If one is looking for a new version, have a look at
It even includes session support. - Jan 14 2016
In the recent past, I have two instances of cutecom running at the same time, monitoring two different embedded devices. Both configured with two different baud rates. Having (named) sessions with the settings stored, would help quite a lot.
I'd might even try have a go on this but moving the sources to github or something similar would make providing a pull request much smoother.
Any chance?
Alternativly: Any recommendation for a similar software? - Oct 26 2015

Sorry for that. This file must have changed to a strange encoding by mailing around and about. - Feb 08 2010
Thanks for the tip, buschman!
Other translations are welcome! - Mar 05 2009
Sorry, I couldn't see this behaviour myself. I can add the plasmoid via the "add widget" functionality
Being a native German speaker myself, I would have added the translation if I had found out, how to I18N plasmoids. Not sure where the translation files have to be placed - Mar 03 2009
Try the RPM from this site:

It works for me using 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0) "release 90.1

You'll find the package inside the KDE:KDE4:Community:Factory:Desktop repository using your prefered package manager

The building error you saw resulted in the difference between KDE4.1.85 (where upon it was built) and KDE4.2 final.
Should plasma still crash on you after installing that above rpm I would be highly interested in the debugging output. You probably need kdeworspace4-debuginfo installed for it to generate useful output

Sorry for all this confusion - Feb 09 2009
This is probably because the programming interface between 4.1 and 4.2 changed quite a bit. Version 0.9.7 was developed using a beta versioin of 4.2.
I now have an openSuSE 11.1 installation with KDE 4.1.3 (sysinfo:/ says openSUSE 11.1 (i586) KDE: 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 4.9")
and tried the following:
I downloaded the src.rpm from
and as root run
rpmbuild --rebuild plasmoid-birthdayreminder-0.8.0-4.9.src.rpm
The built rpm will be located in
from where it can be installed.
Doing this, the plasmoid works for me without crashing plasma.
You could try this.

HTH - Feb 06 2009
I guess, you probably mean KDE 4.1.3 since KDE 4.2 hast just been released.
Anyway, I added an RPM package for openSuse 11.1. Since I included the the Factory repository, I've got KDE 4.2 already.
If it doesn't work, you can try to download the src.rpm and (as root) create a version suiting your environment with the command
rpmbuild --rebuild plasmoid-birthdayreminder-0.9.70-1.0.src.rpm

Hope that helps! - Feb 03 2009
You could try to run
>plasmaengineexplorer kabc
If it doesn't list anything in the categories "Birthdays" or "Anniversaries" (The content of the the entries will not be displayable but this does not matter). If nothing is listed, akonadi might be the problem.
The aformentioned engine just tries to open the standard addressbook. However, I had to import some resources in Kontact recently, after nothing was displayed after an KDE4/Kontakt update anymore. I'll add a screenshot of the relevant area of Kontact tomorrow. - Dec 28 2008
Thanks a lot for the patch. I added this to the current release.
I'm glad you like this plasmoid. - Dec 23 2008
The interface for tooltips changed on a quite regular basis on the the way from KDE 4.1 to 4.2.
Whith the Beta 2 out, I hope this is final now.
If not, one may remove all code snippets enclosed by
#if KDE_IS_VERSION(4,1,80)

You may try this again. The current version was successfully compiled on openSuSE 11.0 with KDE version 4.2 Beta 2 (build 4.1.85) - Dec 23 2008
Not displayable in the plasmaengineexplorer only means, that the explorer has no means of displaying the content (KabEntry) which is a typedef QPair<QString, QDate> which is registered as a QMetaType by the dataengine.

Is it complete black as in "black"?

You could try to change the settings "Show comming events in" to the highest possible value (90 days).
The 10 entries you can see in the explorer are the contacts from KAddressbook, which have either a birthday or an anniversary set.
However, that doesn't mean that these events are within the treshold defined it the settings of the plasmoid itself. The filtering is done in the plasmoid. If no events pass the filter an entry "No events" should be displayed. At the moment it is displayed - like the headings - in black. In case you have a black background you won't see either.
I'm still havn't made up my mind if I should add an extra option for the heading colour or just use the same colour as used for coming events.

If you still have no luck, you could try to change the desktop theme.

Let me know if that worked or not. - Oct 23 2008

The problems I'm seeing seem to result from the different access method used.
Behind a proxy nothing is displayed whilst the same configuration works on a network without a proxy.
Please reconsider using KIO again.
Thanks! - Mar 17 2009

Version 1 worked for me, version 2.0 doesn't. It doesn't display correclty. Text colour doesn't seem to be configurable anymore.
When clicking on an (empty) entry yahoo only displays a site containing the text: "Error: Please enter a ticker symbol."

I'll send you an eMail how it looks at my desktop - Mar 11 2009
