I am using Ubuntu 17.04 and it works for me. You need to put the theme in "/usr/share/plymouth/themes", then open the "darwin.plymouth" file and change "ImageDir=/lib/plymouth/themes/darwin" to "ImageDir=/usr/share/plymouth/themes/darwin" and change "ScriptFile=/lib/plymouth/themes/darwin/darwin.script" to "ScriptFile=/usr/share/plymouth/themes/darwin/darwin.script". - Dec 07 2017
