Description:

What's all this?
- Debian Woody
- X.org (next to XFree86 - no need to recompile KDE, to use it)
- KDE 3.3.1
- xcompmgr and transset
- Baghira (kde-look.org)
- OS-L icons
- bit of SuperKaramba

If you like a stable environment, don't go anywhere near baghira nor xcompmgr/transset. You also need quite a lot of spare CPU cycles to pull this off. I hope that KDE will adopt stable and efficient window transparency at some point in the future.

From my pov there is too much transparency. It destroys the overall look and readability.

Why don't you use font antialiasing for the desktop icons?
Ziggy Zaggy fonts look terrible. They make your screenshot look like something from the past not the future.

I agree with you that in general, transparency does not improve on readablity. Actually, I would never use transparency on ALL windows, but I can imagine some situations in which it would make sense to have some windows transparent.

I fixed my icons, but it does not make much difference on an LCD, unless I really increase their size.

Sorry.I didn't know that this screenshot is from a notebook.
Did you try some of the settings from Kcontrolcenter ?

Look 'n Feel->Fonts->Subpixel hinting
and then any of the options.

Yes, but it doesn't really show any difference (at least not for my desktop icons). I think it has to do with the fact that I am using an absurdly high resolution.

Working with different transparence settings actually shows nicer results. I'm using 95% on active windows, 80% on inactive ones and 50% on miving windows.

In this way I can always 'see' hidden windows, but readability is just fine on the active window. Of course if you stack a lot of inactive windows, readability for those is plain gone.
