How are you starting dbKalendar. Just by typeing superkaramba dbKalendar.skz ?

Looking at the error, it seems not to be a dbKalendar problem, but a SuperKaramba problem. It says it can't find the karamba module, which is very odd. - Mar 18 2006

It seems that it's a SuperKaramba problem and the fix is is SVN. I hope that will solve all unicode problems. - Mar 18 2006

That might have something to do with not having the correct fonts installed. The Shiny skins use Arial and the Dashboard skin uses Coolvetica (available to download above). If that's not the problem, perhaps a screenshot can help me see the problem. - Jan 29 2006

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

Ah! I found the cause of all this. It happens because of the input box! When I disable the whole thing, the extra dropshadow disappears. So, it's a SuperKaramba bug I think. I'll post a bug report now and see what happens. - Jan 24 2006

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

Thanks for eloborating. I tried kompmgr myself and now I see what you mean. I get the extra shadows too, all the time. However, the images I use in my skins are cut out exactly to the correct size (177x248). All the sides have a bit of drop shadow. I don't know how to get rid of this. Liquid Weather doesn't have this problem, but I don't know why. The 'window' size of dbKalendar is exactly the size of the graphics, so I can't make it smaller. Perhaps someone can tell me how this works in Liquid Weather, what's different? A quick look through the code didn't help me. :/ - Jan 24 2006

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

I think my post was confusing. Here's it in short:

1) If you have 1 dropshadow, it's part of the skins graphics
2) If you have 2 dropshadows, it's because of SuperKaramba (and I can't fix that).

In case of number 2: only solution to have no drop shadows at all is rewriting, making shadowed and non-shadowed graphics.

Pfff, hopefully it's clear now. :) - Jan 23 2006

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

Actually, all the dbKalendar skins I've done so far have dropshadow included in the graphics (PNG images). So, it's impossible to run them without. I'm not sure if that's your 'problem'. If you mean you have EXTRA dropshadows, then the skins need to have it taken away. Perhaps in the future I can create a shadowed and non-shadowed version of the skins and put an option in where you can switch them on/off for each of them. But that'll take lots of work, of course. :) If I don't understand it correctly, perhaps you could show a screenshot. If needed, you could email that to dbkalendar at parena dot net. - Jan 23 2006

Hmm, special characters... The translations that got sent to me have the same problem, partially. Hopefully I or someone else will find out how to solve it. I used the same method as in Liquid Weather, which appears to show characters fine. - Jan 11 2006

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, support for some type of calendar (I'm thinking korganizer for now) is something I want to do. I've been experimenting a little. First step is to call korganizer when middle-clicking a date, or something like that. I would want korganizer to popup with a new appointment type of screen for that selected day. I'm having lots of trouble with the dcop call, though. I just can't seem to get the right date format and I can't find any useful documentation ont it. :/

But, like I said, it's one of the things I want to do and now that translations are on the way with the latest release (0.7), I can try to put more time into this. Highlighting should be part of it as well, eventually. :) - Sep 18 2005

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

For now, there's no way to do this through the configuration menu. But here's a more technical way:

1) Create a new directory where you want to put the customized skin
2) Copy the directory of the skin you want to customize from ~/.superkaramba/skins (only exists if you have used 0.6 at least once!) to the directory you just created. OR unzip the skz file and copy the skin to your custom directory.
3) Rename the directory you just copied
4) Edit the __init__.py file in the skin directory (change the name, font, colors, etc)
5) Use the configure theme menu in SuperKaramba to enter the Custom Skin path
6) Use the configure theme menu in SuperKaramba to Change Skin

I hope that's clear! :) - Aug 26 2005

Try updating SuperKaramba to at least 0.36, then it should work. Fine. I haven't tested on anything below 0.36 (I started building dbKalendar when 0.36 was already out), but a friend of mine had 0.34 and dbKalendar didn't work either. - Jul 10 2005

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

Ah, I see why you have the error: you put the coolveti.ttf file within the dbKalendar directory (/skins even?). It shouldn't go there. dbKalendar reads the directory to check for the skins. I still need to improve the code that excludes directories or files that aren't part of the skins. Just remove the coolvetica font from the dbKalendar directory and it should be working again. - Jul 08 2005

The change skin bug is known, but I don't know when it occurs. I have it sometimes, but I haven't seen a pattern. Try running superkaramba dbKalendar.theme from the command line for example, and see what happens. Anyone else who has this problem, just send me an email or leave a message here so I can figure out what's going on. Thanks! :)

Coolvetica can be installed using the KDE Control Center (kcontrol) -> Appearance & Themes -> System Administration -> Font Installer. Use the "Add Fonts..." button. It will install the font in your home directory.

