KDE 3.x Window Decorations by CraigD 12 comments

Thanks, after seeing you Geramik screenshots, I was going to do the hack myself this wekend, but know you've gone and save me the trouble. Thanks, this is sweet. The rounded corners would have been a great addition however. - Nov 21 2002

Why does your version of Keramik have round Menu, Maximize, Minimize and Close Buttons? Are you images from the gimp or your actual desktop. Keramik is the latest release (kde3.1 rc3 has the traditional buttons). I think I like the round buttons better, so could you provide a little information about them. - Nov 20 2002

This debate could easily be ended if the panel included an icon size variable like the desktop. A setting that allwed you to control the icon zoom size in the panel would also be nice. The basic functionality of the kicker wouldn't have to change and a miriad of applet icons in various sizes could easily be created to populate the panel with whichever size icon setting the user selects. For those that hate the apple panel, the kicker wouldn't change it's functionality. For those that want the eyecandy large icons, it another user configurable option. This shouldn't be to hard to implement because icon scaling is already built into the panel. - Nov 19 2002

Great work, you've outdone yourself on this one. However, considering most people use either liquid or keramik as their style, could a switch be implemented in the .gtkrc file, that checks for the KDE style that has been applied and configures the gtk app to load the apropriate widgets with the curent system color scheme applied. Or how about this;can the .gtkrc file interact with the system to obtain the current KDE style. Or, if that isn't possible, can a shell script be written that passes perameters (KDE style) to a new .gtkrc file that gets created on the fly when you launch a gtk application providing the application its' style and color scheme.

Sorry for being so long winded? - Nov 14 2002

I think there is a misunderstanding about the term battle that i used up above. Both the OSX icon set and the Aquafuson set are the two most popular sets for Linux in our Linux Lab. Mostly everyone uses a combination of both, but because the 128X128 OSX icons are inclued in Shox's extracted icon set, almost everyone uses them on their desktop. As for the battle, I was only refering to a light hearted debate we like to have in the lab from time to time about which has the largest user following. I love both set, in fact, Shox sent me his resizing script so that I can release an upcomming icon set that i hope will turn a few heads. I do however think you would be somwhat surprised by how many people do enjoy having and actually use the the 128X128 icons. Your icon set is beautiful, and I was simply requesting it in a size that you will definitely have to create if you are in fact planning to release it for OSX. In our lab, as I stated earlier 1900x1400 is the default, with Large fonts. Considering there are about 1000 users in the lab and we all have your current icon set, you would be guaranteed at least 1000 adopters of the 128x128 icon set. The bottom line is that we love the set, we just want the larger size. Please give some further consideration to releasing the addon! - Nov 03 2002

Have you guys given any additional consideration to creating the 128x128 add-on? With the arrival of Mandrake 9 and it's specific improved resolution support of various graphics cards, our entire linux Lab is running at 1900x1400 with large fonts. The additional screen space is priceless. There is a tight race going on between your icon set and the OSX set, but the availability of the 128x128 OSX set has it winning the battle. Come on, give us the add-on, we really want it. - Oct 31 2002

This is a classic example of why Gnome and KDE users should work together instead of trying to dominate each other. Now the desktop is capable of having a unified look. Excellent work. - Oct 29 2002

This background is excellent. Would you mind releasing several diffierent color variations for use on multiple desktops (Red, Green, etc). If you happen to agree to produce several color variations, could you keep the base colors dark like the navy background you've currently used. Thanks for the artwork! - Oct 03 2002

Actually, I can run my screen at a resolution higher than 1600x1200. I've requested a 128x128 set because on a 21 inch monitor running at 1600x1600 and above, 68x68 icons aren't so bad, but you can go blind with 48, 32, or 16 variety. I know I'm not the typical user, but everyone that I know runs Linux at 1600x1600 and while the 128 icon set is large, it's beautiful and quite an eye catcher. Besides most other Icon sets package them. Don't get me wrong, I know they would more than double the size of the package, but as a seperate add on I'd bet they'd be pretty popular. Thanks for a great icon set. - Sep 10 2002

How did you get the fonts to install? I've done the following with no success.

As 'root', create a new directory for your fonts in '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts' and put your new fonts in there.

Run mkfontdir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/new_directory .This creates the files 'fonts.alias' and 'fonts.dir'.

Run xset fp rehash

Restart the X Font Server as 'root' with: service xfs restart

I also copied the fonts over to /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/

and executed all of the previous commands without success. When I run chkfontpath, The directories containing the fonts show up, but they never appear in any selectable list of fonts. I'm using Mandrake 8.2 and Drakefont doesn't complain about importing them, they just never appear.
