Description:

This is a small applet designed for the panel to have quick access to the most used folders.

Hints for the Drag and Drop support:
you can open the dialog by hovering for 1 sec over the applet. The same way you can navigate through the directory tree, simply stay 1 sec over a folder/the backarrow to get into the folder...
If you drop a file/folder it will land in the folder you are in, no matter if you dropped it on a foldericon or not...

If you see any bugs or think something is a design failure please inform me about it.

I have to thank Luciano Leveroni and Marcel Nowaczyk for their help, suggestions and testing, without them you would have a lot of bugs in the released version...

It's much better now :)
The new render way is cool and shiny. Better than the old one.
The only problem someone could have is that translucent themes can make text items unreadable, but it's ok for me with Glaze theme.

I uploaded a new version, but with the old method to render the items, because it is used systemwide and has more possibilities...but at least it uses less space ;)

The new (0.5.1) version works really great. The last ones did as well...a few comments though.

1. For some reason, one of my running plasmoids ended up getting a scrollbar when one wasn't needed before.
2. The upgrade for some reason turned off the custom labels.
3. I'm not so sure it's a good idea to have popup-tips enabled by default...it became very annoying very quickly.
4. As far as the non-readable using glassified...well, it's readable for me although could be better (OpenSuse 11, KDE 4.1 beta2+some additional svn commits)

I use a new class to render the items in the itemview, because I thought it would look better, but I am not sure if I should keep it or switch back to the one used in dolphin etc. This one seems to use too much space and also affects the not readable text in the glassified theme...

Yes I expected this one because I changed the way the settings are handled and this solution was the best...

You are right, I have disabled them...

That will get better... But I still don't know if I should keep the new way to render the items or stick to the default kde style...

Hi again!

I like your visual changes even if i use my Glassified theme. It's readable but it could be better. But you wrote that it will. And that's ok.

But there is a theme-independent-problem with long names, which lay under the right arrow. Is this a plug-in bug or can you fix that?

Thank You!

uhhh I totally forgot about that bug.. I will fix it as soon as is got some time...
For 0.5 I don't use the KDE Delegate(the part of the list which renders the items), I have written an own to have a better integration into the Plasmathemes but its not yet ready, that also concerns the shadow under text. and I am still not sure if I shall keep it...
There is a new function in Plasma that makes it possible to draw a shadowed text, that would improve the visibility of the text, but I have to wait for the RC1 and that opensuse has packages for it that I can test it....

thanks for the report...

Hi and thank you for this update!

I would like to come back to a suggestion i gave you some days ago: Showing as symbols like in Dolphin or folderview.
To give you an impression of what i'm thinking of, i've done a mockup for that, which you can find here:

http://www.wochenendkommune.de/kde-look/quickaccess_mockup.png

Thank you again for this great plasmoid!

ahhhh now I got what you meant :D
I was curious how you wanted to use only Icons...
Hmmm, it should be possible, but how would you make it possible to navigate through the folders especially how to go back into the parent folder or should a click only open the folder in dolphin/konqueror, without being able to navigate through the folders?

Report

painkiller101

Ok, i think there are 3 possibilities:

1. Using a back-arrow to navigate:

http://www.wochenendkommune.de/kde-look/quickaccess_mockup2.png

2. Using it like your listview:

http://www.wochenendkommune.de/kde-look/quickaccess_mockup3.png

or 3. Rudimentarily like in folderview by just opening Dolphin/Konqueror.

I really don't know if these possibilities can be implemented, but these are just my ideas.

Thank you!

Report

I think all three possibilities can be implemented, I am also thinking about dropping the flopscrollview and have an animation that works good with the listview and the icon view... Perhaps let the clicked folder grow and fade into the new folder...

The possibility to navigate can be implemented configurable, to be able to decide if you want to directly open a folder in dolphin/konqueror or enter the folder...

If you don't mind I would send you a first version when I have implemented it to get some feedback, it seems you have a better eye for that ;)

great plasmoid ! thanks

two ideas :

how about a feature of sorting ? specially being able to sort it by date ?

also , how about supporting more than one folder (the same plasmoid having more than one start icon)? if you use it on the panel, you can just use alot of quick access plasmoids, but if you use it on the desktop its very hard to keep alot of quick access plasmoids aligned.

sorting should be possible, I just have to look where to put the Button for that...

I don't know if I should put effort in that because there where some plans to give plasma the feature to be able to align applets in a grid, beside that quickaccess is already very bloated ;)

This has taken up permanent residence on my desktop.

Please consider getting this into playground in the KDE svn. It would be great if this could be included in the kdeplasmoids module for 4.2.

Nice to hear that you can use it :)

I have no svn account to move it into playground, and I am not somebody who can decide about that, but if the KDE developers want to have it in the kdeplasmoids module I would be the last who rejects it...

The plasmoid is great is it is, although here is an idea:

Right now it is limited to providing quick access to specific folder (i.e. ~/texts/documentation/kde). It works great for that but how about this...

In KDE3 there was a specific applet (can't remember the name of it) designed to provide quick access to a specific part of the K-menu (i.e. Games/Arcade, or System). It seems to me that this plasmoid should relatively easily be changed (or forked if two different ones would seem to be a better option) to allow that flexibility.

I for one would love to be able to set up a quick access plasmoid to show the contents of the "System" submenu of the K-menu!

I have planed to support this with the "applications:/" kio_slave but don't try it at the moment, it will crash QuickAccess(plasma)... I have to figure out why... Beside that the "applications:/" kio_slave doesn't work, at least for me there are categories but no entries for the apps...

This is exactly what I was yet missing in kde-4!

I've noticed that when I enable previews, it also shows previews for *.desktop files instead of their associated icons, it should better keep those. :)
