this isnt the "official" way, but i just did a

kdesu konqueror /usr/bin/

and copied the bin files from my home directory to /usr/bin/.

i backed up the originals, of course so that if anything goes wrong, i can restore the old ones.

one thing, the kicker that loads is the old one. so after kde starts i just do

alt+F2 killall kicker
alt+F2 kicker

that loads the new one.

im using yoper. (yoper.com)

installing yoper takes only between 8-20 minutes.

those desktops are not the default however, if you want some of those themes im using, click my name to see my other submissions.

installing kde 3.4 needs you to download a file called konstuct, then extract it to somewhere. you can download konstruct from the link in kde 3.4 Beta 1 in the news to the right on this site. once you have extracted konstruct, open a terminal in that folder(you should probably use a WM other than kde while instlaling it)

then do

cd meta/kde
make install

and thats it. it will take a few hours to compile.

and it should work on gentoo as well if oyu dont feel like changing distros. i use yoper because of its speed(as fast or faster than gentoo), but like i said, it only takes 15 minutes to install it instead of the days it takes to do a full gentoo install. - Jan 15 2005

GTK1 Themes by davidsansome 280 comments

i think i figured it out.

i was using a theme from mozthemes.tk. those themes, on mouseover use an icon that is transparent instead of the normal icon.

that one worked.

however, the default firefox theme has a GTK button on the icons, and does a gtk mouseover effect, not a custom one.

so its something to do with the buttons, or possibly even the drop down icon for the address bar.

i just checked and the update/ok/whatever buttons in the theme manager and extension manager are Qt'ed and i get no crashes there.

hope that helps.

and i just noticed, the scrollbar on this comment box where im writing this message has no scrollbutton for down, although it does the action when i press in its area where its supposed to be. - Dec 24 2004

first, in firefox(havent tested any other programs though), i still get two scrollbuttons at the bottom, even though only the down one works.

second, when using any theme in firefox, it works, but when using the default theme, i get this

are you compiling from source? try that.

also, try using an older version, like .7.1. .7.2 didnt work at all for me, .3 is great so far.

you can also just change the deco when kde exits and change it back when it starts up, its not like youre constantly logging in/out of the computer anyway.

but most importantly, this bug should be fixed, this is just a temporary work-around. - Dec 22 2004

at least i think it is...

i install it from source and then i go into the settings page and change the colors there. then i change the colors in kcontrol and window still cahnges with kcontrol. i thought i should log out and log back in. when i logged back in, kwin froze. i had to go to fvwm to change the windeco. when i logged back into KDE again, i was using another deco which worked. when i go to change it to crystal-gt, and it is jut messed up. its transparent with random non-moving crap in it. .7.1 never crashed on me. although once it became a black/white gradient and i had to reinstall it.

this is now officially my fav windeco, replacing regular crystal.

lol, im still using .7.0. and it hasnt crashed once. right now, i dragged the .7.1 folder over to the desktop so i can compile it and it crashed. i think its jealous.

now that its compiled, i like .7.1. but can you have an option to have the dark gradient start from top and go down? right now, you can see a line between the border and the titlebar. it doesn't look bery nice.

also, it would be cool if the button backgrounds nad the actualy symbols of the buttons(the -,+,x etc..) are different files. that way, we can have a black symbol on while button to improve readability(0r any colors we want). - Dec 20 2004
