I would if I could but the codebase doesn't support it. If you look carefully you see that it's not only the one and then "*BANG*" the other. There are some tearing going on as well. Imagine that tearing constantly during animation...

With that said, it's not imposible I make some tests anyway when I get some time, but I suspect it will look much worse with animations than without. Let's hope I'm wrong. - Dec 13 2010

Thanks for pointing out the too long filenames thing, I will look that over.

Other than that, the changes are made mostly for looks but also to improve usability for touchpad users. It's easier to click open the recent menu and have it open than to navigate to the submenu and having it close if happen to move the mouse cursor diagonally.

Also notice that the recent menu is left open after you click on a filename so that you can open multiple recent or most used files more quickly.

Thanks for sharing opinions and giving improvement suggestions. - Dec 13 2010

Here it is: http://launchpad.net/dockbar/dockbarx/x.0.40/+download/dockbarx_0.40.tar.gz

But before you install it, could you check if you have any errors in ~/.xsession-errors that are connected to dockbarx?

If you find no errors it might be this old bug that's coming back to life (let's hope not!): http://launchpad.net/dockbar/dockbarx/x.0.40/+download/dockbarx_0.40.tar.gz
If that's the case, go to ~/.config/gnome-session and remove the folder "saved-session". - Dec 13 2010

If you mean the "live-ness" of the previews, you can't disable that. The previews work that way.

The problems you have isn't be cause of that previews are live, it's because Dockbarx doesn't close one preview before opening another and compiz can't handle overlapping previews ok. I've made a fix for that and it will be in the next version. - Dec 05 2010

That's how it is. There are no previews for minimized windows, unless you use compiz 0.9, which is said to support it, or if you use the kde's window manager kwin instead of compiz. - Nov 30 2010

I guess it should be quite easy to exclude windows that doesn't appear in window list from opacify. If that's preferable is another question, perhaps it should be only decoration-less windows that aren't in the windowlist that should be excluded? - Nov 27 2010

For now the popup area is always square. So there are empty spaces either at the sides or top and bottom always if the window isn't absolutely square. A redesign of the window list is quite high on the todo list now that 0.40 has been released.

Sound menu could be integrated either via panflute backend or via mpris, but I haven't look much into either so I don't know how to implement it yet. It's quite low priority right now.

I'm not really sure what you mean with integrating appmenu. I will look into dockmanager to see if I could use it to get similar "helpers" as docky and awn has. I will also look into adding indicators from the indicator applets to DockbarX. It should be possible since the indicators use a dbus-backend (it was not possible to do this with the normal notification area). Is it something like this you meant? The dockmanager integration is quite high priorityl - Nov 19 2010

I've been thinking about adding something like this from the beginning and there's been a few feature requests about it as well. It's not possible with notification area, as far as I know but it should be doable with ubuntu's application indicators, which can be accessed via gconf.

This is one of the features I want to introduce before dockbarx 0.50. Dockbarx 0.40 should be released quite soon and then I'll begin adding new features again. - Nov 10 2010

Except, next time you update via the ppa, the version will still be x.0.38.

The problem is that the files are installed in multiple places and the manually installed version is prioritized over the one installed from ppa. Do the manual install again with force and verbose flags, see where the files goes and delete them (I guess it should be /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/). that should remove the manually installed stuff. Then delete any Dockbarx files in /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages, that should be where the ppa used to install the files. The new files from ppa should be in /usr/pyshared, I think.

I know this is a mess. The install functions will probably be rewritten after version 0.40. - Oct 13 2010

Keep it civilized, please. Carbono hasn't even bothered to read the first question in FAQ before he wrote his misinformed opinion so it's not worth the energy to shout at him.

I've never understood what windows copied from KDE, so I think that argument is a bit weak, by the way. I think it's better to just state that every operating system is borrowing from other systems. Software development is about evolution far more than it's about revolution. And that's how it should be. Rebuilding the wheel isn't a goal in itself.

@everyone following this discussion
As the developer of dockbarx, I don't try to hide the fact that much inspiration comes from Windows superbar. There is quite a few good ideas behind it worth porting to Linux. On the other hand, the goal of DockbarX isn't to clone the superbar, but ultimately to make something even better. (Quite a few thing is already better on dockbarx, IMHO. Some exampels: you can scroll the mouse wheel to select windows, left click brings up all windows of a program and the zeitgeist integration will be worth more than jump lists when more programs gets support for zeitgeist.) - Oct 09 2010

Perhaps I should move the AWN install instructions so that they are above the ubuntu install instructions? If you've done the manual install you have a folder called AWN in the folder where you extracted the tar.gz file you downloaded. The content of that folder should then be copied to the folder /home/YOURNAME/.config/awn/applets. A folder starting with a dot is hidden press ctrl+h when browsing a folder in nautilus to see the hidden folders.

If you installed dockbarx from ppa, you can install dockbarx for awn by installing the package awn-applet-dockbarx. - Sep 14 2010

The delay and close by click is meant to be a feature, not a fix. But I think the delay has brought some extra stability too: Flickering where the pop-up disappeared and reappeared that existed in some situations isn't there anymore and that it's much less common that popups are left opened indefinitely now.

And I could finally add the code so that popups would be resized when a window is closed, without having to worry about that the pop-up would close because the mouse cursor would end up outside the resized pop-up (or worse the pop-up could perhaps not close at all until the mouse cursor reentered the pop-up).

Those are the reasons for the change. - Sep 13 2010

No, sorry, the setup.py actually installs them in /usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/[size]/apps. That's because the install script only specifies share/icons/hicolor/[size]/apps as the install path and dist-utils chooses what the correct place for the installation should be and that is apparently /usr/local/ and not /usr. - Aug 13 2010

What way did you install dockbarx for awn? Did you copy the files manually to ~/.config/awn/applets or did you install dockbarx for awn via the ppa as well?

If you did the later, perhaps you have installed it manually at some other time? You might then have to remove ~/.config/awn/applets/DockbarX.desktop and /awn/applets/DockbarX folder.

If you installed manually, did you do it again for x.0.39.7? - Aug 10 2010

Doesn't matter. I found the bug. I'll make a fix but for now to get around it, remove your launchers, one of them is broken. If you can't get dockbarx to start in gnome panel (can you or not? please tell me!) so that you can remove the launchers, you can remove them by removing the gconf key 'apps/dockbarx/launchers' with gconf-editor. - Jul 20 2010

You are not using x.0.39.6-1 because at line 946 in dockbar.py there's no "path = gb.desktop_entry.getFileName()" in that version. Check in the about dialog which version you are using (by adding dockbarx to gnome-panel since you can't start dockbarx in AWN). - Jul 20 2010

Oh, there seem to be no easy way to do that, DistUtils doesn't support it. Hadn't checked that before.

Ok, this is how you uninstall manually:
If you run "sudo ./setup.py install -v" it will tell you where it installs the file, in my case /usr/local/python2.6/distpackages/dockbarx/ so you could remove that directory.

Launguage files can be found at /usr/share/local/YOURLANGUAGEORCONTRYCODE/dockbarx.mo and dockbarx-themes.mo

Rest of the files can be left alone, since they will be overwritten when installing from ppa anyway. - Jul 19 2010
