Very sorry...

Well, I've no idea if it will work but you should try just changing the version number in the ui file with a text editor. IMHO, there should be much differences in between 3.3 and your version.

The opinion from an expert may prove me wrong but at least, it won't burn down your computer to try. ;-)

Just my 2 cents of the day. - Apr 14 2005

Come on! Just use the menu in the right frame. Haven't you seen the little arrow pointing down? Click on it and you'll see a list of all configurable widget colors. It's been there for as long as I can remember.

At the bottom of the list, you will find:

Frame of the active window
Handles of the active window
Frame of the inactive window
Handles of the inactive window
Alternative background for the lists

There are no place you can click to access directly these colors just like the other widgets. Not my fault...

We should send a wish to the KDE team in order that they change the "hidden" list into a more obvious list. ;-) - Apr 06 2005

You can't enable the outline border because it's always enabled.

If you have no frame around the windows, you are in big trouble! Something went definitively wrong during compilation. In fact, I don't think it's possible otherwise the whole windec shouldn't work at all. - Apr 05 2005

Well, you got your less rounded corners back and the 3 dots too. And everything is (almost) prepared for the (now definitively) distant future finale version with variable corners.

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by Maxilys 39 comments

Sorry but I feel that more rounded corners fit more with the round icons of the buttons. And in these corners, there isn't enough room for 3 dots. That's why I also introduce the "line style" handles. That's very nice with the "Flat Blue" colorscheme.

In a (distant) future version, I'll introduce configurable corners and maybe an alternative buttons' style. I intended to do it but I also have other works in the pipe. ;-)

Any way, you have the sources, so put your hands in the engine! ;-) It's easy. Edit 'malloryclient.cpp', find:

if (isResizable())

Look just below and you'll understand how to (almost) suit your wishes.

This is just the way I began writing Mallory: I did some "tuning"... without knowing much about C++... and I still don't! ;-)

Hmm... But maybe I can just add a checkbox for "Less rounded corners" that would trigger the 3 dots resize handles?

People will grow tired to see my windec on the front page every day... :-D - Apr 04 2005

That's something I'll fix in the next version. Hey, this is only my very first windec!

Any way, there shouldn't be "remains" of the title behind the buttons when you resize the window. On my config, the title just slides behind the buttons without problems.

Is there any unusual (de-)actived option in your control center? (I'm cautious now.) ;-) - Mar 29 2005

Just a guess... If no error is reported during the whole installation process but Mallory doesn't look like to be installed, it means that it got installed in the wrong place.

Where is located the KDE hierarchie on Debian? If it's not /opt/kde3 (like in a SuSE distro), I strongly suggest to do:

./configure --prefix=/path/to/kde

Then I also suggest to separate 'make' from 'make install' so that you get the time to do 'su' in between. The installation can't work like a charm if you aren't root. Check the output.

Apart from this, I've no idea about what can go wrong. - Mar 26 2005

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by Maxilys 39 comments

No problem, you can complain as long as you want if you say that you like my windec. ;-)

Well, yes. The external frame of the window is a gradient and its top color is the top color of the title bar gradient but much brighter. That's kinda hard coded. You're right, that should be configurable. (Next version, please!) ;-)

In the mean time, edit 'malloyclient.cpp' and find:

void MalloryClient::paintEvent(QPaintEvent*)

Everything is in it with a lot of comments. I called this "External borders". Look under "External top" and "External left and right".

To disable the gradient and use only the defined frame color:

------------------------
// External borders
if(maximizeMode() != MaximizeFull)
{
painter.setPen(cofrm);
painter.drawLine(2, 0, rightRect.right()-2, 0);
painter.drawPoint(1, 1);
painter.drawPoint(rightRect.right()-1, 1);
painter.drawLine(0, 2, 0, bottomRect.bottom()-2);
painter.drawPixmap(rightRect.right(), 2, rightRect.right(), bottomRect.bottom()-2);
painter.drawPoint(1, bottomRect.bottom()-1);
painter.drawPoint(rightRect.right()-1, bottomRect.bottom()-1);
painter.drawLine(2, bottomRect.bottom(), rightRect.right()-2, bottomRect.bottom());
}
else
...

Oh boy! Who created this stupid useless option? If you don't want to resize or move maximized windows, just don't do it! ;-)

I thought I found a way around then I played with the titlebar and buttons sizes... Oh boy! What a nightmare! Mallory doesn't like this option to be disabled.

