I will say that this does resemble winxp however at the same time it has some look to it or w/e that makes it completely different.

I don't really care for the look, but I am interested in the functionality.

wish I could give an example of a better look but I'm running a blank atm. however good luck! :D - Mar 22 2005

with this sort of application it's best to make it an external one being there are alot of encoding programs out there.
just having it external makes you able to pick it and whatever encoder you want. instead of "can we have one for *insert encoder here*" - Mar 08 2005

I've fixed 2 crashes and the compile error mentioned above.

the only problem I'm having with this now is it's so slow... if I run visualboyadvance without kvba it runs fine.

for the compile error I'm not exactly sure I really fixed it.. it just compiles and runs now.... - Feb 20 2005

I'd kinda like to see this go into the regular shutdown. perhaps have a button for 'More' options? I can't really give myself a good reason to have this program running in the background just so when I want to shutdown I can use it instead of the standard way. - Feb 12 2005

Not to say KSquirrel isn't nice.. but
If you found problems with other programs.. why not try and fix them? that is a major advantage with opensource applications. If everyone goes their own direction just because another person's program doesn't do what they want it to, then what is the purpose for any application being open source if no one is going to look at the code? - Feb 03 2005

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by mangar 9 comments

There were a few things that I agree could be inproved on. one of which is the devices section. however I do not agree that it should just be a directory listing.
apparently you have forgotten that you can mount other such devices that _not_ listed in 1 location. this being a factor a simple "using the drive's label or name under /mnt should be enough." is _not_ enough

kcontrol does need to be organized better. maybe this organization could be expanded to support multiple different organization layouts?
(I normally do not do this) WinXP has something simular to this. a classic layout and the new layout. I prefered the classic but the option was nice for those that didn't know what they were looking for.

information icons in the systray I don't think are bad. optional applets are Ok however I don't want them. my screen is already filled up making things bigger is unneccessary.

trashcan applet? .. why?.. only use that I can see if easy access to it to undelete something. but then I rarely ever use the option "move to trash" and if I do it was by mistake.
there are times tho that I would like things to be moved to the trash.. but most of the time it's in other programs like kuickshow. unfortunatly kuickshow does not have an option to do this.

sidebar icon side. I agree.. why are these hard coded? shouldn't they be configurable like every other icon size? (I personally think 16x16 is fine tho)

firefox drag and drop. Interesting.. but no.. I'll take the old way anyday.. the first time I went into firefox and wanted to change the toolbars i was horribly confused on what the heck was this window doing here with no way move it.
I will say that toolbar config could be easier. however I would suggest that the tool bars be made simular to the way kicker is designed. right click on the toolbar you want to change, click configure. and you are presented with a list of what is in the toolbar and what you can add to it.
another feature that I'd suggest is that you can move these icons on the toolbar without any sort of config tool. like in kicker you can click the mouse wheel and drag the button around.

localization wizard. This would be nice. I would love to see everything use utf-8 encoding by default. I hate seeing ????.ogg for example (yes this is a filesystem error too. anyone know how I can get that to switch?)

Overall you do point out some areas :) - Jan 06 2005
Kaffeine Player

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

Why Tabs are NOT good
say your watching a video and you want to move things around in your play list.
Oops.. you have miss something just so you can adjust something, like delete/add/move..
what's the purpose of that page that displays everything that kaffeine can do? you wanna know what it does.. look at the menu's.

an approach that I'd think would Improve kaffeine would be to loose the tabs get back the seperate window playlist. and if you want to add something to display what kaffeine can do put buttons or something along the side.
Or if you want to keep it all 1 window do a konq. side bar thing with the playlist and "what kaffeine can do" stuff. Just please.. no more tabs...

Tabs are only useful if you do NOT want or need to see something. IMO a video should never have to be hidden to do something as common as a playlist modification.

It is of course up to the author how you wish to implement things. But I as well will never upgrade past 0.4.3 and have been trying to find another player. - Jan 04 2005

Linux virus (larger version)

Wallpaper Other by flamingpoptart 6 comments

here is my interpretation.
a virus doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing.
a virus by nature is catchy. goes from 1 host to another spreading itself.
Linux is like this. it spreads by 1 linux user telling a friend and getting the friend "infected"

Linux obviously isn't a bad thing so getting infected is a good thing. ;)

more or less this is a play on words. - Jan 02 2005

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by matrix280682 13 comments

I have to agree.
text in pictures that are there for informational purposes should not take away from the overall look to the image.
this green text is not only a very large contrast but also draws too much attention to it.
if this were to be fixed I think it would be an exceptional splash screen
as it stands i won't even download it, as I would be tempted to remove that ugly copyright text. - Aug 21 2004

task oriented kmenu

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Rene 12 comments

First windows does have a usability team and all they do is gather ideas on what would make things easier to use. somethings some would argue isn't very user friendly yet in a way we have already copied them in MANY ways
minimize, maximize and close buttons in the upper right hand corner anyone?
that and the idea of a taskbar.
copying good ideas isn't a bad thing at all. but I agree that we should make these good ideas ours.
I don't think the idea is bad. but could have a few improvements. first if this was to be done it should have an option between the new and old style. from the looks of it the only thing really new would be to put the most used apps on the left side instead of on top. this would allow for more used apps to be listed there but at the same time would require more mouse travel distance which I don't like.
I like the run command dialog tho. I have one of those in kicker loaded. so it's not really necessary.
I liked the todo list I'm very forgetful forget names almost immediatly after I'm told them but this should be added in a easy to use way. perhaps add a textedit widget to the menu? that would be the easyest to add anyway. tho it could be taken a lil further to where you click an area and it in a sense adds a new text edit widget that would auto size itself as you type given a certain bountry that is maybe 2-3 lines then after it's deselected would be something like this:
blah blah blah bla...
in a tool tip or when you click the full message is displayed.

the IM implentation is nice too. tho also a lil unnecessary.

might be nice to make some sort of a plugin for the kmenu that would allow the user to plugin different things they would want to see in that side panel.
if this was to be added I would like to see the option for what side you want it to be displayed on left or right. - Jun 06 2004
Edit as Root

Dolphin Service Menus by gammaknife 44 comments

Instead of just having it only let you run it as root. why not let the user pick ANY file to be ran as ANY user.
this would allow users to not only edit files as any user they want.. but also run any program or whatever as any user they wanted.
for example, yesterday I was logged in under my account.. but wanted to run kopete as a different user..
to do this I had to give access to my X server.. then log in as that user.. then run kopete. (I understand that I could have done this with the run command dialog but I wasn't thinking at the time.. it was late :P) - Apr 21 2004
