>> for the version numer i tried to add -version-info in tastymenu_panelapplet_la_LDFLAGS on Makefile.am, but it doesn't seem to work, is there some other thing it needs to be done to achieve this?

I will ask about this at the next Fedora KDE SIG meeting on Tuesday and see if anyone has some suggestions.

-------------

Okay, I was able to contact our KDE lead packager, and he suggested to simply install the library in LIBDIR/kde3. We can accomplish this easily with:

configure --libdir=/usr/lib/kde3

It appears this is the location where all other panel applets are installed.

I'm not sure if anything needs to be changed on your end, perhaps add /kde3 to libdir automatically?

Thanks.

Sorry for this stupid question, but how do I use this? I compiled and installed without any errors, but I can't find a way to use it. I thought I could add this to kicker via add mini program / applet (don't know the original english name, I'm talking about right-click on kicker and then the first menu entry).

Exactly the same way as you describe. Which linux distribution are you using?

I'm using openSuse 10.1 with KDE 3.5.6 (official Suse binaries from KDE3 repo). What is the name of the produced binary and where is the place it should be copied to? I'll have a look if it's on the right place if I know the name. Maybe I messed something up with --prefix.
Thanks for your help!

very very strange. here itams with no icons are displayed with the standard empty document icon but are displayed, i can't figure out what the problem could be

I did a little digging and the problem is that if the menu command resides under /~ and if there is no icon the menue item does not display in TastyMenu (as it does in Kmenu). If I add an appropriate icon then TastyMenu will display it.

Fyi - I store non-compiled apps like java or kommander scrips in my home folder.

even more strange when i create a menu entry without an icon neither tasty menu or classical kmenu shows up.
even if i reopen kmenuedit the new created entry doesn't show up.
Instead if the entry is not created with kmenuedit but if the desktiop file is created by hand and put in ~/.local/share/applications, it shows correctly with mime-empty as an icon.
At this point i suspect it's kmenuedit that messes badly with the file ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu (seems to put the apps without an icon in the <Exclude> section).
If i'm right i fear i can't do much to fix it :(

see that's not the behavior I was seeing and wierder yet now when I create a menu item with no icon that points an executable in my home it's showing in both the K and Tasty menus.

Quick request - when you green a new menu item and all menus are collapsed by default can you highlight the submenu folders also so they're easier to find. If I add an new app. and just use the run command to execute it the green seems to never go away. Or make this optional.

thanks, it's looking/working better every update

I really like the menu and just created a german translation for it, which I've mailed you. Perhaps you would like to include it in a release like 0.8.1?

I installed an application which places itself in the Games->Arcarde menu, however before I installed this application I did not have an Arcade subfolder.

While tasty menu recognized that a new menu item was installed, it did not show the item. The new Arcade subfolder and application show up fine in the normal KMenu.

If I restart tasty menu, the new subfolder and application will show up normally.

I'm not sure if this is related, but subfolders that only have one application in them do not show the subfolder name.

ah just noticed 0.8 released with a config option for showing submenu's with 1 item. Was the backtrace any help. I can probably install more debuginfo packages for KDE if you need more info. I'm not sure how to attach to tastymenu with gdb for more details.

This is the best menu for KDE to my humble opinion.

Four things that could improve the menu...
- Optional transparency
- The menu becomes visible when logging out, even when the menu is not opened. No big deal, it just looks a bit sloppy.
- An option to configure what shortcut menu (most left panel) is shown when opening the menu. Favorites for instance.
- Resize the menu by dragging.

We had a patch to add libkio in makefile.am, however if I ran autoreconf on the sources it would no longer make some .h files and build. I'm not sure why this was the case.

libtool brings in a libm and libgcc_s library and apparently these are never used or are needed. someone suggested that it is possible to specify the libraries it needs so that libtool doesnt need to guess, but I do not know how to do this.

There is a guideline that says something installed in /usr/lib needs to be of the form lib<libname>.so.<major> or lib<libname>-<major>.so Is there any chance you can rename the library in this format?

We also include a debug package which includes the source files, and there was a lint complaint about misc.cpp having its execute permission set.

There is also a rpath problem with 64bit architectures, but I suspect this is an autotools problem.

Oh, this also reminds me. On 64bit platforms I get a crash when I try to configure tastymenu. I will try and supply a backtrace for you.

While I was working on creating a .spec file for Fedora Core, I and my package reviewers ran into a series of odd problems, which appear to be from TastyMenu's own makefiles. I'll link you to the info:
