You can perhaps try and replace those buttons with another (larger) set from another theme. You might perhaps also need to change either the names of image files themselves or "image filename"s in the files /metacity-1/metacity-theme-X.xml - Oct 10 2015

Thanks for this lovely theme.
A few suggestions to make it even better:
1) It seems there's a problem with Synaptic Package Manager. The main window contents in the background goes black when certain actions are taken like reloading, upgrading, etc.
2) Unity top panel would look better with the same standard color used in title/tool/menu/ bars as it often assumes such roles, especially when app windows are maximized.
3) Also it would be very nice to use the same blue bgcolor in gtk2 apps (e.g. toolbar) like LibreOffice. - May 08 2015

It seems you need to change the command avconv -i "$input" -vf "transpose=$rotation" "$output" to avconv -i "$input" -vf "transpose=$rotation" -strict experimental "$output" because probably a recent change in avconv gives an error message to include this option. - Jan 26 2015

Looks very nice indeed; even though I find it difficult to work in so much darkness, I always have a temptation to use such a theme, and so I always keep one or two dark themes in my themes folder.

And the same goes for those semi-transparent windows: so tempting... But I also find it difficult when (which is very often) I don't have only a nice wallpaper underneath.

I wish I could find a way out of these dilemmas ;-) - Nov 28 2014

There's also this problem, which can be temporarily fixed by creating ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css with the following contents (which must have different color codes for other themes):

GtkPaned,
GtkEventBox {
color: @fg_color;
background-color: @bg_color;
}

GtkPaned:backdrop,
GtkEventBox:backdrop {
color: @fg_color;

I'd like to make the same suggestions to you regarding dark toolbar bgcolor also in (1) GTK2 apps and (2) Synaptic Package Manager, and a matching userChrome.css for Thunderbird as I've made for Ambiance-Blue theme here:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=147891&forumpage=3

In addition, in Google Chrome I see light blue-grey text color in context menus, bookmarks, etc. which I feel is not quite consistent with the rest of the theme although I cannot see anything about this in "chromium.rc". Can you please tell me how to tweak this?

Thanks a lot again for this great theme. - Nov 13 2014

GTK3 Themes by horst3180 160 comments

As an Ubuntu user, I prefer Vertex to Ambiance and Faience to Radience, because the former are far closer to perfection. And I'm grateful that you are much much quicker in updating Vertex than Faience (although it's a little closer to perfection ;-)

I have a couple of issues with Vertex, which I hope can be resolved in due course:

1) Toolbar bgcolor in gtk2 apps (I've mentioned this before, and have been using a tweak, but perhaps you can resolve this better one day)

2) Thunderbird main window: I use a custom userChrome.css for this, but I'm not very satisfied with the (amateurish) result, so I'm hoping also that you can perhaps provide a special solution for Thunderbird like you do for Chrome web browser, which looks very nice.

3) A Nautilus bug: sometimes, bgcolor in Nautilus main pane goes black (which doesn't happen in Faience).

Thanks again for this great work of art :-) - Oct 25 2014

I confirm that I have no problems now, thanks...
But I wonder if the fact that I've recently begun seeing a black desktop for about 2 seconds (Nautilus starting too slow?) might be somehow related with problem I experienced earlier.
Does this utility make any Nautilus tweaks that could delay its startup?
Of course, it might be just a coincidence as well... - Oct 18 2014

What's more weird: After I uninstalled it via Synaptic Package Manager and did the thorough cleaning, restore my Nautilus and other related packages, I saw your extensions appearing in the context menu and working fine with only one exception: Replace in Filenames appears only when a single file is selected and not when several files are selected (which I don't need much any way)
I discovered that actually all this was because "~/.local/share/nautilus-python/extensions" sub-folder remained after uninstallation.
Anyway, I've got it working in a strange way ;-) - Oct 14 2014

After I installed this using .deb package, Nautilus stopped working even after uninstalling PyExtensions.
Re-installing Nautilus was no use either.
I got this error message in Terminal:
ImportError: could not import gobject (could not find _PyGObject_API object)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Only after uninstalling and then re-installing python-nautilus and all other nautilus-xxx packages I could get Nautilus back to work...
Perhaps you should have added Nautilus 3.4 to package dependencies as well? - Oct 12 2014

Just to let you know that in addition to using the same background image for Thunderbird Folder Tree as Nautilus Sidebar, and a text color for hover effect there, I've also found that removing the entire section for "Primary Toolbar Buttons" resulted in a more consistent (and better-looking IMHO) toolbar with flat icons: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39189022/Delorean-Dark-TB-Toolbar-Flat.png
A minor, outstanding issue: The list in the left column of the Chat Tab uses dark text whereas light text would look better and more consistent. - Aug 22 2014

