KDE 3 Color Schemes by dherik 7 comments

And the colors are nice. Face it people, regardless of what you think of Microsoft Vista's looking good from a GUI standpoint (so far anyway).

And yes, I'm sick of the immaturity of so many Linux users when it comes to Microsoft.

My only complaint with some themes that emulate other OS are the blatant rip-offs ("Bliss" wallpaper, Apple or MS logos and so on). Nothing wrong with borrowing the style but we're not running OS X or Windows now are we?

But I digress... - Feb 28 2006

Tarballs are for an archive of more than one file.

And in fact, this doesn't even need to be zipped. It's a tiny text file.

It's much easier to save in your ~/.kde/share/apps/kdisplay/color-schemes/
folder when it's just a plain text file.

Most of the other color schemes here are done just that way. - Feb 28 2006

Try again?

I can't help but wonder if everyone who writes software for Linux uses the same "template".

The lazy hackers stand out like a sore thumb and they also are prime examples of why installing themes in KDE sucks compared to GNOME.

I seem to somehow be able to install themes in GNOME without typing stuff like "./configure", "make" and "make install".

But I digress.....

As if this wasn't bad enough "lazy" KDE theme writers prepare their source code from the "source code 101" template.

The result?

WORTHLESS files with the source like.

a) README
b) NEWS
c) TODO

and my "favorite"

d) INSTALL

So thousands upon thousands of KDE users who don't wear pocket-protectors, highwater pants and thick glasses are left to fend for themselves.

In the meantime I think I should start with something like...

"./configure prefix=/usr"

Stay tuned... - Jan 21 2006

You've just hit my biggest peeve with KDE on the head. Why they had to make themeing so difficult is beyond me.

GNOME has that right for sure.

Drag and drop your icon, widget or window decoration theme tarball onto the open themes applet or extract it into your ~/.themes or ~/.icons directory.

No muss no fuss...

...no ./configure, no make, no make install, no dpkg -i. no rpm -ivh. No Synaptic, Kynaptic, No Kpackage, No Adept, No YAST, No Red Carpet, KYUM, urpmi, emerge. Yumex... - Jan 16 2006
