GnoMenu Skins by technoshaun 16 comments

First off the Kore and Kore2 GnoMenu themes were made from scratch for the GnoMenu project. They were not copied or pasted from any of your works they just followed your base design.

Secondly, your original works are under GPL license which means I am ALLOWED to modify them under the conditions of that license. Since that is the case you CANNOT stipulate otherwise. If you refuse to follow the terms of the GPL then you are in violation of said license. - May 21 2009

I love the design myself. This is the menu I use, not because I designed it but because it has proven, for me, the most functional and logical layout so far. When I show Linux off to New users they comment on how much better this menu is then XP's or Vista's. - May 04 2009

I see nothing wrong with this, though GnoMenu is directing away from using Windows like layouts as a default it can still use them. There will be those whom will want this though few compared to those which are looking for Linux and or distribution specific buttons. - Jan 22 2009

Outstanding Job. This is what I was hoping to see. Unique designs that break the Vista look. Something GnoMenu has been capable of from the beginning.

A few adjustments and it will be near perfect. I like the way you took my concept and added to it.

Like Helder said it is a bit big but overall this is a great design. Now my default. Thanks for the good work. - Jan 04 2009

GnoMenu 1.7 can use system colors or it can utilize theme colors set be the menu theme designer. As far as the Icons go, GnoMenu has always used the system theme Icons in the menu panel, however the Vista style menus require an Icon theme for display of the extra features. When we discuss the use of system Icons over theme Icons that is what we are referring to.

BTW if you pull the trunk source and compile it you'll see GnoMenu is indeed system color aware now. - Dec 29 2008

Yes it is possible now [I even think I said that :-)] However it also requires a bit more skill and time I don't have at this moment. Supporting a huge group of wireless network users right now and that is eating at both my sanity and time. Plus trying to right up a blueprint for GnoMenu 2.

Besides I was looking for feedback on the design and concept at the moment.

The final thing is if I do make it for the GnoMenu 1 series it will stay have to be redone for GnoMenu 2. What I'm looking for is ideas and improvement for a GnoMenu 2 default theme. - Dec 29 2008

The Vista Menu look will always be an option and available but we also want to make GnoMenu do more than be a Vista look alike.

I'm still heavy into blueprinting it out and haven't even posted it yet for approval but the main goal is to open GnoMenu to many options to allow menu theme creators to become extremely creative. Multiple panes, tabs and animation effects are just a few of the things we are looking to do. It isn't going to happen over night but there are a lot of features the whole team would like to add but the biggest thing right now is to first port over the whole kit and kaboodle to Python 3. - Dec 29 2008

We have already made GnoMenu system color aware and gnome menu compliant. Its being discussed to have GnoMenu use the system Icon theme instead of having its own set. (That is my preference anyway)

The GnoMenu 2 plan is to allow for many different and unique menu designs but for the default we want to keep familiararity and at same time remove the Vista look so this concept is more of a hybrid design. Layout somewhat Vista-ish but nothing else is Vista like. I didn't want to lose the convenience that came with the GnoMenu designs from the orignal Gnome Menu Vista by Chris and still follow Helder's goal to remove the Vista look from the default menu. - Dec 29 2008

Smoki we could sure use your help on the team as a packager. Please consider joining us at

https://launchpad.net/gnomenu

We are also looking for graphic artists and interface designers. One of the blueprints is to create a new default theme that looks nothing like Vista or XP. Floating some ideas but we need some serious minded people to work on this project. Helder has been handling most of the coding while I have been working on documentation and keeping everything in order at Launchpad. - Nov 23 2008

What is the paths to your images, music and videos folders. This works fine for me. However no two distros follow the same concept and some use the following path ~/documents/pictures while Ubuntu uses ~/pictures. If your path is different then you should create a bug report at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnomenu

This way Helder and the rest of the GnoMenu team can look into fixing it. I suspect that GnoMenu may not be using the default paths in your System settings and rather, is using hard coding of the paths. It is things like this we are looking for to be reported to us so we can fix the small annoyances and make a very serious menu system. Helder just added system color awareness so that Theme makers can make system color aware menus, or if they choose code in their own color scheme in their themes and tell GnoMenu not change them. (Including the text color) which is a bug I reported and then wrote the blueprint on for it to be fixed. This feature will be in the 1.7 release. We are working hard to make GnoMenu a serious and professional menu alternative for Gnome. But we need these bug reports posted at Launchpad. - Nov 23 2008
First one is when I add/remove software or enable/disable menu entries GnoMenu does not show the changes unless I restart it. Can be a bit ugly about it too.

