Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by nunogomez 27 comments

I would bet my salary that the GUI for the control center has very little influence on how successful KDE will be in the future. Not that it shouldn't be improved. Not at all, I'd love to see it improved. But there are things that are far more important to improve first. Off the top of my head, the simplicity/usability/some-other-fashionable-buzzword of Kicker, the Desktop and Konqi are what I'd say will dictate KDE's success in the future. This project could produce some nice innovations that will benefit KDE. But while their feature list includes subjective changes like "replace the word 'root' with 'administrator'", I'm not holding any hopes. - Jul 19 2005

> 1) they don't provide downloads for > distros except for those wanting to > use the likes of apt, etc. They > provide no link to the file itself > even though they take the time to > break it out by distro. Sad! Congratualations dickhead! You are totally wrong: http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/index.php/Download We spend time doing this for people like you even though you are ungrateful shits. Fortunately for you, despite your complete lack of intelligence, resourcefulness or gratitude, we will continue to package amaroK for distros we use, and link to all packages people tell us about. > 2) This program has always been > tremendously buggy. Yeah amaroK is buggy I agree, probably more so than other software. However amaroK is quite complicated and does develop fast, so this tends to lead to more bugs. I don't expect such a dumb-arse as yourself to understand this, but all software has bugs. Also, as a final comment, we are far less buggy than we used to be. > a) It is so bad that people have > addressed the bugs on their web site > and been lambasted by the admin on > that site. Bullshit. Provide links or go to hell for telling complete lies. > b) The changelog does not indicate > that any of the bugs that I have done > with their bug reporting tools have > been fixed. Not a single one. amaroK has about 300 open bugs, none of us have very much time. It's obvious you are a really important person and thus we should obviously prioritise your bugs over, say, bugs that crash amaroK, or bugs that lose data. Oh wait! No I'm wrong, we choose to priotise important bugs! I can understand that your limited intelligence will make you think this is the wrong approach. > As with most linux software it is > being developed by and for the > developer not for the users. Actually, we spend far more time listening to users than most other projects. In fact, since I spend about 40% of my amaroK-time helping people with amaroK related queries, we'd all have a lot more time if we just developed amaroK for ourselves. But we like giving it away, very much. We really want people to like it, so we listen to any feedback they can give us. I've even learnt some things from your disaster of a post. In conclusion you are a sniveling fucking twat and hopefully some bus will run over you and your descendents. We work so hard and comments like yours hurt. I've not been this angry in a long time. If I met you in person I'd rip your fucking arms off. As a disclaimer, I am aware most amaroK users are nothing like this joke for a person. Most of you are really nice and decent people. I hope you will continue to report bugs and understand that we can't fix them straight away. - May 23 2005

If you can't find the two ways then you haven't explored the application very thoroughly, and I can't explain the issues very easily. Start codeine by itself, not via Konqueror to see.

The play/stop actions in the menu have to be there if I am to obey the HIG, and they don't clutter in the same way as multiple play entries. The current menu is composed of items that perform distinct functions, multiple "play x..." functions are too similar and thus more cluttering/confusing.

Interface design requires you to think about a problem from many different angles and involves a great amount of compromise. My solution seems the best for the problems it solves, the extra click is unfortunate but as I said it improves the interface overall.

Thanks. - May 17 2005

I see. Well, I may make it possible to queue files, but there won't be an explicit playlist view. I'll try to make this intuitive.

I find that the current system for the Play menu is good. Yes the user has to do one extra click and a little more mouse movement, but I feel this is offset by the other usability advantages. Eg less menu items, less confusion due to two ways to achieve the same goal, letting the user get at the recent file list.

Thanks for the comments. - May 16 2005

Hi there :-) Can you justify a playlist for a video application? I'll add support for anything that can be justified and that won't violate my simple promise.

Volume control will appear as an action hopefully next release. It won't be enabled by default! But it'll be there for those who want it.

Thanks. - May 14 2005

So it is ambiguous because it doesn't know whether to convert to float or double? GCC 3.3.5 apparently sucks arse.

You can simply change line 65 so it reads blah log10( (double)foo ); and it should compile. - May 12 2005

Although I might add, none of these will speed up scan times. That is already bottlenecked by disk access speeds.

I may switch to GStreamer when it becomes more mature. There is a few advantages that the lower level would bring. Firstly seeking would be much more responsive, or in theory it would, but this might get fixed/improved in xine-lib. Secondly I could do some cool tricks, like (while seeking, show a small copy of the video at the seek point).

But I won't be supporting multiple backends, and I won't be doing this if xine-lib improves, or until GStreamer is more stable and mature. - Apr 15 2005

You are confused. All your issues can be solved by using a different multimedia backend, and by correctly configuring your ALSA/OSS setup. Probably all you need to do is switch engine (xine or GStreamer are best). Probably the easiest option is just install a distro that just works like SuSE or Linspire.

We will never make our own sound-engine, it will solve no problems, but create a _huge_ amount of work for us. The GStreamer people have been working for 5 years and still produce a product that won't work for everybody. What makes you think us working on our own would produce better results? - Mar 30 2005

We've actually spent the last few weeks bug fixing like mad. For instance I was number one bug fixer in the whole of KDE last week. We've fixed a lot of hang and crash bugs. Betas always have those, it's the way we develop, but we don't ever release a stable release until we are sure we've fixed all the critical bugs that we can find. Thanks. - Feb 14 2005

kio-locate

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by arminstraub 178 comments

Get it in now! Things like KIO slaves are less likely to have bugs, and this seems pretty well tested, so if you haven't got time it'll be OK. If you don't get it in before KDE 4 there is a risk KIO will be replaced by a desktop neutral tech, like DBUS is replacing DCOP.

Also KDE 4 could be 18-24 months away! We need cool tech like this in KDE now! Go on man, I saw the posts on kdecore-devel, all they need to accept the contribution is your OK. Do it for us! - Jan 20 2005
