Yeah it does already, just drag the URL to Codeine, or specify it on the command line. Shoutcast playlists work already too, just click them or drag the link. I'll make this clearer before 1.0.0 - presumably you want a menu item for adding a URL. - Oct 20 2004

So this is an aRts bug then? I suggest you report the bug with aRts, or do some research into aRts and vorbis issues.

With amaroK we recommend you do not use aRts-engine. GStreamer and xine are far better. Use one of those engines with amaroK instead.

More information is in the handbook, faq or on our site. - Sep 27 2004

No, and I should. It won't get into 3.3 now though it is too late. I think it should be in KDE though. The issues are:

1. Politics. There is already FSView, duplication is not everyone's cup of tea.
2. Nerves. I do not crave the idea of making the proposal!

But once 1.0 is done I'll take the necessary actions. - Jul 20 2004

The whole filesystem is kept stored in memory if you scanned it so that exploring other areas is quick. It is the kind of application that is open for long periods of time. Most people expect this kind of behaviour.

Would you prefer that after you have scanned / you click on /usr it has to rescan the whole of /usr so that it can show the map for that directory? I doubt this.

If you have a better solution, patches are welcome.

Memory usage has been cut by about a third in beta3 which will be released soon. Thanks for the feedback,

Copyright just means that you have the rights to decide on the copying
policies for the media.

I assure you you'll find a copyright notice attached to everything released under the GPL. The authors have just decided to waiver the various rights the laws of most countries offer them with regard to the distribution of their work. Without assigning a copyright they would have no authority to release their work under the GPL. - Jul 07 2004

Install XFree86-devel. You can't compile anything graphical without that package.

You'll also need a whole load of other packages like kdelibs-devel. I suggest you ask at some linux board for help like justlinux.com. - Jul 06 2004

If you channel an MP3 straight to ALSA all you get is white noise. I'm sure that is not what you want.

So you want a codec in between? This is what GStreamer is. The way we use it the only thing inbetween ALSA and your MP3 is an MP3 codec.

Use GStreamer and get what you want. - Jun 17 2004

I can help if you provide debug output, a backtrace or more details. For instance, does it crash after the same track? If not tracing the problem is harder. I suggest you join us on #amarok. This is not a good forum for bug hunting.

If you can't restart amaroK unless you login and out, try: killall -9 artsd first.

1. It should only rescan when you ask it to "rescan" or delete something. Otherwise it caches always, and I'd be quite surprised if it isn't caching for you. There are no paths around the caching code.

2. I thought I'd fixed that. Apparently not!

3. It doesn't override the default font to my knowledge. It does resize your default font, but this is an option you can turn off in the preferences.

Thanks!

Play/pause is an optional action for the toolbar for people who want less buttons in their toolbar.

I don't think it is necessary to have it as a global shortcut as 99% of the time all it does is call pause().

It is convenient to not have to remember another button combination I confess. But while amaroK standardises on using play and pause and stop separately, it just adds bloat and maintanance to amaroK to add another global shortcut. Also it is evil to pollute the global namespace.

However there is a bug report (AFAICR) for this issue, you may like to vote for it :)

For other users I want to reiterate that amaroK has global shortcuts for prev, next, stop, pause, play and show playlist.

Thanks,

1. Not yet, eventually the search browser may ship as a plugin. The others are likely to stay though. You can always hack the code yourself to do this though, I say this as it wouldn't be too hard. We can talk you through it on irc if you like.

2. See previous post :)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by fprog26 14 comments

Stop it. This guy has produced some excellent work. I think this is far more worthy of being here than the miriad of service .desktop files that are polluting kde-apps at the moment.

I agree it is not really the correct place, but that doesn't excuse your behavior. It's just rude.

And to the author, an excellent class, I will probably try to build on the concepts and make such a class for my apps. I hope it gets into Qt. One thing that occured to me while reading the description, is that this appears to be a good place for the compiler to try an make the optimisation of operator+ to operator+= itself. I wonder why it isn't done? - Apr 23 2004

You'll be pleased to hear this is our target for version 1.0.

We will be keeping the separate window available for those users who want to keep the winamp styling. We haven't yet decided how quite to play this, hence the overall confusion in the current interface.

I'd like to make the playlist window the main window and add a little toggle button which shows/hides the remote window. However then this is a little funny since you can close the remote window from the playlist and you can close the playlist window from the remote!

Just to lay rest to a few users' fears. The statusbar will be optional and 1.0's default state will not contain duplicate buttons.

Expect many betas over the following weeks however, happy testing! - Apr 23 2004

I have to commend the efforts of the team. I used to prefer KMPlayer as the interface was nicer, but now that is the reverse. The layout is clear, the keyboard accelerators are well thought out, the button selection perfect, the feature set is wonderful, the name rules and I love the icon!

If it was my app I'd have the scrolling info display as a statusbar with a little icon to double click for all the fancy details xine displays. But that's me.

The well categorised file and play menus please me especially :) I look forward to your next release! - Apr 22 2004

su -> switch user?

Does it let you change user, then should it be "run as other user"? If only root, then "run as root"?

Otherwise, sounds handy. I prefer to just open a terminal for stuff that requires me to type su first though I think. I feel insecure about letting the GUI have root access.. - Mar 06 2004

Hi, it installs to wherever --prefix is set. By default this is your KDEDIR environment variable with /bin for the executable, so likely /opt/kde3/bin or /usr/kde3/bin etc.

If you haven't got KDEDIR set it will probably be installed in /usr/local/kde3/bin which means amaroK won't run as detailed in the README file.

If you've searched your entire system for "amarok" (the executable) and it isn't found like you say then it is likely that the install failed for some reason or another. - Feb 22 2004
