I know that a while back the ice effect went away, but would you mind explaining why? That effect gave Baghira an edge over aqua (IMHO), but alas it was removed. If it was removed for technical reasons, is there some other work around that could be used to implement the effect. Is it possible to achieve something close to the efeect with the current release. I breifly installed your last release, but after realizing that the icy effect was removed, I rolled my system back to your last release that included the effect. - Jul 30 2004

I am aware of the potential dependancy problem you could run into if you don't have the three required tools natively installed. However, the compression tools are bundled with every distro, and ususally installed by default. Convert can be a different story. It is usually installed with ImageMagick so I can understand if someone is having dependancy problems with convert, but, if you post your problem, I'll try to help you get it installed. If you built you linux desktop from scratch this may be a more difficult process. If you used one of the distributions, there are a number of software instillation tools that I can point people to that should handle most of the dependency problems. - Jul 29 2004

One reason why I haven't just posted the complete icon set is the script. It allows user to choose the icons that they want to use for their distribution (Mandrake, Redhat, etc). I personally run mandrake, but there are icons included in the set for numerous other distros. If I packaged one set, many people might never take the time to personalize the set to their distribution. Who wants a Mandrake star kmenu icon on a SUSE desktop. By downloading the kit, users also have a chance to change the default icon selections for applications, folders, devices..etc before building the entire icon set. This Icon set doesn't include a large number of icons for various distributions, but my next release, H3O, will contain icons for Mandrake, OSX, BSD, Redhat, SUSE, Debian, and several others. Personalizing that icon set will be must. - Jul 29 2004

There is an action menu script that auto-converts .ico files to a number of image formats. There is also the the script that converts mac icons to png files icnstopng or something like that, that can be used. A google search will provide you with all the tools you need. I use a combination of tools to perform the conversions, but the true power of the script is the fact that you only have to create or convert one copy of the icons and all the additional sizes will get generated for you. - Jul 29 2004

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by ipv4 223 comments

This is a very good implementation.

Things I've discovered about the application

1. I'm pretty familiar with the ksmoothdock 2.1 code, and I'm not sure why, but the parabolic zoom code doesn't run as smoothly as ksmoothdock 2.1. My machine is a P2 400Mhz box, and despite its age, ksmoothdock has always ran very smoothly. Kxdocker also runs pretty smoothly with the export CXXFLAGS=" $CXXFLAGS -DENABLE_REPAINT "following compiler directive. You may want to examine your implementation, and search for potential memory leaks, open handles, or memory hogging redraw events. I took a quick look at your source, and it appears that you are using double buffering, but something is slowing the resize as I pan my mouse left and right, causing the Parabolic animation to be very choppy.

2. Every dock except for kxdocker has suffered the problem of having the widget resize itself followed by the icons resizing themselves to fill the the newly created space. However, ideally, the dock should resize itself with the icons for a smoother look and feel. I'm aware that this is a product of the ksmoothdock 2.1 code that you application is built upon, but you may want to put a little effort in solving that problem. I'm not as familiar with the kxdocker source, but he definately has solved this problem.

3. I love the labels you've implemented. They remind me of my favorite dock (Yzdock).

4. You've implemented a hardcoded delay on mouse entry. Would you consider making the delay user adjustable, so that users running boxes at different speeds and memory configuration, could adjust this setting to their box.

5. Image seperators are a must. I'm not sure were these rank on your priority list, but since you've chosen to go ahead and implement the taskbar and you've manage to implement the a seperator that dynamically move as the widget is resized, I'm certain that an image implementation isn't to far behind.

Finally, this is a great application. It currently isn't very usable on my box due to the choppy animations, but if you can solve this problem, it would definitely replace the reigning champ in my mind - ksmoothdock 3.2. One last bit of praise: the drag and drop item list is excellent, great work. - Apr 19 2004

Various Plasma 5 Improvements by dangvd 703 comments

I've been studying your code for about 5 months myself, and I would love to help also. In fact, i've commented thuroughly just about every line of code in your project. Now to the point

Request: Before I start asking for a ton of features, there are two areas that i hope you guys will address first.

1. In the parabolic zoom mode, the wiget is imediately resized to acommidate the entire space required for zooming. However, I was wondering if you guys would consider modifying this behavior to have the wiget resize itself as the icons are resized (pulled from your item Qpixmap list). This way, the bar would shrink and grow in step with the icons instead of immediately sliding over.

2. Secondly, a slightly longer delay (user adjustable would be even better) needs to be implemented on a mouse over. The widget immediately responds and gives the applications a jerky feel. A slightly longer delay would give the application a smoother feel.

Feature Request.

