Cantata

Please use https://code.google.com/p/cantata/ for bug reports/feature requests.

1. Easy enough to do, and I suppose this makes sense :-)

2. You have asked for this before, and the response still stands. Until you can *query* for tracks by rating, last-played, or last-modified then this is a no go. The dynmic mode is a separate helper script - and this would need to be abe to query mpd - e.g. to find tracks by Abba with a rating>=3.5 'find artist "Abba" rating-gt 3.5' AFAIK, this is not supported.

3. I'll think about this, but I'm not convinced of its usefulness. Why not just place the playqueue in the sidebar?

4. You can already change the search terms - right click on the lyrics view, and select "Search" - Nov 10 2013

First of all, Cantata does not use libmpdclient - so these are not directly applicable.

However, not sure what use these are goint to be. What is Cantata going to use last-modified for?

Until you can search using these fields, I dont see the usefulness. - Nov 10 2013

Ideally Cantata prefers afrtist.png/artist.jpg - but the way covers are searched for is detailed in the README.

When you say its not shown in the contet view - do you mean the context view background, or in the artist column? The artist column will use the same mechanism to get the image as the artist page - so this should (and for me does) work.

For the context view background, this image is not used - backgrounds are retreived from fanart.tv, or discogs if this fails - this is because these provide larger, wide-screen images. If both of these fail, Cantata should create a backdrop from the album covers. - Nov 10 2013

You nee dto shrink the left hand side. If it becomes to small, Cantata places the three parts (artist, album, song) into 1 controlled by a combo. - Nov 08 2013

LIBMTP_FILETYPE_FOLDER is defined in libmtp.h

Which version of libMTP do you have on your system? My is 1.1.5 - and has this defined.

The only solution I can see, is for you to disable MTP support. - Oct 09 2013

You can place the info-view in the sidebar. Then, if the sidebar is small, there will be a combo below allowing you to control the part that is shown (artist, album, or lyrics).

I see no point to just having lyrics in the non-sidebar context view. - Sep 29 2013

odd. Anyway, I'll fix the KDE compile issue later. The KDE version should work, as I 'borrowed' the code from Amarok. For the Qt-only side, I had to add more code - seing as it does not use KDE's solid. - Sep 03 2013

Do you want to run MPD in system-wide mode? ie. have your music collection shared between all users? IF so, do you have MPD configured, and running on your machine? The password entry refers to the password you have configured in MPD's settings.

Alternatively, you can have Cantata start, and control, a per-user instance of MPD. This will only be accessible to Cantata, and to the current user. For this to function, you must also ensure that MPD is installed. - Aug 17 2013

Which version are you using? There was a bug in versions prior to 1.0.3 where it would think the file was not writable.

Anyway, I'd suggest waiting for 1.1 - which I'll release probably next week. This has a *much* better interface for streams. - Aug 01 2013

Actually, if you tell cmake to create a Release build, then the executable is automatically stripped. e.g. when you call 'cmake' also pass:

Streams sidebar icon is not monochrome, but just gray scale. I could not find a coloured stream icon that worked with oxygen, gtk styles (e.g. ambiance), and on windows. If you can find one, then I will gladly use it. (it needs to be in svg format, or at least available in various sizes)

As to the menu button (other actions), this is coloured as per the font colour. I have no intention to change this, as I think it works fine with oxygen. its simple, and matches the chrome menu icon, and various menu icons on android. - May 11 2013

Audioplayers by CraigD 391 comments

1.1 will come with an entry in the s1debar context menu to switch monochrome icons off - but I'd already had 1.0 translated before adding the mono icons, so could not add to this release.

However, you can edit Cantata's config file (as detailed in the ChangeLog (item 99)), and this will turn off the monochrome icons the next time cantata is started. - May 10 2013

Audioplayers by CraigD 391 comments

If you select the '1' icon in the bottom right - this will enable MPDs single mode. Here only 1 track is played - either repatedly (if repeat is on)m or just the once. So, this will 'sort of' get what you want.

