? Because I want to sort my entries, because I want to assign certain applications to certain subcategories, because I want a better overview.

In my kmenu I have a lot of second, third and even fourth level submenus which are all converted to first level submenus in kbfx. If kbfx is not capabale of handling second level submenus correctly it should at least show the submenu name as header above the second level submenu, the second level submenu name above the third level submenu name and so on. And /or show those second level submenus closed by default so that the user have to click on it to see its content. And/or give different submenu levels different colors. And/or chain all content of a submenu with a colored sidebar at the left or right of the entries (which might also vertically show the name of the first level submenu). By now I don't have any clue where my entries belong to.

Maybe this makes a bit more clear what I mean (or maybe it does the contrary ;) ): http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2026/kbfxsubmenusweirdod7.jpg

BTW: When I press ctrl-alt-s (which I have defined as start ksnapshot) when the kbfx menu is open the middle menu gets totally cleared - what's that?
