UPDATE: (01/31/05):

I just wanted to update everyone and thanks those responsible and all the people that have helped me along the way.

I appears (thanks Jeff and Mr. Riddell) that it has, hold your drinks, been put into the latest CVS. I am busting with happiness and not much on speeches :)

UPDATE: (01/02/05):

Finished. The final, polished, versions of about:knoqueror, Info Center/Control Center, and KMail.

UPDATE: (01/01/05):

Ok, first off sorry to keep bumping this to the top with updates ;) This is going to be the last one till the final set is complete (Which should be hopefully tomorrow, we'll see how my inpiration hits me). I have reworked much of the boxes, added some polish and am going to give each client its own background. I would like to have the text use a scroll bar instead of the resizing currently being used but dont know if thats going to be feasible or not (crossing fingers). Idealy I would like the text restricted to a somewhat small font but that wont particularly matter if its got a toolbar. Anyway I am hoping everything goes well, the devs like it enough to want to get it into KDE 3.4 (they have as much of my help as humanly possible in that field). I am really hoping on talking to one of the devs about how to actual get it in there as its still very much a bunch of pixels in a PNG file at this point ;) Anyway, I just wanted to keep everyone updated and thank them again for their support.

UPDATE: (12/30/04):

I have officially entered it into the KDE Artist mailing list. I have spoken with someone and he would like to see changes made to KMail and about:konqueror as well and they will see what they can do about sneaking it into KDE 3.4. I have begun work on KMail and doing the about page for Konqueror shouldnt be to hard.

They are all still perliminary but its looking good to have the changes made to these programs. It is still very early and things may fall apart during the coding stage as some code will need to be changed but its atleast rolling.

Wanted to thank everyone for their tremendous support.

UPDATE: (12/29/04):

I have been playing around with the actual KCC now. KCC and KIC both call upon PNGs located in %KDEINSTALL%/share/apps/kcontrol/pics. I have modified some of those PNGs to create actual working models. It doesnt resize and it basically will only work for me (or anyone else who is running the identical font and window size) but this is actually what my KCC looks like.

I have emailed KDE and await an answer but I guess this 3rd entry is an example of how you could theme your KCC to your specific disro :)

I find the graphics in the KDE Control Center really need an overhaul. I would love KDE to set itself apart become much more pleasing to the eye. They still hold many "80'ish" design styles (Lets also get plastik or is derivatives to the default style huh guys?) and really need to push into the 21st century with some of the graphically beautiful features that are available.

Thank you. I just made some changes to it and had the better part of today to polish it up. I think its pretty much finished, well I know I will tweak it some more perhaps but I dont think any more drastic changes are coming.

Still ify about the box in the bottom portion but its growing on me :)

Anyway thanks again for the compliments.

I would be really nice to have a style that looked list this.

Again most styles seem to come from the 80's when we only had 16 colours and everything had to be a straight line.

I don't want to be rude, but I think it looks terrible. I'm not saying that the current design is *good*, just that this isn't the right way to go. Personally (still), I'd like to see as little graphics as possible in GUIs, just when it has a symbolic value (i e all icons, in wizards and so on).

You people make me laugh. Just because its not commandline or a GUI not far off from it, it all looks "horrible".

I am not a fan of over GUIfying but I do know limits. Just because its not commandline or not far from it, does it actually warrant a comment like that? I know some people might not like it because it doesnt suit their tastes but to step on because its not what you want, is pigheaded...then again, if you are ANTI-GUI, then why the hell are you a member of KDE-Look.org and further more, why the hell are you running, on par with Gnome, one of the most graphical DEs available on Linux??? Thank Jebus, people like you are a minority or we would never have left commandline.

I could understand a negative look if this new GUI was used for all modules in the CC, but its simply a prettier theme, but you have my curiosity peeked. How about you help out the community and throw up a mockup of what you think CC should look like...or is your usefullness restricted to non-constructive criticism...should I even bother going through your profile and seeing what contributions you have done?

Throw something helpful in next time, even if its against the grain...

This should definitely
go into KDE 3.4. I once tried
to file a bug on a different
issue saying "Please take
xy from kde-look into KDE".
But I was told that not the KDE
team is taking software into KDE but
the author has to ask if he
can put this into KDE.
So, I guess the author has to
file a bug himself or contact
the kde team to put this
into KDE 3.4. Please, please,
do this! 95% of the people
on kde-look are behind
you judging from the votes ;-)

Thanks rgfree. I will certainly raise some eyebrows. jbailey has been working with the code and I have been making any graphical component he needs to do this. While it is coming along, I think it still needs a lot of work, but I was kinda waiting for the time we could present them with a working model and of course I would have to get arcisz's permission as well since its his art that is going in as well. But if everything falls apart, I will go and talk to KDE either way as if someone was willing to work with me on the coding end and didnt mind dealing with a perfectionist, then I would certainly do the graphical end...

Slightly off topic....

I'm beginning to think that maybe a group of us (designers, programmers) should start a new project with the sole aim of improving the visual elements of KDE throughout, and perhaps offer themes and patches for the most hideous of KDE apps (think, the K button Menu, ugly box with menus and icons... its the most hideous I've seen). However, I still believe that a project like this should NOT concentrate on improving usability, only because changing source code can sometimes break other programs abilities to work properly, and as such should be left to the actual developers to change them.
Anyone with ideas on this?
(keep it constructive please)

any chance of getting the new desing into kde3.4? i know an alpha is out but surely they wont mind better graphics....

That would be nice but I doubt it. Hopefully if Baily and I come up with a workable product to offer them, it might have a shot but if we show up without any work done, I doubt it as its probably not a priority for them to make things "look nice". To bad esthetics always take a backseat ;)

I think the best thing would be an amalgamation of the Info Center and the CC. Then to rewrite the code to better suite a nice layout. Then to have that layout be themeable much like the splash page. But themeable or not, I would settle for some nicer graphics for the time being and thats all this is...pleasing to the eye, not some radical changes to CC that everyone seems to expect.

Before graphic improvements some usability changes would be nice.

Basically regarding asking for confirmation when switching modules or asking password again and again when you must gain administrator privileges.

It would be very nice, especially considering the amount of requests and comments that are posted around the web about the usability of the Control Center. However, just because the changes we all would like to see haven't been implemented yet, it should not mean that we just sit around waiting for the changes before we concentrate on visuals.

This is a great design! While it cant be a definitive solution to kcontrol's ui, its a damn good improvement!

Hoping to see some code soon!

I actually have been working closely with lokheed on this, and a screenshot of what I have been working on is available:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/jbaileys/KControlCenter2.png

This IS actually what my KControlCenter looks like now after the modifications I made to the source code, and needs some minor adjustments, so hopefully a patch will be available in the next few days.
As far as usability is concerned, nothing has changed at all from the previous KControlCenter. This little project is only intended to improve the visuals of KControlCenter, and any changes people wish to be made to the usability of the ControlCenter need to be forwarded to the appropriate KDE developers.
