sorry, but now the open source design community is not available because there are no projects to work on...
at the moment i'm working on a new icon style called iBlue, and i already made the suse logo :-)

you can make some text effects using GIMP, i think that here you can add a gradient effect. To do this, select the text layer and in the menu select layer>transparency>alpha to selection;
now you can see that only the text is selected, after select the gradient tool and fill the text with it :-)

your wallpapers are really good so i think that we can make really good icons. i use GIMP 1.3. i just opened my web design studio on http://www.tkdesign-studio.com and if you want to contribute in open source projects just send me an e-mail, it's better than comments, because comments contain suggestions on an artwork and i think this comment it's not releated to clean_kontact :-)

i made my steelwave icons just for the splash-screen but i see many people like them, if you want i can send you the icons i made for that splash-screen... i plan to make this icon style available on may or june.

if you want to improve this splash-screen, try to add some shadows to te text or the other images in it.

1. filters > noise > noisify...
in the options set 10 to all settings;
2. filters > blur > guassian blur...
