If your graphics card is accelereated, you might be able to get better fonts if you enable anti-aliasing, apply the Xft-slighthint hack, and get some good TrueType fonts. The Xft-slighthint hack greatly improves AAing, removing a lot of the headache-inducuing fuziness that doesn't allow your eyes to focus.

For Mandrake, grab the RH "webfonts-noarch" rpm from rpmfind.net, which gives you things like Verdana, Arial, etc.
