Tux Cursor!

Description:

Now this cursor alone is a reason to install linux! ;)

featuring: Tux

why should i install this?

1. a wonderful drawn tux will take over your old boring x-cursors.

2. the main cursor is animated. (right arm and the legs, you have to see it to believe how cute it is)

3. animated xkill cursor (red eyes go crazy, perfect for killing those nasty processes)

4. animated resize cursors (tux is pushing and hanging on the edge)

5. lots of other cool cursors.

6. it took me a week of hard work, so dont ask, install!

how do i install?

good question... i tried to make it as easy as possible.

1. vote this cursor as "good", hehe

2. extract the downloaded file with karchiver (or the extracter of your choice)

3. now you got 2 folders. default and tuxcursor.

4. copy them as root (type "su" in console) in this directory: /usr/lib/X11/icons/

5. if a warning asks you to overwrite index.theme, overwrite it!

6. now there must be a folder named tuxcursor in the /usr/lib/X11/icons/ directory and a folder named /default which contains the index.theme

7. check if the index.theme contains this line: inherits=tuxcursor

8. now restart X11 with ctrl+alt+backspace

if all went well you will have a wonderfull tux cursor.
if not, follow the above points step by step or ask your
sysadmin of choice ; )

its quite big ( 64x64 ) but i wanted maximum detail.
you can resize by typing:

export XCURSOR_THEME="tuxcursor"
export XCURSOR_SIZE=32

before you start X.

i hope you all enjoy the cursor i made, as much as i do.
its a tribute to the great linux & kde-look community.
please dont bash me if you dont like the cursor.
if you dont like it, dont install it.
i tried to make the previews as informative as possible.
so you can see if you can life with a tuxcursor.

credits go to:
uga for making the start and the howto
the guys who helped him
the xfree86 team for making xcursorgen
all the guys from which i stole the ideas ; )
tux as main actor

*additional info*

you will have to upgrade Xfree86 to version 4.3. to get the cursors to work!

get it from:
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.3.0/
or search your distribution site for rpms.

i used rpms for suse 8.1 from:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/XFree86-4.3.0-SuSE

thanks to bruce and markus for mentioning the missing info.

im very happy that you like the cursor : )

I had a look at the XFree 4.3 source, and the way they create the resizeable cursors is like this:
- for each cursor create five different pictures,
in five different sizes.
- then create a config file like this:
12 1 1 left_ptr-16.png
16 2 2 left_ptr-24.png
24 3 3 left_ptr-32.png
32 4 4 left_ptr-48.png
48 6 6 left_ptr-64.png

Hope this helps ;)

well.
i put the lines into .Xdefault, but i cannot see any result.
Xcursor.size: 32 only seems to resize the text-mark icon (e.g. in a terminal), but Tux just doesn't get any smaller.
What's wrong ?

i finally found an easy and comfortable way
of setting the size.

create an '.Xdefaults' file in your home directory and add the following lines:

-------
Xcursor.size: 32
Xcursor.theme: tuxcursor
-------

restart X.
now the tuxcursor should be 50 % smaller.
if you want it even smaller type 16 as size.

i hope that works for you.

Unfortunately this didnt work for me. Im running SuSE 8.1. Anyone else running SuSE and was able to resize the cursors? By the way these cursors are awesome. Just a little big.

Anyone know if there are any rpm's available for Redhat 8.0 for xfree 4.3.0. I know there are rawhide rpm's floating around, but apparently these don't work on Redhat8.0. Anyone know?

I have been looking for a reason to 'emerge -u xfree' for a while, I never thought it would be for some cursors. Well Done!

Because I can't get any work done. :-) It makes you want to kill processes just to see that funny tux. Or you resize windows all the times because it's just so cute.
Excellent work !!!

Don't really have any better words to describe my feelings onseeing this.
Only one thing, and i guess its probably only me, but tux(the face atleast looks more like a raven than a penguin in this. Not that i have anything against ravens, but could u make tux a bit more chubbier faced more like the orignal tux ??

Thanks a million for making the best cursor set in the history of WIMP (windows icons mouse pointers that is) atleast according to me

btw: its version 0.1 on deskmod not 1.0.

i will upload version 0.2 soon
so stay tuned.
added drop shadows and fixed some
pixels in the images (fine tuning)

thanks to all for your comments.
this community rocks!
and i dont care about the %.
92% is pretty good :)

i will upload the sources if i get
a good connection again. so you can put anything in tux hand as pointer.

lol, altough I don't think it should be the default XFree cursor like mentioned above, it does deserve to have a place along with redglass and whiteglass because this theme is simply hilarious! :)

Awesome job!

If you want the passwords and account names send an email to ronin77 at linux.nu and i will mail it back to you.
For some strange reason i cant upload to freshmeat so i will leave that to someone else.

Hell, this cursor set should be the default with Xfree 4.3.1. Lets start a petition motioning this :)

i will defenetly do a next version.
but not in the next days.

just post your ideas and improvements and i will try to put them alltogether in the 0.2 version.

dropshadows should not be a problem but doing this on 60 images takes some time. i will also have to resize the cursor to make some space for the shadow.

lets find all errors first and then i will see what i can do. ok?

uploading this theme on different
theme sites is a little problem for me. because i only have internet acces on my work and cant upload there.
i uploaded to kde-look with my cellphone, but thats quite expensive ; )

but you can post the cursor for me on any site you want, as long as you give credit to me and include the description above.

I think you should release this over at

http://themes.freshmeat.net/
http://www.themedepot.org/
and
http://deskmod.com/

So more people can use this cursor to.