Thanks for this, which is surely one of the BEST themes and far better than Ubuntu's default Ambiance theme!
Using DeLorean-Dark 3.10 on Ubuntu 14.04, I have some suggestions for further improvement though:
1) I think Nautilus window represents the peak of the elegance of this theme, and a hover effect in the sidebar (e.g. as in menus) could make it the ultimate example of elegance ;-)
2) It would be great to have the same perfectly smooth transition/integration between titlebar and toolbar in all other apps (e.g. Chrome/Cromium tabbar has a solid black bgcolor, Synaptic and Thunderbird toolbar/tabbar bgcolor color is much darker than titlebar, Thunderbird active tab bgcolor is much lighter than toolbar below, LibreOffice toolbar bgcolor is both much darker and inset, etc.) - Aug 21 2014

Sorry, you see I know little about theming and I use Unity, so no header-bars here. Here's my screenshot (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39189022/vertex-gedit-kkedit-toolbar.png) showing Unity Top Panel, gedit (GTK3) and kkedit (GTK2) with titlebar and toolbar using the same bgcolor (as tweaked by me) and displaying light icons. The only problem with this GTK2 toolbar is that when you hover, the button turns almost white, making the image almost invisible. Probably you mean this.
Anyway, I don't think I can do more than that -- at least at the moment -- to tweak the GTK2 theme. - Aug 17 2014

Please, please don't be tempted to turn this great theme into a Global Dark Theme ;-)
There are already a few good Global Dark Themes around, like Dorian and Iris Dark, but apart from Ambiance and now Vertex, there isn't any other with only dark (title/tool/menu/tab/side) bars and light workspace.
IMHO, using the same dark bgcolor for (Nautilus) sidebar will make your theme Perfect -- More Perfect than Ambiance with inconsistent grey (title/tool/menu/tab) bars. - Aug 17 2014

ThemeColorizer

Various Gnome Stuff by salvoeur 2 comments

At first I couldn't create a new theme - I guess because I tried to save it where the Ambiance theme was. But it worked well when I saved it under my home directory.

It might be very complicated but it would be MAGIC if we were also allowed -- in the future -- to individually colorize Sidebar bgcolor (e.g. Nautilus) and Toolbar, Menubar, Tabbar bgcolors for for both GTK2 & GTK3 apps (e.g. Synaptic, LibreOffice, Google Chrome / Chromium, KKEdit - my favorite text editor)

For instance, Ambiance have all those bgcolors standard silver grey, which not only results in inconsistency but also visibility issues for the whitish monochrome icons used for dark themes. - Aug 17 2014

I've managed to get the same dark toolbar bgcolor in GTK2 apps (like my favorite text editor KKEdit) by replacing the existing style "toolbar" section with another one copied from the "menubar" style above, merely using a darker version of the file "inline-toolbar.png" as shown below:

style "toolbar"
{
bg[PRELIGHT] = "#FFF"
bg[NORMAL] = "#454749"
fg[NORMAL] = @selected_fg_color
fg[SELECTED] = @text_color
fg[INSENSITIVE] = shade(0.5, @selected_fg_color)

xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0

engine "pixmap"
{
image
{
function = BOX
recolorable = TRUE
state = PRELIGHT
file = "Toolbar/toolbar.png"

border = { 4, 4, 4, 4 }
stretch = TRUE
}
}

Thanks for these 4 Ambiance variants, which look very promising.
Here are my suggestions for future improvement:
1) Better naming, e.g. Ambiance colors; including Ambiance-Green, -Blue, etc.
2) I think the best is "Ambiance-02" (could be named Ambiance-Green) only two flaws: 1. GTK2 apps toolbar bgcolor does not exactly match the titlebar bgcolor although very close, 2. Synaptic Package manager toolbar bgcolor is light grey and consequently light icons there become hardly visible (although google chrome/chromium tabbar bgcolor matches the titlebar very nicely except the too light active tab bgcolor which makes light icons almost invisible)
3) All the same for "Ambiance-01" which apparently differs from "Ambiance-02" only in the selection color (orange vs green)
4) I think the variants named "Ambiance esmeralda" and "Ambiance variant" have a lot more to do, e.g. Unity Panel bgcolor not matching their titlebars, and a number of other areas also remaining dark grey.
5) I would love to see also a Blue variant along the lines of "Ambiance-02" probably with titlebar close button and others in a matching blue color as well. - Jun 20 2014

Enjoying this favorite theme of mine after a long break, I think I've found a minor GTK2 bug, under Ubuntu 14.04. Although Faience is still the closest to 100% perfection among all themes, including Ambiance, the window of a GTK2 application (KKEdit in my case, but excluding Chrome web browser) that goes to background fails to fully switch to a much lighter grey like other app windows, but the toolbar bgcolor remains the same unlike the titlebar. - Jun 08 2014

I think it could be easier if you could somehow find a way to sync this theme with Greybird (on github), perhaps a script that merely replaces menu bg and fg colors?..