1. I submitted a ton of background images to the kxdocker project, and I'd be happy to send you guys the same, if you have any plans of implementing background images for the widget. This is my sly way of asking for the inclusion .png background support!

2. You may consider doing away with the menu directory and storing all the symlink(.desktop files) data in a flat file that gets read and updated as new items are added and removed from the dock. I've got a sample file that I created while working on my branched version of this project. I created an xml file, because it makes it easy to group each application launchers' symlink data, but it doesn't have to be in xml if your not confortable working with xml files.

3. You should also consider using image seperators. Because your storing all the images in your list from the minsize to the maxsize, for an item identified as a seperator, you could simply store an image equivalent to the minsize only, and not have to change any of your code to add seperators. I've got a ton of those image files if you need them also. That way, as the dock is resized, your seperators wont disappear, and they wont be resized as if they were applaunchers, because there will be an image of only one size in the list.

I'll stop my list here for now, but I'm happy to see that you've returned and restarted your work on this project. Kxdocker is another project that has made a lot great progress, but I've always like ksmoothdock a little more because of the wonderful parbolic zoom design you came up with and the minimal memory usage.

I'd love to merge my project with yours also, so if you want some more help, I'm all for it. - Apr 12 2004

First let me say that this is definitely heading in the right direction. Your doing an incredible Job Stephano!

Now, on to the good stuff! Here are a couple of things that I have observed while using the application.

1. If I exit the dock via the left or right edge, the dock resizes itself very quickly. However, if I exit the dock via its top edge, the dock takes a while to resize itself.

2. For some reason, since version 2, I haven't been able to get the dock to use the background images I have stored in my home directory. In my xml configuration file I have the following lines:

_BackgroundPath="/home/guppetto/kxdocker/themes/bar/default" _BackgroundPath="/home/guppetto/kxdocker/themes/bar/orange_round/" PillowPath="/home/guppetto/kxdocker/themes/pillow/default" PoofPath="/home/guppetto/kxdocker/themes/poof"

Tiled="0"

imgBackgroundCenter="background-center.png"
imgBackgroundLeft="background-left.png"
imgBackgroundOver="background-over.png"
imgBackgroundRight="background-right.png"

The pillow background and the poofs work perfectly, but the dock always loads with no background image.

If anyone can point out my error, it would be greatly appreciated! I have all three bar themes located my

/home/guppetto/kxdocker/themes/bar/

folder. - Mar 19 2004

I've been working on a simular project, but instead of having compeating applications here is a feature set that I'd like to ask if you plan on implementing.

- Image based Seperators for items in the dock. Simple seperator that is not scaled on mouse envents

-Foreground and background image configuration (like the Snow Patch)

-Docklets (Sensors) A SDK (Simple Event based method calls for developers from the dock) for users to develope their own docklets would really increase the use of the application. I'd certainly submit a couple that I've already created for the dock that i'm working on.

-GUI based configuration tool. A KCM would be nice, but, a stand alone Configuration Form is just as effective.

-User defined application running indicators. - Feb 25 2004

Are you kidding? When are the majority of linux users going to to realize that anything that reminds you of windows isn't necessarily a bad thing? The example presented here is beautiful, and if it reminds you of windows, then thats a good thing, because some new user to Linux will have a clear understanding of how to get into the system. I love linux, and KDE, but M$ is one of the very best at inovating, and making a product that are easy to use. The Linux usability argument is at the top of every anti-Linux supporters crying list.There is a reason that more and more elements found in OSX and XP are finding their way to linux: People like these items and want to use them because they provide a better experience. The smart warrior learns from his opponent and emulates that which furthers his cause. It's time to stop yelling we hate M$ and start saying give us more ideas that we can implement better. - Nov 24 2003

Crystal GDM

KDM3 Themes by ybouan 18 comments

There are more and more GDM themes poping up because GDM is becomming the Login Manager of choice for many Linux users. It's very customizable which if you haven't noiced is the one things that most KDE users prefer. Also, KDE-LOOK isnt a KDE only site. 95% of the content is all KDE, but as a linux user (PC user different from the norm, willing to try another operating system to determine if ther is something better or perhaps just different from windows), you should be a little more accepting of quality work, regardless of whether it is a native part of the KDE desktop manager. If you were to see a 20 dollar bill laying on the side of the road, would you not pick it up and use it just because it wasn't yours originally. GDM is much the same. It may not be native to KDE, but it is very useful. Kill all of that KDE only close minded stuff and recognize a good product when it's available. - Mar 27 2003

You should rname the libray files the windec depends on to White_Aqua so that users of the original aqua windec can choose between the White-Acqua and the traditional Acqua. Installing this modified version wipes out the original because they both point to libkwinacqua and they share the same name in the desktop file.
