it's a fake. If you don't take my word, try to view an avi file, and select a menu on top of that window, you'll see how the shadows are not in sync with the video.

The original graft of shadow code was just a rip off the kde menu shadow code. .

we know. We know it's buggy, it doesn't really work and it's crapware. This is just a _fake_; a dirty hack, a programmer's nightmare.

And it will NOT work, unless QT supports alphablending. The Real Alphablending (tm).

If and when qt supports the needed features we will kick our asses to get the real shadow in. - Feb 25 2003

Is there any particular reason for you to use kde 3.0.5? Check http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/

There you'll find unofficial, uncrippled kde 3.1 packages, they work like a charm.

In my box, it was a matter of ./configure --prefix=/usr, but you may have to give additional options ...

yes, we know about this. As said before, the code is not really meant to work; but just to give a feeling of what we _really_ should like.

As for wine, what I do is click on the bacground to get rid of focus in the wine window, then change desktop.

Or else, you can disable shadows ;-)

kde includes are in /usr/include/kde, (in your case, could be /usr/local/include/kde). Try adding the right path to --with-extra-includes.

You may want to check too if file workspace.h exists in your filesystem, and where.

And finally, qt has specific options: --with-qt-dir, --with-qt-includes which may or may not help.

Please, keep in touch and post your configure/make line if you solve it. I'll save other users' time ;-) - Feb 20 2003

it would really help everybody if people added comments on exactly how to compile this code on different plattforms. In Rh 8.0 + rex dieter kde packages (see sourceforge), it worked with just ./configure --prefix=/usr; make; make install (as root).

you need to install the developement packages for kde and qt...

and if you have them installed, tell so to ./configure, using --with-extra-includes ...
--with-extra-dirs ...

If consensus arises about this, I think it'd take 1 line of code. But anyway, is it worth to try and fix shadows? That part will get properly rewritten some day, we hope....

I didn't see your mail! it probably means you didn't install qt-devel, or that moc is not in your path. You can check with

find / -name moc, and see what happens...

Steel Icons

Icon Sub-Sets by Doches 48 comments

I do like this icon set. Very much. It's a good effort, and it sure give KDE a "unique" and "personal" look.

However, I find the shapes (and just the shapes) to be a little too cartoonish. Take for instance the K icon: I think it's too much skewed. Also the trash bin looks like a metallized hamburger wrapper ;-). Please, don't take this for a criticism, but for what it is: a simple suggestion. - Nov 26 2002

For one thing, you can try to make round corners with pixmaps and see what happens. That's why a theme as in "KDE3 theme manager" won't work.

On the other hand, you don't compile graphics, you compile code which in turn, draws graphics on your screen. Actually, this is not the whole truth, but you get the gist.

If, however, you have any other suggestions to improve this (or any) window decoration or widget style, I (and others) will be glad to hear about it. - Nov 26 2002

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by thormedia 38 comments

I sent new code to thormedia with an option to keep the old menu button. It'll make its way in a couple of days. Also it includes "poor man's transparency" by removing 1 out of every 2 pixels in the title bar.

You'll get options editing "FEATURES.h". (This idea is stolen from the ACE version). When I have time to steal more code, I'll add it as a configurable option.

Any Volunteers for cooking up a kcm-module?

We would welcome any contributions, ideas, test-code, etc. on the following topics:

1) Transparent titleblars. Real one, not masking.

2) Drawing shadows outside windows, that is, shadows on desktop.

3) Any other suggestions to make it look macosx-ish. - Nov 05 2002

Test. Shake well. Serve cold.

Just to keep the record straight; this decoration is the happy child of Mr. James Liu.

I just played with it; added a couple of lines and deleted a couple of others. In a very crude manner too, since I'm not a programmer! - Oct 23 2002

Hi there!

I managed (imitating james liu's code) to make rounded bottom corners for this win deco. (see shot 3).

If someone would like to host this mod, I could make it available.

PS: no developers round? Nobody compiled this for kde 3.0.4? will someone convert it to kde 3.1 when it arrives? - Oct 18 2002