Right now, my only advice is: Activate it! I have to dig a little more than I thought to find the bug but I will crush it! - Mar 19 2005

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by Maxilys 39 comments

This is driving me crazy. I tried very hard but I can't reproduce this bug. I set an unmaskable kicker on top of screen just like I saw on your snapshot but... no! Mallory can't do this. According to the calculations in sources, with the minimal sizes for both the buttons and the titlebar, because of the hardcoded limits, there is ALWAYS 1 pixel in between the buttons and the external border of the window.

Which KDE do you use? And did you compile Mallory from sources or just install the RPM?

I didn't build the RPM and I can't check it on my SuSE distro. Then the only thing I can think about right now is that the RPM builder did something to the sources. I'm turning into a paranoid! ;-) - Mar 18 2005

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by Maxilys 39 comments

I didn't notice the snapshot. Well, I repeat it: That's impossible!

From what I can see on the snapshot, your titlebar is defintively too small! And that's impossible. I hardcoded limits in order that buttons always fit and such a situation never arises. Apparently, you succeeded in crossing the line.

All I can propose you is to increase the size of the titlebar just a little. I can't think of anything else.

Puzzling... - Mar 18 2005
Mallory

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by Maxilys 39 comments

That's impossible! The buttons can't move because there's only one routine to set their position whatever the window is maximized or not. And allowing the resizing of maximized windows won't change this. That's the way my KDE is configured.

Maybe it's just an impression because the external border gets a new color when the window is maximized and you don't see it anymore... or else your QT is bugged.

I'm so surpized that I've got to say it again: That's impossible! Mallory just can't do this. - Mar 17 2005

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by Maxilys 39 comments

First, did you install the RPM or did you compile from sources? I didn't build the RPM myself and I even couldn't test it; I have a SuSE distro. If there're problems, I'll ask to builder to redo it.

And yes, the color and shadow of the buttons and text are linked together. That's part of the look.

Next, define "horrible"? If the resolution get too small, the buttons get pixellized and blurry but that can't happen in 1024x768. I don't know what else could happen to make them look "horrible". If everything look fine when the shadow is disabled, it will do the same with the shadow because the shadow isn't actually disabled. You can see it when the buttons are hover'd

The shadow can't be the same color as the text unless you define it so. Did you check with one of the provided color schemes? (They all have white text.) Or else, did you set the buttons color as mentionned in the README? No kwin deco I know use this color so I can be virtually anything and that's a problem for Mallory.

Now, I just realized that the RPM's builder didn't include the file 'AUTHORS'. Or you just didn't read it. Never mind. I started Mallory as a patch of Alloyon. I keep on mentionning the reference --because I liked it very much-- but the painting routines where mostly re-written from scratch. Apart from the skeleton and the config dialog, Alloyon and Mallory haven't much left in common. - Mar 14 2005

I can't change the top left icon; it's context dependant. The blue folder on the samples snapshot comes from Konqueror. I just removed its name.

As for the icons depending on the window decoration, they are actually drawings so that their colors can match the colors of the title. I'm working hard on a way to have anti-aliasing in such a tiny space. That would already improve them. If you have an idea for their design to put my window decoration in the top ten, just let me know. Your name will be in the authors' file. ;-) - Mar 09 2005

kdesu patch(mockup)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by jrch2k 18 comments

You have my vote. You should however think about adding an editfield to edit the command line or enter just a new one. We never use kdesu without a command line so having a way to edit it on the fly shouldn't be such a bad idea.

Eventually an history of the last kdesu'ed action would get us closer from perfection... ;-)

As for the image on the left, just make it switchable so the ones who don't like this feature can just switch it off. I think it's totally useless but it's also one of the things that makes this new kdesu so attractive. - Feb 10 2005

Well... I was too optimistic. Each package is around 230 Kb. I would have to do 4 packages. I don't think it's worth the trouble. Those who want to download can choose their color without having to also download the other ones. I think it's fine this way.

Besides, nobody else but you complains and I'm way too lazy to re-pack everything.

Align Desktop Icons

Dolphin Service Menus by mstolove 5 comments

I don't see much change. The icons are still so helplessly overly spaced. (I was expecting a remedy for this.)

IMHO, the grid alignment works quite well but the grid is way too large! And there's no need to report a bug for this; it's a well known problem since KDE 3.1 at least.

Maybe something will be done for KDE 3.4 or --more likely-- KDE 4.x.
