News: ONLY A NEWS UPDATE
========================================
If you are using or used or care about KBFX , We are sure, you are wondering about the progress KBFX. We haven't forgotten you or the project. We will add some most requested features to KBFX
and 100's of bug fixes reported on our bug tracker and release KBFX for KDE3 as soon as we can,

For KDE4 we will use the Raptor-menu Menu engine, the interface nookie has designed this time is really a NextGen, unbeatable and breath taking. so stay tuned for that. so we will fist finish raptor menu engine (http://www.raptor-menu.org) then move on to KBFX for KDE4.

We are also doing PlexyDesk, I'll add a project entry after I make this posting . PlexyDesk is a
modular desktop render. PlexyDesk will introduce a new and an effective way to use your desktop, yet keep the classic metaphor intact.visit us at http://www.plexydesk.org or #plexydesk at
freenode , we would like to hear from you

Thank you.

===========================================================
KBFX is an alternative to the classical K-Menu button and it's menu.
It improves the user experience by enabling the user to set a bigger (and thus more visible) start button and by finally replacing the Win95-like K-Menu.
But if you still want the old menu, because you're used to it, it is still available as an option in KBFX.
We recommend, however, that you give the Spinx bar a try.
===========================================================

===========================================================
Hi all,
KBFX now has been moved to KDE Extragear.
Expect a lot more new features in our next release for KDE3.
In the meantime we are coding KBFX for KDE4 too, so we are a bit busy now.
But that DOES NOT mean that we won't support you and the KDE3 version.
Very soon we will implement the keyboard shortcuts support in KBFX....
Just stay tuned ;)

Love you all ;) :-*

"KBFX Silk" (0.4.9.3.1)
===========================================================

Hello everyone,

After a long silence from us now we are happy to announce that finally the
stable release of KBFX is ready.
We made a lot of changes to the KBFX Configurator and to KBFX Menu itself.
However we were not able to implement everything you proposed and everything we
wanted. So some of the features (see the TODO list in the source files)
in "KBFX Silk" (0.4.9.3.1) are still not ready. We are sure that they will
present in the next stable release which will be due just after KDE4 is
released. The menu itself, however, is fully functional.

Thanks to all of you who gave us ideas and who tested the prerelease versions of
KBFX.

When you download and install this version you may report the found bugs at
http://bugs.kbfx.net or in an email to phobosk(at)mail.kbfx.net

We wait for your opinion and reports.

Take a look at the renewed sections "How To?" of kbfx.net:
http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=20060224123135907

We advise all the KBFX theme authors to have a look at the article "How to
create themes for 0.4.9.3" at http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=howto0493
in order to transform their themes from the old format to the new one ;)
And look at all the documents in the doc folder of the sources.
For additional help on install see here:
http://websvn.kde.org/branches/extragear/kde3/addons/kbfx/doc/INSTALL?view=markup

All the best from your KBFX Team. :)

P.S. Soon we will release the highest rated on Kde-Look KBFX themes as a package containing 20 themes. We just wait for their authors to transform them into the new theme specs.

Note: Things to be considered before installing "KBFX Silk"
===========================================================

1.) To configure and compile "KBFX Silk" you need Cmake >= 2.4.2 from http://www.cmake.org

2.) To configure, compile and install "KBFX Silk" simply run ./build.sh

3.) Before the install of "KBFX Silk", please unload and uninstall any previous version of KBFX.

4.) After the install of "KBFX Silk" please relogin KDE.

5.) If you need file searching capabilities in KBFX, please download and install Strigi

************WARNINIG************

The Skin Spec for KBFX Silk has undergone radical changes!
Many of the themes on kde-look.org might not work!
We encourage theme authors to update their skins or make new ones.
For help on that see here:

Well the concept of KBFX is flat menu use (you may read section "Concepts" on
http://www.kbfx.org/staticpages/index.php?page=20060224122723802)
So there are a lot of pros and cons the flat and the hierarchical structured menues.
Maybe later we can think of something like coloring the submenus but that should be discussed with our users of course. You are welcome for discussion on #kbfx on freenode IRC

Ctrl+Alt+S - have you compiled with strigi support?

Please help: How can I bribe kbfx to accept my kicker size of 72 without using a bigger button?

And how can I make the menu about half a program group higher? I have 16 program groups and just 15,5 are shown so that the left side of the menu always wobbles when I have passed have the menu which is very irritating.

I tried to build kbfx20070117 - and the result is a "menu" without applications and a cut username which takes about 1 minute to load.

http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/1786/kbfx200701cm2.jpg

And can you please please please change that ugly small very bad readable font used for "change the settings" or add an option so that the user can change it?

Thanks, looks better now, really forgot deleting kbfxrc.

But: Using build.sh I have installed it without giving notice to my package manager which isn't a wise idea on a debian system. How do I make a deb package out of it? I tried stopping at "Do you want to install KBFX?" and used checkinstall but that didn't work. I'd really prefer a simple configure/make build.

The new kbfx look is way better than the old but it still is awfully slow. The standard fly-out K-menu is much faster and much faster to use.

And please, please, please: STOP kbfx from shrinking my kicker, that's a pita!

In the settings (which really take a long time, about 3 seconds, to show, I am not sure about the "Resize Tollbar" setting - is it on or off (doesn't make any difference though so I guess it doesn't work in this version)? The button is not pressed and the text on it says "OFF". Looking at the tooltip settings the buttons are ON when the button says "OFF" - but they are pressed. Please can you clearify this and make it consistent?

Ok,
1. Building a .deb with cmake installation - I don't know how... You may ask in debian forums or google around, but cmake is much faster than autoconf/automake tools and is the default in KDE4 so we moved to it for future compliance...

2. The resize toolbar problem - gone now but the fix is still in SVN - will be in the release next week - sorry about that but it is a bug in 20070117 - we warned that this is still alpha release - made just to give our users the latest code and to be of help to our theme developers to start transforming their old themes into the new specs. For this the docs are nearly ready - look at kbfx.org

3. Yes the configapp loads slowly but after the load there are no more delays, another way is to have small delay after every selection of an option from the left.

4. Yes you are right there is a little confusion with these buttons - the button for toolbar is meant to be (fixed already) "Toolbar Resize is 'OFF'" or "Toolbar Resize is 'ON'" as for the buttons for the tooltip say (even now) TURN the tooltip ON etc.
For now tooltips are not implemented and we are thinking of removing them - what would you say?

Report

janet

Thanks for your detailed answer. I don't like the tooltip for kbfx so I wouldn't bother if it would be removed. It doesn't give any useful information.

But maybe you could copy the large ON/OFF indicator for the tooltip setting to the toolbar resize ON/OFF?

two things to do with the makefile and build.sh that I noticed:

1) Top level build directory should probably be /usr instead of /build.

2) A file check for sudo should be added, since I run Ubuntu 6.10 and the su command seems to not work for me.

Other than that, nice job. Keep it up.

instead of kbfxdir/build.

Report

PhobosK

Well this directory can be named anyhow. It doesn't matter...
I decided to use the name "build" just for convenience. In this directory the files/libraries are only built nothing more. We use "make install" in order to use KBFX :)

As for the "sudo" command - do you think it will let you do the install just that without touching anything on the default configuration of Ubuntu?

Anyway the ./build.sh script is only for convenience ...
If "su" does not work for you you may answer to the install question with "N" and next "cd" to the folder "build" and there do: "make install" (as root).
