I am not sure, cause Im not familiar with gentoo, but this happened to me in ubuntu also. what it fixed, was to manually move/copy fonts under the directory described in README: /usr/share/fonts/truetype
Reason: I think, that if you use "fonts://" command, it will display to you only folder .fonts which is sitting in your home directory. But conky needs priviledges from users group STAFF. Well, I dont know it for sure, merely guessing, but it really helped me to do it like I said... - Jun 11 2008
