OSS is deprecated, with reason. ALSA is the way to go.
Above the driver system, there are several sound servers like arts, esound, gstreamer, JACK - you name them.
What I'd highly recommend is to prepare your app to JACK. Currently JACK gets mainly used by musicians due to it's realtime capabilities, but I bet it will become more popular during the next months and years. Difference: JACK has a pull architecture instead of a push architecture.
If you don't want to deal with different APIs (and I doubt you want :), please have a look at the RtAudio classes which abstract all this stuff for you. Use it'S callback mechanism, and you get ALSA, OSS and JACK support as a gift. As an additional plus, you get platform independency because it also works on Win and Mac. Not convinced yet? Come over for a beer please, if necessary two or more ;-) .
No, honestly, please check it out:

It's worth looking at it.

Dolphin Service Menus by TOD 6 comments
Simply place a cd commend before the actual command:
Exec=cd %d && mp32ogg %U
and
Exec=cd %d && oggenc %U
Helps a lot :) .
Thanks & best regards - Feb 01 2006

It seems that mp32ogg doesn't offer an option to pass the working directory, but maybe passing a cd command to the exec line in the desktop file would be an option?
Anyway, thanks for the work! - Jan 30 2006
Some comments:
The source doesn't seem to be complete
File open and file save dialogs always jump to /home/ per default. It would be cool if it defaulted to ~/ and would remember the last used directory, at least during a session
When trying to output a file to /home/ there's no error message that I don't have write priviledges
The default window size could be a bit larger, and window resizing could work better (buttons staying in place, tabbar resized etc.)
I wonder if it wouldn't be more consistent to have (besides the input file(s)) a destination file field for each action. I find it a bit confusing that I get asked for the output file name when pressing the OK button. I'd prefer to define the "Destination file" equally to "Source file". Furthermore, I'd rename the OK button to something like "Process" and disable it until Source and Destination files have been defined
Command line options like the following would be very cool:
-h and --help to give a short command line help
-v and --version which prints the program version to the shell
-i and --input to specify input files on the command line
-o and --output to specify the file to create
Switches to specify the processing type on the command line:
-m and --merge
-e and --extract (currently known as "Split PDF", but actually it doesn't split but extract pages)
-r and --render
-p and --protect
This way it could be driven completely from the command line and we could create servicemenus. Example: kpdftool --merge -i 1.pdf 2.pdf 3.pdf -o all.pdf
Anyway, cool application, thanks a lot for writing it! - Jan 04 2006

libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libesd.la'
I have no esd installaed, and I will not install it. I even don't use arts. Is it possible to compile klicker with direct ALSA- or even better JACK support? - Jan 02 2006

What I'm missing:
* Commandlineswitches --help and --version
* Commandlineswitch to select the alsa audio device. I have not line out on my notebook but an external USB soundcard so I'd like to tell lmms to use hw:2 instead of default/hw:0
* lmms eats a lot of my CPU (1.6GHz P4M), so the sound gets crappy
* The latency is very high. This way, it cannot be used as live instrument. What I really miss is support for JACK (jackit.sf.net). This way, using jack-transport, it could be synced to Hydrogen. This would be great fun!
* Of course LADSPA will be cool, but it would be also nice to add a DSSI-host (dssi.sf.net). Your already existing synth could them be turned to a DSSI plugin and also used outside lmms - while other DSSIs can be used inside lmms
* Rotary dials are inconvenient to move with the mouse. There should be better wheel support and additionally moving the mouse horizontally could also turn the knob from leftmost to rightmost
Please note, that's not a complaint but the first thoughts I had as I tried it out. - Jul 11 2005

* Try to update to ALSA 1.0.9 so you get softwaremixing
* Stop artsd (artsshell -q terminate)
* Ensure no other audio application is running - Jul 11 2005

What about a control center module to create crypted lopp device containers, e.g. by checking the current kernel's abilities and let the user configure a loop back file? - Feb 20 2005

Could it get an ALSA interface? As soon you use OSS, your app blocks the device or - worse - an audio player plays mp3 files via OSS and your app cannot ring the bell.
The same with current ALSA installations, but I was told that the next Fedora release will use DMIX per Default (a software mixing layer), and the next ALSA release will probably also include DMIX as default, so it will be in the next releases of SuSE and Mandrake as well.
So, an ALSA interface would be really great. If you miss documentation, simply join the ALSA devel mailing list. - Jan 25 2005

Furthermore, this would be cool to send bug reports ;-) . - Jan 24 2005

first of all a really big THANK YOU to bring this traditional game on the linux desktop.
What does AI mean? Algorithmic intelligence? Algorithm interface?
Anyway, I installed 0.5 and it's really great!
Still, the algorithms do unusual things. If you're interested, I'll collect some misbehaviours over some days or weeks and send it to you. Let me know.
One example: Player three decides to play a solo, but instead of playing trumps, 'he' plays colours and looses.
Good for me because so I'm winning together with my two Co-players ;-) .
Best regards

I assigned it to jpg-files via context menus, but I get a black window. I assign it to folders, and the first image gets loaded.
I'd like it, if I could assign it directly to image files instead of folders, if the file panel would be hidden, if I could use my mouse wheel to load the previous/next image, and if there were a fullscreen mode. - Dec 05 2004

cool tool. I had a similar idea some time before.
So, let me offer some thoughts.
I'd recommend to create a directory on $KDEDIR/share/apps/kconfigedit/sets/DISTRIBUTIONNAME/
In these directories, users or distributors could create subdirectories, maybe networking-hardware, networking-software, hardware-sound and so on etc.
In these directories, place .desktop files with names and comments for the directories.
Furthermore, place different *.desktop files in them which point to configuration files to be edited. Each desktop file contains names and comments in different languages, plus some value pairs of services affected by this config file.
Now make your filesystem browser on the left panel show the localized names of the folders and the localized names of the config files instead of the total filesystem, so finally users do not have to know where a file is located.
As soon as the user klicks on a desktop file in the left view, the corresponding file gets loaded. Above the text area, the location of the file gets displayed as well as the localized comment from the desktop file. So, the user has the complete control which file gets edited as well as a short comment description what this file is for.
Furthermore, add a button - Dec 03 2004

Compression always depends on the filetype to be compressed. PNG files for example are already zip compressed, so compressing it again will bring small ratios.
RAR has the disadvantage to be proprietary. So, will I be able to read an archive in 5 years?
That's no choke: I recently needed back a very old file, and I found it on a backup CD which I created with zip years ago as I still was using windows.
So I'd prefer 7-zip over rar, and it was my first thought as I saw your app posted here.
Thanks a lot for your work! - Nov 12 2004

Today, I read an article about 7-Zip. Free algorithm compressing even better than rar.
The article (unfotunately in german language) can be found here:

Homepage is:
http://www.7-zip.org/
Linux port can be found at:

Maybe you're interested in doing a kio for this too, if you'll find the time one day ;-) .