Not really sure how else to accomplish this. Perhaps filing a feature request with mpd? (actually there already is a bug report - http://bugs.musicpd.org/view.php?id=3126)

I'll give this some thought... - Mar 28 2013

Which version of Cantata is this? 0.9.2? KDE, or Qt?

Cantata has no menu bar, but in the top right there is a menu button. I've just compiled 0.9.2 for KDE, and Qt, and both versions have this menu button - which *does* have a quit option. - Mar 08 2013

I think this /might/ be technically feasible - but its not something I would use. It would be mixing playlists and the playqueue - which I think would be a bit confusing. i.e. if the user had an active playqueue, but then switched to a playlist (to play it) - the original playqueue would either have to be stored as a playlist (as what name?), or be 'lost'

Cantata does allow you to list the contents of playlists in its playlists page.

p.s. Sorry about the late reply - kde-apps would not let me log in until now! - Dec 09 2012

Cantata is developed on Kubuntu/Ubuntu. There is no need to modify your system - apart from installing some development packages.

Sorry, but I do not have the time to create packages for other systems. The windows build exists, as I thought it might be fun to try and port it to windows. However, even here no installer is provided. - Oct 15 2012

Cantata can definitely be reduced to well within those limits.

Right click on the sidebar, and reduce the number of entries (assuming you dont want all items - but even with all items, its only 540px for me). Also, try changing the sidebar style, or remove text labels. - Oct 01 2012

As stated above:

What I need to know is;
1. How to retrieve the tag via MPD
2. How to use the tag in searches

Until the above is answered, I cant do anything.

I have no issues with adding support for this - but it is not something I would personally use. Therefore, I'm not inclined to spend ages trying to find the answers to the above. Once they are answered, I'll happily implement the feature... - Sep 28 2012

And how do you configure MPD to look at the FMPS_Rating tag?

To use this tag in any meaningful way, it needs to be recognised by MPD. To use it in dynamic playlists I need to be able to ask mpd 'find Genre "Metal" FMPS_Rating "1"' So that it will find all Metal songs with a rating of 1. If MPD does not read and store the tag - then it is effectively useless.

I've just tried with URL: http://127.0.0.1:8000 You could also try http://127.0.0.1:8000/mpd.mp3 or http://127.0.0.1:8000/mpd.ogg

(You also need to toggle the stream button that appears next to the cantata volume button).

I had to change the phonon backend to VLC. Then it worked, but was a bit glitchy. (Even in VLC itself the stream was glitchy)

Also, note that there can be a slight delay (1 or 2 seconds) between pressing a control button and the output changing - probably due to MPD, or phonon, buffering. - Jul 10 2012

I'm happy to accept qt-translations - just not sure how they work! All strings are encapsulated with QObject::tr for Qt-builds.

Icon Tasks

Plasma 4 Extensions by CraigD 642 comments

I've not actually tried this, but use something similar for VirtualBox.

1. Edit taskmanagerrulesrc (either edit the system one (/usr/share/kde4/config/taskmanagerrulesrc), or copy the system one to ~/.kde/share/config). In the "[Settings]" section update "MatchCommandLineFirst" so that it contains "Firefox" (e.g. MatchCommandLineFirst=VirtualBox,Firefox)
2. Create a custom .desktop launcher for your firefox and make sure its Exec line mathces the commandline (e.g. "Exec=firefox -no-remote")
3. Restart plasma (not 100% if this is required...)

What should happen is that the taskmanager library will read taskmanagerrulesrc before matching a window to a .desktop file. It should see that for windows with a WM_CLASS set to "Firefox" that it should first attempt to match to a .desktop file containing the commandline used to start the app. Therefore, your custom .desktop should be found first. Note, that this .desktop file *needs* to be in one of the standard locations (i..e it should also appear in the KDE menu). The easiest way would be to use KMenuEdit to create the .dekstop file. - May 24 2012
