amaroK Video Capable [MockUp]

Video Apps by menace1982 46 comments

Most (all?) video formats don't have metadata support, meaning the user would have to enter it manually. Guessing based on filename might work, but is only a partial solution.
Usually there are only several big video files (mostly movies), and those are relatively rarely played. This contrasts with audio, which is usually a big quantity, but rarely changed.

As for you personally, how many video files do you have? - Aug 12 2006
ideality

Developers Apps by krawek 4 comments

ideality is a library. Libraries are used by apps, they are not apps. Hence I believe ideality doesn't belong to KDE-Apps. However, I don't know of a KDE-Libs site, so I don't know where I would submit this if I were you.

That said, I don't understand the purpose of this library. Is it designed to allow KDE applications easily provide an UI mode like KDevelop's IDEAi? If so, this is unnecessary, because Qt4 has this. - Aug 10 2006

Video Apps by menace1982 46 comments

I am in favor of ditching Kaffeine and all the other Linux video players and adding video support (with no video "collection database", obviously) to Amarok.
My reasoning? Very simple: from the user's POV playing video and playing audio has the same verb: "playing". - Aug 10 2006

I have another idea. Simply ask the user for an applicable password every time they try to do anything non-permitted with a file.
This is of course an inadequate solution for management of many files. But if you're keen to do that, why not just log in as root? - Jul 01 2006

Think of a Windows-to-Linux convert.
a) he gets stability
b) he gets freedom
c) he gets usability
...and, prolly the least important...
d) he gets a new desktop theme

All of this is arguable, of course.
My point is that people want to preserve some aspects, but also change some. - Jun 21 2006

> This is a copyright infringement.
Yes, I agree.

> Linux is supposed to be free
(AND is free AND will be free at least as long as current copyright law stays the same)

> because of things like this, Linux won't be free.
Linux has nothing to do with this deco.

> It is tainting the Linux community.
Exactly how?

> Please keep KDE clean.
This is light years away from entering KDE, don't worry.

> If you like this decoration, then just go and buy Vista!
Can you not imagine an individual that likes the look of Vista and the freedom/stability/customizability/(etc, etc) of GNU/Linux/X/KDE?

> But you do can create a look-alike and there's nothing that hinders you to do that.
Is there any point in stating the obvious?

> Of course you love Microsoft.
Can you give any arguments for that? I, for one, believe that Eldarion doesn't.

> That's why you insist in using their graphics.
Yeah, 'cuz they're so ugly that you need to love Microsoft in order to want to use them, right? Right?

> You really want Linux to be like Windows don't you...
I don't think he does. Eldarion, do you?

> There's no question that Windows is much better than Linux, in almost every area.
A bold statement. Care to convince me switch back to the nightmare of Windows?

> But people are so afraid to say it.
Afraid from what?

> Yet they want to use their graphics
...because people like them, which does not imply esteem for Windows as a whole...

> ...their interface-designs...
Ah, I guess we should just shy away and design crappy interface-designs, striving only to be different, rather that better? You try to take away the checkbox/pushbutton/scrollbar from the user interface and then go and find users.

Doesn't work.
Little usability feature: [...] (this is similar to iTunes behaviour)

hopefully fixed a paint bug in glass style titlebar
If that's about the bug I reported, now the bug occurs only with about half the windows I try, including Konqueror, BasKet, abakus, KleanSweep and minicli. Weird. I tried with a dozen other kinds of windows and couldn't trigger it.

Regarding the "Colored left part of horizontal sliders and bottom part of vertical sliders" feature:
The coloring extends about 1cm to the right of the slider. Dragging the slider to the left extends the bad part. Dragging it to the right shrinks it. Releasing it resets it to the usual 1cm.

I have a suggestion: add an option to make the editboxes (even multiline ones) glossy. This means that they'd look like they glossy buttons, only they'd look concave instead of convex. This can be achieved by mirroring along the X axis. - Mar 11 2006

Audio Extractors/Converters by HessiJames 608 comments

IMHO the merging process can be done in steps:
1. Decide on a language
If you decide on C++:
2. Add all the StealthSound functionality missing in soundKonverter.
3. Abandon StealthSound.
If you decide on BASIC:
2. Add all the soundKonverter functionality missing in StealthSound.
3. Abandon soundKonverter.

Therefore the difference in languages should be no problem, IMHO. - Mar 04 2006