Good luck! - Jul 07 2005

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

That's my bad. It's because from 0.3.2 to 0.4 the skin configuration changed dramatically. 0.4+ is looking for a string, while in 0.3.* the configuration is determined by a number. I did not write code to support this change.

You can either throw away your ~/.superkaramba/dbKalendarrc or edit it and remove the lines involving "skin". That should make it work again. - Jul 06 2005

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

One of the things I want to do is use internationalization. Things like this are bound to pop up.

Now, I guess it has something to do with the character encoding. I haven't gotten into this yet. Perhaps someone else has a patch?

Something a bit different: it might be that the width/height of the box for "Mon" or "Fri" or whatever day it is, isn't big enough. The best thing you can do is go to line 108 of the dbKalendar.py (v0.4.1) and change this: resizeRichText(widget, curdateweekday, 55, 20)

55 is the width and 20 is the height of the 'box' that's available for the name of the weekay. I reckon if you change this, you'll get the desired result.

Sorry I don't have an immediate answer for your real problem. Maybe someone will help us BOTH. :) - Jul 02 2005

If you actually READ, then you'll notice I say that the Dashboard calendar skin is by Apple and NON-GPL. I never claimed that the skin is under the GPL. Plus, I put it down as a seperate download, so it won't interfere with dbKalendar itself, which IS GPL. Thank you. - Jun 01 2005

Nice to see you can tell your sister you're getting a calendar as well! :)

I don't know what the problem is with the font. It never happened to me. For me it's not even possible to get the numbers to be on top of each other. Check if you have anti-aliasing for fonts turned on, maybe that's the problem.

I, too, have a lot to learn when it comes to python and SuperKaramba. Like to recreate other Dashboard widgets, like the clock, sticky notes and especially Wikipedia interface. Hopefully, I'll get to do those as well. - May 20 2005

Wow, very nice! I hope to see it soon! :)

Also, could you perhaps send me an email, about the strange things happening when you expand dbKalendar? You get all these black parts. Is there a way to smoothen this out? Should I use masking? If so, how does that work? And which KDE has a bug so masking doesn't work? Lots of questions, I know! :) If you have any answers, please: parena AT parena DOT net - May 20 2005

Karamba & Superkaramba by PARENA 156 comments

One of the things in the TODO list is:
- Make the black weirdnes when expanding the calendar, disappear

So I hope to get rid of that, soon. The animation is hackish, but I don't know any other way. The developer of Liquid Weather told me to look at masking in superkaramba, but I haven't found good documentation on that, and in the api documentation it says that masking is broken due to a bug in KDE. Don't know which version of KDE it's talking about, though. - May 20 2005

Thanks for your positive reply!

Adding more options to change skins is one of the things on the TODO list. But changing the font seperately might be a good idea. I'll have to think about that.

Showing the time... maybe, but I first want to get all the options of Dashboard's calendar implemented, before I add new things. - May 20 2005

None of the themes I've tried (like LiquidWeather++ 4.x and 5) work correctly anymore. When I right click on the theme (tried liquidw++ and soundmania) and select configure -> some_option_that_should_give_a_dialog, nothing happens. Console doesn't show anything either. Also, themes look broken, like LiquidWeather doesn't show the icon at all. I'm using python 2.3.5, KDE 3.4, Qt 3.3.3 and SuperKaramba 0.36, all compiled from source (gentoo). - May 04 2005

Thanks for putting effort into these icon set ebuilds!

The icon set still doesn't get seen by KDE (3.4). However, they DO get seen when I rename the SNOWE2-RAD.E8 directory to SNOWE2-RAD for example. The "." is interfering with KDE?

The icon's don't work, though. When I select the icon set, KDE defaults to crystalsvg for all icons. :/ - May 02 2005
