UPDATE: (01/31/05):

I just wanted to update everyone and thanks those responsible and all the people that have helped me along the way.

I appears (thanks Jeff and Mr. Riddell) that it has, hold your drinks, been put into the latest CVS. I am busting with happiness and not much on speeches :)

Finished. The final, polished, versions of about:knoqueror, Info Center/Control Center, and KMail.

Ok, first off sorry to keep bumping this to the top with updates ;) This is going to be the last one till the final set is complete (Which should be hopefully tomorrow, we'll see how my inpiration hits me). I have reworked much of the boxes, added some polish and am going to give each client its own background. I would like to have the text use a scroll bar instead of the resizing currently being used but dont know if thats going to be feasible or not (crossing fingers). Idealy I would like the text restricted to a somewhat small font but that wont particularly matter if its got a toolbar. Anyway I am hoping everything goes well, the devs like it enough to want to get it into KDE 3.4 (they have as much of my help as humanly possible in that field). I am really hoping on talking to one of the devs about how to actual get it in there as its still very much a bunch of pixels in a PNG file at this point ;) Anyway, I just wanted to keep everyone updated and thank them again for their support.

UPDATE: (12/30/04):

I have officially entered it into the KDE Artist mailing list. I have spoken with someone and he would like to see changes made to KMail and about:konqueror as well and they will see what they can do about sneaking it into KDE 3.4. I have begun work on KMail and doing the about page for Konqueror shouldnt be to hard.

They are all still perliminary but its looking good to have the changes made to these programs. It is still very early and things may fall apart during the coding stage as some code will need to be changed but its atleast rolling.

Wanted to thank everyone for their tremendous support.

UPDATE: (12/29/04):

I have been playing around with the actual KCC now. KCC and KIC both call upon PNGs located in %KDEINSTALL%/share/apps/kcontrol/pics. I have modified some of those PNGs to create actual working models. It doesnt resize and it basically will only work for me (or anyone else who is running the identical font and window size) but this is actually what my KCC looks like.

I have emailed KDE and await an answer but I guess this 3rd entry is an example of how you could theme your KCC to your specific disro :)

I find the graphics in the KDE Control Center really need an overhaul. I would love KDE to set itself apart become much more pleasing to the eye. They still hold many "80'ish" design styles (Lets also get plastik or is derivatives to the default style huh guys?) and really need to push into the 21st century with some of the graphically beautiful features that are available.

It is not the visual appaerance, the explanaitions of the modules are really crap:

Background = change background settings


For me the main problem are these descriptions and the structure.

And: How can I customize Kmenu with ControlCenter?

a theme includes styles, background etc., So this is on a higher level and not topic 8 under modules that are to be subordinated.

Further need: Integrate other Config tools into controlCenter auch as Wine configuration. Such as Software mangement

What exactly am I trying to download? I keep clicking the download button, but am getting an image. Mozilla, Firefox, and konqueror are doing the same thing. WHAT THE HECK???

The download is not a patch to improve KControl Center. This is simply an idea on how to make the Control Center look better.

excellent. very nice patch.

i think having a contest would be a great idea. perhaps some incentive like a kde-look/kde t-shirt of some sort.

someone can announce the theme contest on slashdot and get the word out. then i'm sure there'll be even more interesting ideas and submissions pouring into this site.

Only "drawback" I see might be with distro's that do some mild re-organization of the menu tree. However if this can remain as flexable as the current version I say go for it. Very clean, very smooth.

I looked at the source code for KControl.
For those who want to hack at it, get the KDE Base source code, and go to kcontol/kcontrol/aboutwidget.cpp

the changes need to be made there to cater for any kinds of new graphics layouts.
the basic png's are kept in the pics folder in the kcontrol/kcontrol/ directory.. They too will have to be changed.
Also note, if anyone is going to hack at this, just remember the graphics you use cannot contain writing... the writing gets added in by aboutwidget.cpp to cater for the different languages.

It doesnt look all that difficult to change, but can be time consuming! Good Luck

I nice way to implement this would be to let aboutwidget.cpp generate an xmlstring containing the textual data to be represented. For example:

<aboutdata>
  <title>Appeareance and Themes</title>
  <entry name="Background" description="Change the background settings"/>
  <entry name="Colors" description="Change color settings"/>
  [...]
</aboutdata>

Then you could write an XSL stylesheet to convert that in a nice formated HTML page. This page could then be rendered with khtml.
Since displaying is only done through the XSL stylesheet it would be easily themable. Everyone could write their own stylesheet and use their own graphics in it.

Can this method handle internationalisation? I think the reason it was coded this way originally was to handle the many languages KDE has to run on.
Also, how would this affect speed? I've noticed that widgets rendered from XML tend to be slow, and might possibly make the main Control page sluggish. Thankfully, there is not much detail to these pages, so your idea might be the best option we have.

The graphic that greets you when launching kcontrol is kde 2ish. We need something Crystal-like. I like your design because it plays off of the default splash screen. But maybe like splash screens, this could be something themeable in the future, and for instance a Nuvola-style help template and kcontrol graphic could be made.

I was thinking the samething. We can customize the splash screen, show it wouldnt be that hard to theme this one either...you would only need a few elements and bam, custom look...which would really be the ideal way cause some might want red, or some might want purple, and some might want something completely different to suit their theme.

I would love to see KDE become completely themeable...pushing the envelop...first things first, gotta get those KDE guys to look into this :)

dude....i think your new goal in your life is to make next KDE 4.0 Control Center have that sweet, neat look implemented.

Also agree that is would be kind of stupid if the KDE-Dev team reject your idea...
