Description:

Crystal is a kwin window decoration theme, which offers you (pseudo) TRANSPARENT titlebar, buttons and borders. Check out my screenshots! It also has some little usuability enhancements.

Main features:
* The style grabs your wallpaper and uses it as the deco background. It has several blending modes, i.e. it can fade the background into the defined title bar color, or it can brighten or darken the wallpaper, as well as blur the source image to simulate glass.
* Choose the blending color of the buttons.
* You can define the title bar height and border size of the windows.
* Right click on minimize button toggles shade mode.
* Middle click on minimize button sends window to below.
* Double click on program symbol closes window.
* Support for button themes. Basic button theme is included, feel free to swamp me with cool themes.
* Can show a tooltip of the caption
* Mouse-wheel on the title bar to 'scroll' to all opened windows of the same desktop.
* If kdocker is installed (http://kdocker.sf.net), right click on close button will send the window to the systemtray.

Disadvantages:
- Crystal needs KDE >=3.2 and QT>=3.2.
- May be very slow and memory consuming
- Don't forget to breathe, while drooling.

-- INSTALL ---------------------
Basic Installation (from the console):
- Step 1
$ ./configure
OR: $ ./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`
- Step 2
$ make
- Step 3 (as root)
# make install

If you installed crystal while it was running, you need to restart kwin to use the updated version: kwin --replace
--------------------------------

Crystal in common distributions:
- Kubuntu: Crystal is the default decoration since 6.06
- Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install kwin-style-crystal
- Gentoo: emerge -a x11-themes/crystal
- Fedora: yum install crystal
- Debian: apt-get install kwin-style-crystal
- openSUSE: install from repository http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_10.2
- FreeBSD: Port x11-themes/kde-windeco-crystal
- Mandriva: urpmi kwin-style-crystal

Hi there!

I really like that decoration, there's just one tiny thing:

in the 3rd screenshot up there, the buttons are "in the middle" of the window border (like in vista-final). I wasn't able to get this effect with the newest version on my debian box. My Minimize / Maximize / Close - Buttons "touch" the upper border of the window border (like in the beta-vista).

Any suggestions? What option did I miss?

thanks in advance.

Well, it's not the vista button theme but one of the Kubuntu themes (in this case Feisty).

I'm having an issue with the Crystal faux transparency not refreshing on Beryl. It works fine at first, but when I move a window it doesn't refresh the titlebar/border background until the window loses focus.

Does anyone else have this issue? I've tried turning on/off every Crystal and Beryl feature I can think of and the problem still persists.

I love this decoration :)

"Moving repaints window" is set to "immediately", right? And you are using aquamarine, right? Maybe aquarmarine does not inform crystal about the moving window. Crystal wouldn't be able to render the false transparency right anyway, when the window is transformed. Why not disabling transparency in crystal completely and make beryl do the job?

Report

krushia

Yes and yes. It does seem like Aquamarine isn't telling crystal that the window has been moved, but I don't know the specifics of the programming so I wanted to see what others thought.

As for disabling Crystal's transparency and using Beryl... that's not an option :( When beryl does window decoration transparency it 1) Shows everything behind the window, not just the desktop like Crystal and 2) also makes the window title text and buttons transparent, so you can't see them at all.

Besides the little bug with Crystal not refreshing when moving, I don't see any problems with it on Beryl... the faux transparency renders fine after it refreshes.

(sorry for the delay)

Well, then selectin crystal to refresh every 50ms when moving. This should work even when aquamarine does not tell crystal that the window has moved.

If the window is transformed, bend, whatever, crystal can't compute correct faux transparency, because the window is stretched. What position does the window have then? Crystal assumes of course that the window is perfectly rectangular, has a position width and height. It wouldn't look that good.

After installing QT3 and the libraries that Konsole requested, I am still getting an error message. When I run the 'make' command, I get an error message that reads:

make: *** [all] Error 2

and when I run the 'make install'

command, I get a similar error message that reads:

make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

I am an admitted noob, but is there an easier way to install these window decoration themes that I am missing? So far, my linux experience has been brilliant. I am really loving it, but the difficulty of simple installations is eluding me. Please help!

Nevermind. Since I typically run KDE but have Ubuntu (GNOME) installed as an alternate log in, I booted into GNOME, ran the 'sudo apt-get' terminal command, to download and install CRYSTAL, then re-booted into KDE and was able to select it as my window decoration. This WinDec is soooooo beautiful. Kudos and many thanks.

Here is your error:
crystalclient.h:31:25: error: kdecoration.h: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
crystalclient.h:32:32: error: kdecorationfactory.h: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

Install the kde devel package (don't know the name) that containes those two header files.

Is there a piece of code I can cut and paste into other window decorations, so they may all have the ability to use kdocker on RMB minimize?

If yes, could you please tell me where it is,

thanks.

It needs some more work to make other decos aware about right clicking on the close button.
For running kdocker see file crystalclient.cc:
- Method ClientWindows
- Method closeButtonPressed
{
Window frame,wrapper,client;
char param[20];
ClientWindows(&frame,&wrapper,&client);
KProcess *proc = new KProcess;
*proc << "kdocker";
sprintf(param,"0x%lx",client);
*proc << "-d" << "-w" << param;
proc->start(KProcess::DontCare);
}

Thanks for this windeco, my default one from a few weeks ago :)

I've installed 1.0.3 from sources on Debian testing and I can't see Feisty buttons; instead of them crystal default appear :?
On the other hand, previsualization shows Feisty buttons right.

You probably had an old version installed. Once you log out and in again (or run kwin --replace), the new buttons should be available. Otherwise kwin uses the cached version of the module.

So the issue is probably fixed by now...

I have a problem with it. It won't load, at least that's what kcontrol says. I have no idea where to start for a solution for this one.

Report

If the plugin is listed in kcontrol but can't load, it's probably that the precompiled binary does not match the libraries on your system. Which distribution do you use? Compiling the source would probably work, but is a lot harder.
Or you can start kcontrol from konsole, then you should see a message, what's missing. Maybe you need to install a libcompat package.

Report

cRoMo

I _am_ compiling it from the sources. Using the archlinux distribution. What is worse, I tried to go back to 1.0.2, that used to compile and work fine, but now it has the same problem as 1.0.3 does.
And kcontrol says nothing at all.

I can't believe I've overlooked this theme for so long. By FAR the most attractive window decoration my desktop has ever acquired. So many tweaks, and they're all stylish. Damn good stuff.
