Description:

Mostly-configurable Mac-like (see screenshots) drop-in replacement for KSplash. Notice that this is a seperate software package which physically replaces your ksplash binary. Not for the weak-of-heart. This _should_ work with KDE 2.1 and greater, but who knows for sure. Includes a KCM module to help you configure it (each user can set it up differently). (This is REALLY early stuff. My apologies for it being so crude... I'll be sure to post updates as I make it work better.) Simple to configure and install. Very configurable (though more improvement is needed).

I think that this release will be more stable than the previous release - that is, I've corrected the issues that have been pointed out to me (THANKS, Zaufi!! :). If you still see problems, please feel free to e-mail me and let me know, so I can fix them.

(Remember: It works fine for me. Your mileage MAY vary, but if you let me know, I'll try and fix it for ya! ;)

I like the ability to alter the start-up splash in the control center, but why not put it under System/Login manager where it's expected to be?

Next, I think we need a whole new category, called "themes" or, better "look & feel" in the control center for all the stuff that can be changed :-)

you add another function for the KDM as the KSplash/ML for the splash KDE? I mean, a theme manager for KDM.it will be cool! :-)

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you like KSplash/ML. Perhaps I will add a feature to allow users to disable the icons at the bottom, if they don't wish to see them. I will look into it, in the least. I've been looking at KDM, and I think it'd be much easier to customize now that it's been split out into different parts. I'm actually currently hacking around with kdm_greet to see if I can at least get it to use KDE widget styles instead of just Qt styles (even though this is already fixed in Qt3/KDE3.. :)

I think that this should definitely replace the ksplash included with KDE. This is (IMHO) much nicer and gives the user a much better first experience. Of course, it needs to be easy on network connections (remote X11/vnc sessions), but that can be worked out, I think.

I will see about creating RedHat packages for this. Another idea: How about a replacement for kdm that gives it a more unique look. Have a look at the login screens for Windows XP (I know, I know; but it IS a good example)... I would LOVE to see someone make a kdm replacement that has that type of look to it!

I will probably not request to have this added to the core KDE package. My last encounter with the core developers was over KCAD.kss, which they didn't seem to like enough to incorporate. Others are welcome to influence their decisions, of course! ;)

are you going to ask the core KDE developers to include your fantastic theme into KDE CVS? all of us will be so happy :-)). Another thing .. why dont you add some .rpm and .deb package ? I cant compile it for RedHat 7.1 :-(

The dcopidl problems you're having are probably related to automake generally sucking. I don't have a quick fix for ya. If anyone has suggestions on how to fix this, I'm wide open. :) -dT-

The make process evidently calls explicitly for dcopidl and dcopidl2cpp in /usr/local/bin. As those are installed in /usr/bin on my system (debian), it causes an error. I worked around it by making symlinks, but you might want to fix this in future releases.

[KDE3] I won't be able to put this into KDE3 unless the Kore developers (of which I am not one) decide they like it. I'd like to, of course! :)
[Background] Hmmm, KSplash/ML doesn't set a background of its own - It uses whatever KDM sets. You might try fiddling with your KDM settings and see if that helps. :)

dont you add this module into Kcontrol KDE 3.x CVS ? and if it was posible, making it more standar for the developers to build more splash screens.

I use a hacked-up copy of Liquid 0.5.1 (I didn't like the way the menu bars were rendered. ;)

I would like to know that KDE theme are you using in the third screenshot. I think you are using Liquid, but Liquid with what theme ? thanks. and congratulations about your splash theme! :-)

Forgot to mention the new feature: Users have the ability to select arbitrary splash screen images. No need to know which folder to place them in, just load the KCM module and pick what you want! :)
