Why do I need Windows???

Description:

It's Mandrake 8.2 with KDE 3.0 using Keramik style + Crystal icons.

I don't want to show here just a screenshot, but the question why the hell one would need Windows for!!!
Okey, sometimes still a little buggy (I mean Wine then) but enough for me to do my job, and avoid Windows at the same time!

Oh yes, about the RENODesk style, after playing around for some weeks now with kde3 I'll start now developing a KDE3 version soon. I'll keep you posted!

I was just adding a little tip...
on your screenshot i noticed that your system icon (left most titlebar icon) has a little garbage left over from when your resized the window...i have no idea why this happens...something to do with the icon not being refreshed after the resize black border overlaps it...but for a quick fix...just go into KCONTROL and tell it to show window contents while resizing and moving...that will force a redraw...hope that helps you...even a little ;-P and i hope it will be fixed by the KDE team in later versions.

You can easily convert StarOffice fules to MS OFFICE file formats and vice-versa. This is not a problem. ALso most companies don't even use their software to it's full potential and I'm sure if you really gave STarOffice a chance you would realize it is very very powerful. There are even some 1,000+ page books about StarOffice 5.2. ST6 will probably have even alrger books documenting all of it's features.

Don't you thing they should be putting more effort in developing quality software for Linux rather thatn trying to support windows apps? With Wine, Crossover and stuff like that, Linux is never going to make it to the full. Besides, it disgusts me running win software on Linux...

Sure they could put more effort into mking more linux software and forget about compatability, hwever the proprietary game makers are gonna go for the markets with the highest promise for profit, and that is Winblows by far. and until linux can become as prominant in consumer desktops as win then i just dont see it happening any time soon. Not to take you down any but you seem a bit naieve if you think the software devopers will just thow there time and funds into a operating system where people are accustomed to open source/ free software. Oh well maybe im wrong, but i do applaud those devoted to breaking the divide between windows and linux.

I would agree with you if I only used Linux at home in my freetime and act a little like a Linux freak.
But some of us do business! In my company we use almost only Linux but not our customers. We write Intranet and Extranet Applications, and most of them are completely written for M$ environments, like IIS, SQL Server, IE browsers etc.
I need to be able to test those apps, even on my Linux, and I just can't do that without M$ software!
As well the communication between us and the customers is based on Word documents and Excel sheets, sometimes with Macros etc. Try that to do with SO! Forget it!
So how much you disgust it, when doing business you just need M$ apps!

In that case your company is not very well organised if it doesn't provide appropriate means for efficient companycustomer interaction. Why don't they have some Win boxes for testing and commnunicating w/ the customers, and have Linux for development. You also have to agree that it's not only businesses that use CrossOver and alike, to say the least. Most of software like this is probably used at home. And in the unlikely even that SO or OO can't do the job, I'll go back to my original question - Why not put the same effort making Linux software work better - not Windows.

You know, this just pisses me off!
People like you, and there a lot in the Linux community, are actually the reason why there is still no or little breakthrough of linux on the desktop market!
What I wanted to show here, was that it is possible to run on linux, but still use applications such as MS Office etc. No matter if it is for business or personal usage!
Most people don't know that. They see Linux as a tropical OS not able to communicate with other OS'es. I want to show them it can, not only just communicate but also run apps from other OS'es.
Something on the side: I also prefer OpenOffice and KWord and so on above MS Office, but docs with VBA Macros etc. is another issue!

And when do we see wine apps using kde themes. Office and IE could look better with Mosfet's Liquid :)

Heh, no. I love galeon because of it's great mouse gestures. Opera is bad because of ads and Konqueror doesn't handle mouse gestures at all.

I don't like IE, but I would like to use Office and Quicktime Player.

StarOffice 6.0 is fantastic. My dad has a pre-releae version and it's great. It installs very easily on Linux (just like a windows program) and I can do everything I did in word with it. I was able to read all Microsoft Office files without error too. One of my favorite features in StarOffice 6.0 is being able to save files in MS format. All office suites are dramatically improving and soon there will be a point when it is all a matter of choice, because they will be equally strong.

As for browsers I think Mozilla 1.0 is still better than KOnqueror. However Konqueror is completely themeble and looks better. PLus you can easily go to filemanager mode. Opera 6 is also looking pretty good.

Let's see Galeon, Mozilla or Opera blow IE out the water and StarOffice 6.0 from what I have heard of is moving it's way towards elimanting the use of M$ Office. Only thing I need from winblow$ is QT and that's because Apple want's to be a bitch about not making a Linux port of this application. So I don't think there is any need for M$ in Linux at all.

Actually Konqueror is the best. Nothing else is as fast or looks as nice. Fonts in Galeon and Mozilla look like crap.

Nope, i don't agree with you about fonts in Galeon (at least). I am using Galeon 1.2.0 with mozilla 0.9.9 and boy, I haven't looked back at konqueror (yet!). Do you know if you have evolution and gtm (gnome transfer manager) installed, your entire web experience can be integrated into these 3 programs? Try it, you just might think again.
KDE, btw, is great for overall eye-candy friendly desktop, but I must say GNOME apps are superior!

Some of us still need Word - SO6 and OO import filters are good, but sometimes they still screw things up when going back and forth from Word to SO6/OO.

I don't know how many times I've cursed when I written a paper for class in SO, taken it to the computer lab to print it out, only to discover that my careful formatting is screwed up. Often times it's worse than that. I can't live like that, I need to be able to take it from one computer to another without having to repair the formatting and whatnot every single time.

Too many people send Word documents around, and simply telling them to use rtf isn't gonna make them change. (You also loose formatting when you use rtf).

As for the browsers, I agree.

When you use Codeweavers Plugin, it installs QuickTime by default. So I didn't really get it from somewhere...

well i got it and installed it user mode but it's still very buggy or at least here. I mean it crashes and after i open it and click on open moviein new player and i open a movie sometimes it freeezes, ohther times i just have to wait a long time. Plus the quality and speed are much poorer. I am saying this because there could be smth wrong here in my computer.. Even i agree to the person that said if there would be games there wouldn't be a windows on my machine ( damn Apple btw )

Yes, since Konq is able to run Netscape plugins, it is no problem.

I've tested Wine itself and then tried and buyed CrossOver and yes, it's much better!
It installed smoothly, even Office installed smoothly!
Guess what, I don't have a Windows partition, I installed Office 2000 from CD's and for Internet Eplorer I downloaded the installer for IE5.5 from Microsoft and did the install. As easy as that!
The 50$ you pay is GOOD investment! I had some questions, posted them to their mailinglist, and not even 5 minutes later I had my answer from one of their developers!