Second on is menu buttons don't scale to gnome panel size.

Neither are major but can be a bit of a PIA to deal with. - Nov 17 2008

Various Gnome Stuff by Whise 146 comments

I tried the original Gnome Vista menu by qb89dragon and it didn't work for me. This one does a much better job. Kudos for taking it and making it better.

I do have a couple of suggestions:

1. If you can, make Gnomenu use the current user Icon theme. The use of different styled Icons just throws it off a bit.

2. Can you add a back side bar instead of placing the back button all the way at the bottom. Some menus can have a lot of selections in them and having to scroll to the bottom (even with the mouse wheel) can be a bit of a PIA. Placing a thin bar to the left that one can click to go back to the previous menu would actually make Gnomenus usability much better.

Now some questions:

Do you need help documenting this project?

What is required to make themes?

How do you make themes?

Can a theme create a completely different style of menu layout? - Nov 13 2008

Try unpacking the tarball the cursors are in and copying the cursors folder to /usr/share/icons and then see if you can select the cursors after you do that. If not then we can try other things. You can contact via the send message option that will pop up if you hover over my picture in the top right hand corner and we can work this out. I had absolutely no issues gettng the mouse theme to work so lets look at possible issues.

I reloaded the uploaded and made sure I grabbed the right file. It should show Marbles when you select it not 3D_Marbles if it still does try renaming the folder in ~/.kde/share/apps/ksplash from 3D_Marbles to Marbles.

I double checked everything for you on my end let me know if you still have issues. This particular splash screen has been had some odd issues and I thought I had them all worked out.

Its working on my end but then it maybe throwing a wrench in the works for others.

Anyway if you need to send me a screen shot (if you can) of what its doing so I can see what is going on.

KDE 3.5 Themes by technoshaun 8 comments

Personally I would like to see more artistic cursor sets beyond what seems to be the norm in Linux. I would love to see themed Icon and cursor sets like Winbloat users have. Linux, KDE and even Gnome have the ability to change look, feel and methods way beyond what Winbloat can do and yet most things out there are fairly generic.

When I look at some of the cursor sets available to Winbloat users and then look at the rather small choices we have available it just makes no sense. Xorg has a lot more potential and yet it just doesn't seem to get used.

There just seems to be a lot more that can be done and oddly enough we end up with some fairly limited choices. Colorized cursors are there but style choices are limited. While Icon sets are being developed cursor sets seem to be left fairly generic.

I'm no graphic artist I just take what's out there and put it together. But I see so many cursor sets that even if I can convert them for use from Windows sets i can't use because of licensing and copyright issues. It would be nice to see new cursor eye candy that is both functional and artistic. Would love to see some "outside the box" thinking as well. - Dec 27 2007

The screen shots don't do it justice and despite the heavy blue the background is actually very nice. I have had no issues with being able to see anything and because of the drop in resolution on the screen shots a large anount of the more vibrant tones don't show through.

Thank you for making a cursor set that fit the theme. Any chance of making more cursors in the future? - Dec 27 2007

KDM Theme Manager

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by smileaf 237 comments

In order to use KDM themes in Gutsy you must do the following:

1: Remove the file located under /etc/default/kdm.d (like an idiot I forgot to write down its exact name.) This file contains information that will over ride any changes you make to kdmrc.

2: Remove the KDM Theme Manager if you have it installed. It is broken in Gutsy and will create all sorts of havoc in your kdmrc file.

3: To specify which KDM theme you wish to use you must HAND EDIT /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc Search for "#UseTheme=true" and remove the leading # symbol, then right above it add the line "Theme=[fullpath to the KDM Theme file]" usually /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/[directoryname]

4: Make sure that the Theme file has BOTH GdmGreeterTheme.desktop and KdmGreeterTheme.desktop files in it. Canonical did something to KDM and it seems to be reading GdmGreeterTheme.desktop instead of KdmGreeterTheme.desktop

To use this theme file it is suggested you unpack this file and copy the Liquid_Splashy directory under the KDM directory to /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes and then add the line "Theme=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/Liquid_Splashy" to kdmrc.
Note: At some point your kdmrc file may get over written by your system. If this happens simply put the full path name back in "Theme=" line

Once you have made your changes to kdmrc you must restart your system for them to take effect. - Dec 16 2007
