Flexible Plugin For KSplash

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by thilomaurer 46 comments

A tip for anyone using KDM autologin: If flexible starts before the wallpaper is loaded, edit the startkde script (it's in the same path as the KDE binaries) and replace every ocurrence of krootimage <somepath>/backgroundrc &withkrootimage <somepath>/backgroundrcthat is, remove the '&' at the end. This should make sure the splashscreen doesn't start until the wallpaper is in place, at the expense of slowing down your KDE startup a bit (about 1/3 of a second for me) because the script has to wait for the wallpaper being loaded to continue instead of just letting that happen in the background. - Feb 13 2005
Flexible Plugin For KSplash

>Fading up the real desktop background would unfortunately use all cpu
You could cheat and use a transition similar to the "ShadowFade" logout effect (
This effect uses very little CPU because it only operates on a small part if the image, not all of it, so even when the CPU is busy because the saved session gets restarted the transition should look smooth. - Feb 13 2005

> Does anyone know anyway, to be notified by QT or X11, when something behind your Window changes? Thanks a lot.
It might be possible to use the XDAMAGE extension for this, but that is probably too much work for too little gain. IMHO, the best thing to do until XCOMPOSITE is stable and enabled by default on Xorg would be to grab a copy of the KDM background and use it to make a fullscreen window that is either set to be the bottommost non-root window or the topmost window (like the redmond engine). This way everything else will either appear completely above the splashscreen or be completely covered by it, so you don't have to worry about anything being half-exposed an ruining your transparency effect. If you put the splashscreen on the bottom you can even do another cool fade effect, since at the end of the startup seuence kdesktop will hopefully have set the correct wallpaper, you could grab a copy of that and fade the splashscreen (which contains a copy of the old WP) to the new WP. The downside of this is that getting a copy of the desktop wallpaper might be hard to do as you can't just screenshot it like the KDM wallpaper because your splashcreen covers it, so you would have to basically duplicate the kdesktop wallpaper code. - Feb 12 2005

Could you do a larger version, too? - Jan 23 2005

Please fix the layout. Your program is completely unusable on my computer as I use larger fonts than usual. QT Designer is made such that it is actually harder to make fixed size layouts than dynamic ones, you went quite out of your way to make it this bad. It took me almost 10 minutes of work to track down every fixed/fixed resizeMode and every much-too-small maximumSize. - Jul 10 2004
Not only has it no relation to KDE at all, it also is just an advertisement for payware and not real content. - Jun 23 2004
task oriented kmenu

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Rene 12 comments

Put the Menu on the left, and the "Quick Acess" icons on the right. This will make "aiming" the mouse at the small menu items easier, while practically not impairing access to the larger quick access icons at all. Th long way th mouse had to travel and the dificulty of aiming where the one thing I most hated about the XP start menu back when when I ran XP on my Laptop.
I do, however, think that a XP-like (improved over the original) K-Menu is a good idea. There is only so much space in the kicker, esecially if you want to leave enough space for the taskbar and maybe some monitoring applets. - Jun 05 2004

KDE 3.5 Themes by jezek2 59 comments

An unified theme engine is something that has been talked about a lot but never really done. Congratulation for being the first (AFAIK) one to change that.
I'll test and perhaps join your Project as soon as I get the broken GTK2 libs on my machine fixed. - Jun 02 2004

Could you add an option to save the group password but not the user password? That would be very useful for me and people using similar networks where the group password ist public, but the user password is too safety-critical to be saved to disk.
Otherwise, great tool. - May 31 2004

Cursors by tinic 20 comments

These are VERY nice cursors. But they are a tad small especially on my Laptop, if you could make a 50% larger set, that would be cool. - Nov 07 2003

Icon Sub-Sets by vasszoltan 4 comments

Use a tar.gz (or tar.bz2), please. For icon sets, RPMs are actually *harder* to install than plain tarballs. And RPMs are a pain in the butt to deal with on non-rpm distros.

BTW, phantomik: the original BeOS Icons never had any kind of anti-alias, so I figure these must be redrawed versions, not coversions of the original icons. Therefore, these Icons would be (c)vasszoltan, and Palm (the current owners of Be's IP), even if they cared, would not have any claim to them. But IANAL applies, of course :) - Apr 26 2003
Is this possible to do this in a theme?

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by ra1n 18 comments

Yes, but it would be insanely hard to do it. I don't think this is ever going to appear in anything other than BeOS, but then, if some person with "m4d programming skillz" gets *really* bored... - Mar 19 2003

My eyes, it burnssssssss......

On a more serious note, a super-customizable Toolbar a la Phoenix would be nice, but I don't know if that's technically possible with the way the kparts menu/toolbars get merged with the application ones. - Dec 16 2002

New style 'Different'

Various Stuff by renoken 57 comments

Well, most styles have this problem, but the strong contrast between border and background colors in this style makes it worse: The checkboxes look really pixelated. I don't know wether it's practical to do so, but it would be really nice if you could find a way to anti-aliase the checkboxes. - Jul 09 2002
New style 'Different'

Various Stuff by renoken 57 comments

Make the style configurable, so the user can choose wether to enable gradients, and the widget shape (rectangular, fancy like in the first shot, perhaps rounded, too?), etc. That would make a killer style!

PS: Will you port RenoDesk to KDE3? It's one of the few thinks i miss from 2.x ... - Jul 07 2002

The reason most artists put title and URL in the bottom corners is because they are visible there without destroying the artwork of the image. I really like this Wallpaper, but the text in the middle is like an graffity(sp?) over an oil painting - it destroys the art the wallpaper is. - May 23 2002
Desktop Icons 0.5.0

Icon Sub-Sets by dave 64 comments

This looks like the start of a nice QNX-ish Icon set. That combined with QNIX or RenoDesk (when they get ported) would make a nice Desktop. - May 10 2002

You have to use the KDM that comes with KDE 3 to get the extended options in the logout screen. Maybe you still use KDM version 2.x? - May 02 2002
