[Cairo-Dock] Gnome-Colors Themes

Cairo-Dock Themes by MastroPino 23 comments

I discovered Cairo dock for myself a few days ago, and installed version 1.6.3.1. That's quite a high version number, but to me, the app seemed kind of rickety and unstable.

It's not well integrated with Gnome either, using a quite deep config dir at ~/.cairo-dock rather than gconf or ~/.gnome*.

Has anyone also else found it subpar? - Nov 21 2008

Thanks for packaging this.

As for Ubuntulooks itself, I'm not crazy about it. Overall it could be described as "Glossy Butterscotch". Just too orangey.

So, you're not prudish, but you endorse others' prudishness?

I voted this theme down because it's not very good -- it's just borrowed cheesecake. But it's just someone's bum, and I'm fairly sure a picture of a tuckus won't ruin someone else's life or pervert their morality -- even that of the Janet-Jackson-nipplegate-scarred U.S. readers of this site. - Apr 30 2006

Concept: Modern Desktop

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by kasra23 10 comments

It might be that I don't understand what you're trying to illustrate, but the image seems to show what many of us already have -- albeit more informally -- on their desktops. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Along somewhat similar lines, but with a more definite concept, there is the Mezzo Desktop ( www.symphonyos.com/mezzo.html ) being developed by SymphonyOS (Linux). It has nothing to do with KDE, but it could theoretically. - Aug 19 2005

I think it's because most of us rate wallpapers, not women. Pretty-girl wallpapers are usually not very good, and often they're tacky and puerile too.

"Artistically, OS X has raised the bar for OS design..."

That's certainly arguable, but must that mean that the only response is to ape it? There must be other ways of making beautiful user interfaces, right?

There's also the "de gustibus" factor: not everyone thinks OS X is the most beautiful. I think the latest Gnome looks really nice, and it does that not by imitating something else. - Sep 27 2004

komposé

Various Stuff by oisch 76 comments

...but a little buggy.

I found that its screenshots were often obscured, especially those from desktops with multiple windows.

It also once cycled through its screenshots-taking repetitively.

I have a screenshot showing the obscured images at http://dle.ascendant.ca/tmp/kompos%E9.png .

I like Komposé and hope it continues to improve.

Thanks. - Aug 07 2004

I think using the term 'home:' might lead to confusion in novice users with /home or $HOME. Maybe "start" would be better.

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by belze 14 comments

Not a bad idea.

One thought occurs to me: if a user is inexperienced enough not to know about the executable bit, giving them the option of adding it for "others" might be kind of risky. It's not likely, but still.

If it were my utility, I would remove the "expanded" part of the dialog and have it default to doing just u+x or ug+x. - Dec 21 2003

It is high time the administrators show some leadership and do something about the degradation of kdelook.org by people using it as a platform for proselytization in the form of wallpaper images.

One culprit--timbrown527--has even taken to making frequent *minor* revisions (if any) of his so that they continually reappear on the front page.

Some suggestions of how you might respond:

a general notice on the site condemning the abuse and asking for better behaviour
a private note to timbrown527 and any others asking them to stop abusing kdelook, and indicating that they will be penalized in some way if they continue
create an "All but wallpapers" category and make it the default view. The street-corner preachers will be less inclined to pollute the site (with such little effort) when they know that they are reaching fewer readers

I'm sure there are other steps you could take, and you're probably already discussing some response.

I believe that if this abuse of kdelook is allowed to continue as it is, the site will lose a lot of readers and contributors, and thus become much less useful. After that it will lose its advertisers, and eventually die on the vine as themes.org did before. - Dec 15 2003

It's reassuring to have IBM on our side, but let's not forget that they are also the world's largest holder of software patents. It's not inevitable that there will be a collision between Linux (and other open source software) and one or more of those patents, but it is well within the realm of possibility. - Dec 04 2003

As nice as this is, my flavour has to be one that has a GTK/Gnome complement -- such as Galaxy, Bluecurve, *eramik, etc. Without that, no matter how handsome a style is, the lack of a corresponding one for GTK/Gnome will lead to an incongruous-looking desktop.

I hope Qt/KDE and GTK/Gnome can perhaps work on a common styling system.

Nonetheless, good on you for this one. - Nov 12 2003

Why did you not submit a patch to axeljaeger's original sidebar ( http://kdelook.org/content/show.php?content=7999 )? There are already 2 projects forked-off of it, when it would be better for everyone if changes (or variants) we made available through the original project. - Sep 21 2003
