Thanks for your reply not being angry or offended. :) I guess it depends on whether you're aiming for the LCD or an experienced computer user. I'd be curious to see how those same users would fare with the KAddressBook interface.
Personally, I don't want my KDE UI to look like a Wii or a PSP; I want it to be clean and functional, making good use of screen space, while still looking nice. I think the current KDE 3.5.x does this very well, and OSX is pretty good also. But, to each his own. :) Maybe you should consider working on Plasma for KDE 4. - Jul 16 2007

The UI is really bad. It is completely inconsistent with any existing UI design standards. It wastes enormous amounts of screen space. It gives emphasis to unimportant items, and relegates important functions to strange-looking, non-standard widgets.
I can't recall exactly what the OSX address book looks like, but you could probably take some cues from it. And to be quite honest, the KAddressBook UI is far, far, superior to this. It's far more usable and functional.
Really, the look and design of your app belongs more in a game UI than a useful app. - Jul 15 2007

I upgraded to Beagle 0.2.3 and noticed that kBeagleBar didn't work anymore. When I do a search it just doesn't do anything; it doesn't even say that it found no results. I recompiled it with beagle-dev 0.2.3-1 (from Debian), and still nothing. - Mar 21 2006
No offense, but I have a hard time believing that someone who writes like this uses any Linux distro.
My advice (if you read this):
1. Dump whatever distro you're using and install Kubuntu.
2. Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Explain your problems clearly and with detail. Don't write as if you're typing with a cellphone. - Mar 13 2006

Amarok 1.x Scripts by kbulgrien 34 comments
Not all of my music files are MP3s: some are Oggs already, so I need the transcoding script to handle that. But no matter what I try, the script always stops with "Error 1" when the test to see if the filename's extension is ".mp3" fails. Of course it's going to fail on an Ogg file...but that doesn't mean the script has to quit there! I want it to continue!
I've tried using grep, I've tried using case statements, and no matter what, it always kills the script before it can continue.
*sigh* I've got it working great on one filetype. - Mar 11 2006

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by dbera 42 comments
1. A simple timeout for searches; if nothing's returned in so many seconds, cancel it and close the menu, so the user can continue using the X session without having to resort to something like restarting kicker.
2. Instead of using the pop-up menu, do a little trick where you create a special window at the same position that the pop-up menu appears, without window decorations or borders, but one that is a normal window. Make it act like the pop-up menu, in that if you click on something else it disappears. This way it wouldn't block input to the rest of the GUI.
3. Get KDE to fix the problem at a higher (lower?) level, for all pop-up menus. - Mar 10 2006

Now, I do have a small feature request, if possible: could there be a button or menu item for recording streams, instead of doing it automatically? I don't want to record it every time I listen to it, but it'd be nice to be able to leave the script activated without it automatically recording streams.
Thanks for your great script. :) - Jan 24 2006

Something I did to reduce mouse movement is to move my kicker panels to the top of the screen. Now most mouse movement happens at one edge of the screen: menus, launchers, pagers, task lists, notification areas, app title bars, app menus, app tabs, etc. They're all near one edge of the screen, instead of some being at the bottom and others at the top. I actually did this with Windows 2000 before I switched to Linux. Anyway, try it for a few days, you might like it. :) - Dec 28 2005
