You can make a very small picture from a few pixels heigh and 1 pixel width. save this image as a *.pat file and put it in the patterns directory under ~/.gimp-2/patterns (or another gimp directory for your version) ... Now you can do a pattern fill with this self made pattern. See for more nice tutorials at http://gug.sunsite.dk/
