Kaffeine Player

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

for my harsh comment, above - I don't like to have to pin the version for kaffeine in apt-get. in some time, kaffeine 0.4.3 has to be removed I'm afraid, so I have to stop using that player, unless the player has been made usefull (for me) again. that sucks, imho, sorry.

I loved kaffeine 0.4.3 - clean, just does what it has to - I double-click a video, it starts playing it. thats it. it has full-screen, subtitle support, back/forward/pause etc, its fast, easy to use, looks nice - but now it has become a 'media player'. whatever that is. Mediaplayers suck. all of them. never saw one that doesn't, actually. of course, windows media player sucks the most, but others do so, too.

damn, why does every player want to do so much? do what you can do best - kaffeine can play video, juk and amarok can play music.

sorry, still frustrated... - Dec 24 2004
Kaffeine Player

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

I fully agree. Kaffeine was a nice Video player, up to 0.4.3 - and now its over. it sux. its good for nothing - not video's (I have to keep this version or start using Kmplayer) and certainly not music (amarok and juk both beat this hands-down, and, of course - its silly to add mp3playing capabillities to a videoplayer, like it sucks adding video-playing to a music player - keep your own bussiness. why cd-burners that can play video's; texteditors that can burn documents; email-programs that can play music; etc etc etc etc).

you know, there is a word for this: BLOAT. I'd say pure shit.

sorry, but I'm frustrated to see this cool player burned to the ground. I quit using kmplayer, it was too buggy. discovered this great Kaffeine. and now - the horror... - Dec 23 2004

can't you show some of the new functions? this doesnt look any different from kde 3.3.x, exept for the wizzard.

and the speed difference might be your configuration. copy your .kde and other config files from your user account to the new kde config, and check if there is still a speed difference...

but its fake transparancy, slow, and hard to code (now its just a normal widget). so thats not really efficient, and not really 'KDE' (no code re-use, waste of memory).

anyone got lipstik to work under debian? didnt work for me... I followed the tip about make -f Makefile.dist, and this worked, but after installation, no lipstik.

guess its installed in the wrong place, as happens quite often - debian doesnt have kde installed in some special place like other distributions, eg in /opt or in /usr/local but just like other apps in /usr/lib and /usr/bin.

its not /usr/local/kde/lib/kde3
but just /usr/lib/kde3. etc

can this get fixed? - Nov 28 2004

KDE Menu Shortcut Improvement

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by maarizwan 13 comments

and its cleaner indeed. but not extremely so...

whould you be able to make it even more clean, with more submenu's? I dont want the initial menu this big. so graphics and sound should go toghether, for example. and amusement, education etc together etc etc??? Mandrake has a really clean menu by default, maybe you can check it out (there are mandrake livecd's out there...)

the current 'internet' menu doesnt even fit on my (1024x768) screen... and games doesnt include most arcade games.

and is this distribution-agnostic? I use debian, and I'm not sure if all apps are there, while some are there twice. I dont really use the menu very often (quickstarter rules) but if I do, I mostly have to search for some time...

And how does this menu get updated? if some apps exist but arent in your list, where are they?

I dunno much about the menu system, while having had troubles with it a few times... maybe you can enlighten me? - Nov 24 2004
