News: ONLY A NEWS UPDATE
========================================
If you are using or used or care about KBFX , We are sure, you are wondering about the progress KBFX. We haven't forgotten you or the project. We will add some most requested features to KBFX
and 100's of bug fixes reported on our bug tracker and release KBFX for KDE3 as soon as we can,

For KDE4 we will use the Raptor-menu Menu engine, the interface nookie has designed this time is really a NextGen, unbeatable and breath taking. so stay tuned for that. so we will fist finish raptor menu engine (http://www.raptor-menu.org) then move on to KBFX for KDE4.

We are also doing PlexyDesk, I'll add a project entry after I make this posting . PlexyDesk is a
modular desktop render. PlexyDesk will introduce a new and an effective way to use your desktop, yet keep the classic metaphor intact.visit us at http://www.plexydesk.org or #plexydesk at
freenode , we would like to hear from you

Thank you.

===========================================================
KBFX is an alternative to the classical K-Menu button and it's menu.
It improves the user experience by enabling the user to set a bigger (and thus more visible) start button and by finally replacing the Win95-like K-Menu.
But if you still want the old menu, because you're used to it, it is still available as an option in KBFX.
We recommend, however, that you give the Spinx bar a try.
===========================================================

===========================================================
Hi all,
KBFX now has been moved to KDE Extragear.
Expect a lot more new features in our next release for KDE3.
In the meantime we are coding KBFX for KDE4 too, so we are a bit busy now.
But that DOES NOT mean that we won't support you and the KDE3 version.
Very soon we will implement the keyboard shortcuts support in KBFX....
Just stay tuned ;)

Love you all ;) :-*

"KBFX Silk" (0.4.9.3.1)
===========================================================

Hello everyone,

After a long silence from us now we are happy to announce that finally the
stable release of KBFX is ready.
We made a lot of changes to the KBFX Configurator and to KBFX Menu itself.
However we were not able to implement everything you proposed and everything we
wanted. So some of the features (see the TODO list in the source files)
in "KBFX Silk" (0.4.9.3.1) are still not ready. We are sure that they will
present in the next stable release which will be due just after KDE4 is
released. The menu itself, however, is fully functional.

Thanks to all of you who gave us ideas and who tested the prerelease versions of
KBFX.

When you download and install this version you may report the found bugs at
http://bugs.kbfx.net or in an email to phobosk(at)mail.kbfx.net

We wait for your opinion and reports.

Take a look at the renewed sections "How To?" of kbfx.net:
http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=20060224123135907

We advise all the KBFX theme authors to have a look at the article "How to
create themes for 0.4.9.3" at http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=howto0493
in order to transform their themes from the old format to the new one ;)
And look at all the documents in the doc folder of the sources.
For additional help on install see here:
http://websvn.kde.org/branches/extragear/kde3/addons/kbfx/doc/INSTALL?view=markup

All the best from your KBFX Team. :)

P.S. Soon we will release the highest rated on Kde-Look KBFX themes as a package containing 20 themes. We just wait for their authors to transform them into the new theme specs.

Note: Things to be considered before installing "KBFX Silk"
===========================================================

1.) To configure and compile "KBFX Silk" you need Cmake >= 2.4.2 from http://www.cmake.org

2.) To configure, compile and install "KBFX Silk" simply run ./build.sh

3.) Before the install of "KBFX Silk", please unload and uninstall any previous version of KBFX.

4.) After the install of "KBFX Silk" please relogin KDE.

5.) If you need file searching capabilities in KBFX, please download and install Strigi
from http://strigi.sf.net

6.) To enable Strigi support in KBFX, please pass "--strigi" OR "-s" option to build.sh
i.e: ./build.sh --strigi

************WARNINIG************

The Skin Spec for KBFX Silk has undergone radical changes!
Many of the themes on kde-look.org might not work!
We encourage theme authors to update their skins or make new ones.
For help on that see here:
http://www.kbfx.net/staticpages/index.php?page=howto0493

Thank you.

for now a reload is needed. and try to see if /home/you/.face.icon is the image u changed . if not just replace face.icon with the image u want and reload kbfx with the config. if it dose not there. just
use rename ur jpeg as .face.icon and place it on ur home folder.

I really dislike the latest kbfx, I wanted simplicity, that is why I switched to kbfx.

Will use the KDE menu style from now on and only use kbfx to style the kicker button.

Pity...
:(

Hello mate

You are frustrated because of - in your view - lack of simplicity? Well, one thing first: if what you mean is the 3 column construct, we have still 2column constructs available. I don't see any change in behaviour beside of that - and the fact, that there are more pluglets (which you neednt use) and a bigger config (which you use once and then can forget forever, if you chose so).

In fact, with 2 column presentation and no plugins enabled, it's even simpler, because of the finally resolved issue with the scroll bars, now being at the appropriate place.

If you still wouldn't want to use the menu itself, fine - you're free to choose. But I think that a 2nd look could well change your oppinion.

All the best to over there...

I will keep it installed and see what future updates have in store, but the three column view and the fact that it is still early in development (some menus not working - Layout and Plugins).

It is no biggie and my themes won't suffer just because of this, if after a few months I still don't like the new feel then I could always revert back to the older versions.

We have added complexity preserving the simplicity, This is the start..maybe the first step, as we mature u will see that this is the MOST simple...hard to explain now..but as time progress u will see not with words but by examples. :-)

well, i tried it (as some other releases before):

- default theme is way too big on my 1400x1050 resolution
- the menu is not resizeable
- maybe you can change the size of the kicker bar when loading the applet and resize the buttons accordingly
- i have some refresh issues when scolling with the bars in the menu
- some menu entries do not fit (german)
- i want more config options ;-)

Thanks very much for the issues listed.
As announced this is an alpha realese that is for our most impatient users in order for them to see what will KBFX look like.
Most of the things you say are present but have to be configured in a text file.
Totally right about the configure options....but the configure application is being developed (I mean new features added to it).
We will have in mind all your proposals too.

First how did you compile it?
Second did you remove any old versions of KBFX and RELOGGIN KDE?
Third what is the output of "locate libkbfxplasma.so" (i.e. where is libkbfxplasma.so situated and where are the kdelibs?

Report

prefix: /opt/kde3
compiled as suggested in manual, 32 bit system.
I don't have locate installed, but whereis can't find that library, kde 3.5.5.
Kfind shows it is in /opt/kde3/lib.

Cannot create a rpm file using your BUILD.SH procedure on a SuSE 10.2

?????

Report

shadzik

14 years ago

Since when do you need the build.sh script inside a tarball to create an rpm ? You really shouldn't use such methods and do it rather by yourself using cmake.
If you'd like to see how this is properly done see http://cvs.pld-linux.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/SPECS/kbfx.spec

Report

PhobosK

14 years ago

@shadzik,
Do I sense some kind of irony?
I've never said that our kbfx.spec file is perfect, but you better than me know that it can be written in several ways. And also it is very easy to maintain one distro's spec file (and comment on other people work) than several.
As for the using of build script to master the rpm - better follow our spec file closely - it doesn't use the build script but uses a separate "build" directory where cmake to do its job (although that is not necessary in the case of building an rpm but it is easier to maintain that way and follows some kind of pattern afterall).
I do have some notes on your spec file but i'd rather not comment on that.
I think the best way is to combine efforts and write a universal spec file working on most of the RPM based distroes.

As for the problem of @linux3114a - it was not at all connected with the spec file or any of the code of KBFX, but with the way the rpm is build.... so.... that is all....

Report

PhobosK

I need more info on that.... can you contact me by ICQ or in the irc (e-mail too)?
