In my opinion, a temporary hack to fix a problem is better than nothing. The svn version of my script actually has a whitelist of acceptable characters, and anything that's not in that list just gets dropped out. It's somewhat similar to your solution, just more generic.

As far as changing the text color, you'll need to edit the conkyrc. You need to change this line:

Quote:${font}${execi 10 lyricsdownloader | fold -sw60 }${font}

To this:
Quote:${font}${color 000000}${execi 10 lyricsdownloader | fold -sw60 }${font}

Where 000000 is the hex code for the color you want. Like ffffff for white and ff0000 for red and 00ff00 for green and so on. It's just HTML notation. You can also just change the value for default_color in the file if that's easier for you. Let me know if you have any more problems. - Dec 29 2008
Also, as far as the cover art goes, I don't think that audacious handles that in any way, so I don't think there's any easy way to do that. Many of the other programs have various widgets and plugins to display the cover art. - Dec 29 2008
The newest version does fix this problem. I tried it myself with ac/dc. Maybe it didn't install correctly, but if you want to fix it for any artist that contains a backslash, you should change this line:

Quote:lyrics_folder = work_folder+'/'+ artistname[:128]

to this:

Quote:lyrics_folder = work_folder+'/'+ artistname[:128].replace("/","%")

The next version will do a much better job of sanitizing filenames. - Dec 29 2008
Thanks for the bug report. This is a problem I came across a while back and fixed it for songnames, but not artist names for some reason. If you download the latest version, it should be fixed. :) - Dec 28 2008

Plasma Color Schemes by downdiagonal 8 comments

Thanks. The easiest way to install it is to open system settings and click on appearance then colors. Then there's a button on the right called "Get new schemes". If you click that, you can browse through a list of color schemes from this site and click a button to install them. Otherwise, you can right click on the download link and save target as. Then you can hit the import theme button under system settings and load it from there. - Dec 25 2008

No problem. You can get it without the background by running it directly throught superkaramba (i.e. superkaramba clock.skz) or selecting a plasma theme like "naked" that doesn't have backgrounds for widgets.

By the way, you're English is perfectly understandable. :) - Dec 23 2008

I set up a virtual machine running Amarok 1.4 and didn't have any problems. Could you run a couple more commands for me? Specifically:

pgrep amarokapp
dcop amarok player artist
dcop amarok player title

Could you also make sure that your songs have proper ID3 tags and check to see if the folder ~/.lyrics has been created. - Dec 17 2008
It's fine that it's in your home folder. Could you tell me which version of amarok that you're using? I would prefer the output of the command: amarok --version. Also, is there now a .lyrics folder in your home directory? And if so, is there a file called missingsongs.txt in that directory? - Dec 16 2008
Could you tell me what media player you're using, what errors you're getting and what happens when you just run the script from the command line with a song running? Like ~/.scripts/lyricsdownloader.py

Karamba & Superkaramba by downdiagonal 24 comments

Thank you very much for the suggestion, but it appears that Amarok 2 doesn't save the cover there. It's almost as if the developers went out of their way to make it extra difficult for external applications to interact with it. :( - Dec 14 2008
If you download the tar, you can just drop lyricsdownloader.py in ~/.scripts
Then you can run the included conkyrc with the command: conky -c .conkylyrics

If you install with the deb, you can just run the conkyrc installed in /usr/share/doc/lyricsdownloader/conkylyrics : conky -c /usr/share/doc/lyricsdownloader/conkylyrics - Dec 13 2008

That's deliberate. As far as I can see, Amarok doesn't make that cover available to outside applications. I don't think it even ever gets written to disk. So the option was, display no cover at all when last.fm is playing or display a generic last.fm cover. I chose the latter. If someone has a way around that, I would love to hear it. - Dec 04 2008
You shouldn't have to change anything to get it to work with Quod Libet. Could you start up Quod Libet and start it playing something and run these commands and post the output?

pgrep quodli
quodlibet --print-playing

and try running the script from the command line and see if you get anything. - Dec 04 2008

I'm not sure what you're referring to. Could you be more specific? - Dec 03 2008
Thanks. I'm glad you like it. Regarding your questions:

1. Yes, that was an accident. It won't be included in future versions. It doesn't do anything, but you can remove it with rm /.deb

2. I would check to make sure the id3 tags are correct on those songs. It downloads lyrics from lyricwiki.org so it won't find every song, but it should find Eagle by ABBA. Also, if you find a song that there aren't lyrics for, you can always go and add them to the site yourself so they display next time you listen. I'm looking into adding support for getting the lyrics from some other sites also.

3. The filename of the song shouldn't matter at all. You could have a song called 96248b0a99c83.mp3 and it will find the lyrics if the id3 tags are accurate. - Dec 03 2008

Thanks for the comment. I've always felt the same way about the Gimp. It's the premier open source image editing program and many people create quality work with it. You would think some of that would find its way into the branding. The website's not even something that I would call pleasing to the eyes. I guess that's what happens when you let developers do the marketing. - Dec 02 2008

Karamba & Superkaramba by downdiagonal 24 comments

Thanks for the heads up. I've fixed the link. As far as Amarok 2 goes, there's really no compelling reason at the moment to switch to it that outweighs the downsides. Sure, it has some cool features, but it's surprisingly buggy and feature lacking for being a 3rd beta with talks of a release candidate soon. I just got tired of Amarok being pretty much the only QT 3 application that I still use on a regular basis. It sticks out like a sore thumb, doesn't load icons unless you're using Oxygen and doesn't change colors when you change them in System Settings. I guess what I'm trying to say is they're both a pain in the butt at the moment. - Nov 19 2008

I'm sorry I was so vague. All icon themes have an index.theme or index.desktop file. It's just a text file that tells the desktop environment basic information about the theme. There is a line in this file that starts with "Inherits=", that tells the DE what icon theme to pull icons that are missing from. On Gnome, it's typically "Inherits=Tango, gnome" and "Inherits=Oxygen, hicolor" on KDE. This way you can create an icon theme that only has a few icons in it and still have icons for everything. But anyway, I've uploaded a version that should, in theory, work for Gnome. Give it a shot. :)
